Ant-inspired search techniques for solving the zero-one knapsack problem with multiple constraints

In this paper, we consider the multidimensional zero-one knapsack problem (0-1 MKP). The objective of the problem is to find a subset of objects that yields maximum profit without violating knapsack constraints. The 0-1 MKP is known to be NP-hard. Due to the intractability of the problem, numerous research efforts have focused on various approximation algorithms to acquire satisfactory suboptimal solutions within a reasonable amount of computation cost. However, most realistic approaches for solving the 0-1 MKP still remain to be improved. On the basis of ant colony optimization, we therefore propose a novel constructive algorithm. The proposed algorithm, namely AST-MKP, adopts a new type of constructive graph for leading artificial ants in making decisions to select effective solution components. Moreover, we also devise a local search scheme to advance the quality of solutions obtained. The performance of the AST-MKP algorithm is demonstrated by comparing it against other existing algorithms in terms of overall profit for a set of problem instances obtained form the OR-Library. Experimental results indicate that the algorithm proposed here performs significantly better than the competitive approaches.

The rapid growth in IEEE 802.11 based wireless LANs has led to new implementations like VoIP applications that require seamless handover. But handoff delays provide a serious barrier for such services to be made available to mobile platforms. Throughout the last few years there has been plenty of research aimed towards reducing the handoff delay incurred in the various levels of wireless communication. Here we propose new scanning method in which we determine the distance of nearest access points from the mobile node to bypass the main processes involved in increasing MAC layer handoff latency.

Synthesis of musical instruments or human voice is a time consuming process which requires theoretical and experimental knowledge about the synthesis engine. Commonly, performers need to deal with synthesizer interfaces and a process of trial and error for creating musical sounds similar to a target sound. This drawback can be overcome by adjusting automatically the synthesizer parameters using optimization algorithms. In this paper a hybrid particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed to solve the frequency modulation (FM) matching synthesis problem. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of a shuffle process for exchanging information between particles and applies the selective passive congregation and the opposition-based learning approaches to preserve swarm diversity. Both approaches for injecting diversity are based on simple operators, preserving the easy implementation philosophy of the particle swarm optimization. The proposed hybrid particle swarm optimization algorithm was validated for a three-nested FM synthesizer, which represents a 6-dimensional multimodal optimization problem with strong epistasis. Simulation results revealed that the proposed algorithm presented promising results in terms of quality of solutions. © 2011 IEEE.

Protein-RNA interactions play important roles in cellular processes like protein synthesis, RNA processing, and gene expression regulation. Reliable identification of the interfaces involved in RNA-protein interactions is essential for comprehending the mechanisms and the functional implications of these interactions and provides a valuable guide for rational drug discovery and design. Because the determination of 3D structures of protein-RNA complexes has various technical limitations and is typically costly, reliable in silico interface prediction methods that require only the sequence information are urgently needed. We present HomPRIP, a homologous sequence based method for predicting protein-RNA interfaces, based on our conservation analysis of protein-RNA interfaces. We test Hom-PRIP on a benchmark dataset of 199 proteins and compare it with the state-of-the-art protein-RNA interface prediction methods. Our results show that HomPRIP can reliably identify protein-RNA interface residues in 71% of test proteins with at least one putative sequence homolog passing the similarity thresholds of HomPRIP. Moreover, to facilitate predictions for proteins with no identified homologs, we develop HomPRIP-NB, a method combining the HomPRIP predictor and a Naive Bayes (NB) classifier trained using evolutionary information derived from alignments against the NCBI nr database. Our results suggest that HomPRIP-NB significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art machine learning methods for predicting protein-RNA interface residues. Copyright © 2011 ACM.

Organic Thin Film Transistors (OTFTs) are promising devices for future development of variety of low-cost and large-area electronics applications such as flexible displays. This paper analyzes the performance of OTