MF-CGAN: Multi-Feature Conditional GAN for Synthetic Data Generation in Internet of Medical Things

Synthetic data generation via Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is essential for enhancing cybersecurity and safeguarding privacy in the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) and healthcare. We introduce Multi-Feature Conditional GAN (MF-CGAN), a Conditional Generative Adversarial Network with multi-feature integration, that generates realistic synthetic data using the WUSTL EHMS 2020 dataset of network traffic and health metrics. MF-CGAN’s architecture integrates conditional variables such as cyberattack types, traffic direction, and status flags, preserving their intricate interdependencies. The generator employs dense layers with batch normalization and Leaky ReLU activations to produce conditional synthetic data;the discriminator evaluates authenticity using the same conditional inputs. Experimental results show that MF-CGAN produces high-fidelity synthetic data, closely mirroring real data characteristics. In addition, we quantitatively demonstrate (MAE=0.012, RMSE=0.035, and classification accuracy up to 99%) that MF-CGAN-generated data effectively supports cybersecurity tasks, indicating its potential to significantly enhance data availability for IoMT. © 2014 IEEE.

Enhancing aviation safety: Machine learning for real-time ADS-B injection detection through advanced data analysis

Airplanes play a critical role in global transportation, ensuring the efficient movement of people and goods. Although generally safe, aviation systems occasionally encounter incidents and accidents that underscore the need for proactive risk management. This study employs machine learning to detect abnormalities in commercial aircraft operations using Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) data. Given the growing reliance on ADS-B technology, concerns regarding its susceptibility to security breaches, such as injection attacks, have intensified. To address these vulnerabilities, we propose a robust ADS-B injection detection system. Employing GridSearchCV for model optimization, it effectively identifies and categorizes injection risks. The system's performance, evaluated using the ADS-B Message Injection Attacks Dataset, achieves outstanding results, including a value of 0.9970 for the accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. The proposed classifier also demonstrates a higher area under the curve (0.9999), specificity (0.9956), and Cohen's kappa (0.9954) than existing approaches, while achieving a lower log loss (0.0107). This research significantly enhances aviation security by introducing a highly accurate, computationally efficient, and reliable real-time detection model for ADS-B injection attacks, ensuring the integrity and resilience of modern flight control systems. © 2025 The Authors

Decomposition-based hybrid methods employing statistical, machine learning, and deep learning models for crude oil price forecasting

Crude oil prices (COP) profoundly influence global economic stability, with fluctuations reverberating across various sectors. Accurate forecasting of COP is indispensable for governments, policymakers, and stakeholders to make well-informed decisions and effectively mitigate risks. The decomposition-based hybrid models have been showing promising COP forecasting accuracy than other time series forecasting methods. Despite this fact, no systematic study has been conducted to evaluate the true potential of different decomposition-based hybrid methods employing different forecasting models to forecast the COP. Therefore, a hybrid modeling framework is developed by combining efficient decomposition techniques, namely empirical mode decomposition (EMD), ensemble EMD (EEMD), complete EEMD with adaptive noise (CEEMDAN), and variational mode decomposition (VMD) with seven statistical models, fourteen machine learning (ML) models, and six deep learning (DL) models. Further, a systematic study is conducted on the resulting decomposition-based hybrid models to find the best hybrid model for COP forecasting. Three distinct train-test data splits are employed to ensure a reliable evaluation of the models using four performance metrics. Extensive statistical analysis is conducted to identify the optimal combination of the decomposition technique and forecasting model for precise COP prediction. The results demonstrate that the proposed decomposition-based hybrid model employing VMD and Huber Regression is statistically the best method among all alternatives to forecast monthly COP. The proposed hybrid method VMD-Huber Regression improves the root mean square error (RMSE) by 21% than CEEMDAN-ARIMA, 58.31% than EEMD-Theta, 13.18% than EMD-Random Walk, and 49.44% than VMD-TBATS hybrid methods in 60–40 Train-Test split ratio. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

A survey on cross-user federated recommendation

Recommender systems are effective in mitigating information overload, yet the centralized storage of user data raises significant privacy concerns. Cross-user federated recommendation(CUFR) provides a promising distributed paradigm to address these concerns by enabling privacy-preserving recommendations directly on user devices. In this survey, we review and categorize current progress in CUFR, focusing on four key aspects: privacy, security, accuracy, and efficiency. Firstly,we conduct an in-depth privacy analysis, discuss various cases of privacy leakage, and then review recent methods for privacy protection. Secondly, we analyze security concerns and review recent methods for untargeted and targeted *** untargeted attack methods, we categorize them into data poisoning attack methods and parameter poisoning attack methods. For targeted attack methods, we categorize them into user-based methods and item-based methods. Thirdly,we provide an overview of the federated variants of some representative methods, and then review the recent methods for improving accuracy from two categories: data heterogeneity and high-order information. Fourthly, we review recent methods for improving training efficiency from two categories: client sampling and model compression. Finally, we conclude this survey and explore some potential future research topics in CUFR.

Multimodal Turn in Place: A Comparative Analysis of Visual and Auditory Reset UIs in Redirected Walking

Resetting in redirected walking (RDW) allows users to maintain a continuous, collision-free walking experience in virtual reality (VR), even in a limited physical space. Since frequent resets reduce the user's sense of immersion, extensive research has been conducted to develop resetters that provide optimal reset directions. Various visual reset user interfaces (UIs) have been proposed to help users perform the correct reset direction according to the improved resetter, but their effectiveness has not been sufficiently verified. In addition, expert interviews conducted to identify the problems in the current reset process revealed that users sometimes fail to recognize the visual reset UI in time. Therefore, we propose a novel visual reset UI using Gauge, which is expected to provide users with an effective and high-quality experience. In Study 1, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the Gauge UI by comparing it to existing UIs (Direction, End Point, and Arrow Alignment). Users of various locomotion techniques, including RDW, inevitably need to perform resets, and in this work we propose a novel paradigm: a combined multimodal reset interface. © 1995-2012 IEEE.

Exploration of alzheimer disease using design of experiments

This study examines the use of experimental designs, specifically full and fractional factorial designs, for predicting Alzheimer’s disease with fewer variables. The full factorial design systematically investigates the effects of selected factors, providing a comprehensive analysis of their individual and interactive impacts on Alzheimer’s prediction. On the other hand, the fractional factorial design simplifies the model by selecting key factors and removing non-significant ones. For Alzheimer’s, among all the factors examined, the MMSE (Mini-mental state Examination) score emerged as the most significant, which was further cross-validated using Minitab Software Analysis. Importantly, the findings suggest that the fractional factorial design is a better alternative, particularly when time and cost constraints are present. The results highlight the effectiveness and efficiency of these experimental designs, demonstrating their potential for early detection, prevention, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. By contributing to the expanding knowledge base on experimental designs in medical research, this study emphasizes their crucial role in understanding and combating complex diseases like Alzheimer’s. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Informative task classification with concatenated embeddings using deep learning on crisisMMD

Disastrous situations pose a formidable challenge, testing our resilience against nature's fury and the race against time to prevent the loss of human life. It is noted that in such situations that Microblogging platforms like Twitter(now X) have proven to be an invaluable resource for citizens to share the real-time updates in their locality. Building upon this premise, we are proposing a new hybrid robust approach that integrates transfer learning with selective features from Liwc and manually engineered features to achieve state-of-the-art results on the CrisisMMD dataset on the informative task. In our innovative approach, we harnessed the power of Deep learning combined with traditional ML practices to improve the model, we utilized OpenAI embeddings and minute details from the tweets like the sentiment, text polarity, Retweet address, links included etc. We employed a dense-dropout-based concatenate model for further processing. We established baselines of each technique individually as well as commonly used techniques like Tf-Idf, BoW, Glove embeddings. Notably, our proposed model exhibits a significant accuracy improvement, achieving an accuracy of 87.93%, surpassing the highest accuracy of traditional methods of 82.93% obtained with Tf-Idf and ensemble voting. Through this work, we conclude that there is a scope of improvement in disaster-related NLP work with the introduction of transformer-based architecture and Pretrained GPT which include a massive corpus of text improving the semantic coherency which in turn lead to higher evaluation metrics. This work in future can be extended to incorporate different embeddings as well as using techniques like Multi-headed attention as well as RNNs like GST, GRU, etc. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Relay Type Link Fabrication Attack in SDN: A Review

Software-defined Networking (SDN) is an innovative network architecture tailored to address the modern demands of network virtualization and cloud computing, which require features such as programmability, flexibility, agility, and openness to foster innovation. However, this architecture also brings forth new security challenges, particularly due to the separation of the data plane from the control plane. Our investigation centers on a specific vulnerability termed link fabrication, which can lead to topology poisoning. A compromised network topology can cause substantial disruptions across the entire network infrastructure. Through a systematic survey, we identified that significant research efforts have been directed towards mitigating link fabrication attacks. We classified the existing studies into six categories of vulnerabilities: Host-based, port amnesia, invisible assailant attack, topology freezing, switch-based link fabrication, and link latency. Furthermore, our survey highlights several open challenges in areas such as Programmable dataplane, dedicated attack trees and threat models, active defense and mitigation strategies, as well as controller awareness and machine learning. To address the vulnerabilities identified, we propose the implementation of a distance-bounding protocol concept at the control plane as a potential solution. © 2019 IEEE.

Monitoring COVID-19 environment: a real-time facial mask detection using YOLO models

Purpose: The rapid spread of COVID-19 has resulted in significant harm and impacted tens of millions of people globally. In order to prevent the transmission of the virus, individuals often wear masks as a protective measure for themselves and others. Coronavirus protection guidelines have been published by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to WHO standards, COVID-19 can be prevented by wearing a mask in public places and congested regions. In these places, it is very difficult to personally check to see if people are wearing face masks or not. Methods: The objective of this research work is to build a powerful, efficient, and real-time approach for detecting people not wearing masks. Three cutting-edge object identification models, namely YOLOv4, Tiny-YOLOv4, and YOLOv5, are employed in this study for the identification of masked faces. Result: The proposed YOLOv5 model is evaluated using real-time images captured using a smartphone or tablet. The test images include both single and multiple people with and without masks. The YOLOv5 model achieved recognition accuracy of 88.90% with an average detection speed of 0.0316 s per image, whereas the YOLOv4 and Tiny-YOLOv4 produced recognition accuracy of 82.24% and 74.80% with an average detection speed of 0.0530 s and 0.0541 s per image, respectively. Conclusion: The comparative performance suggests that the YOLOv5 model has a maximum recognition accuracy of 88.90% in face mask identification tasks compared to other models such as the YOLOv4 and Tiny-YOLOv4. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of Biomedical Engineering 2025.
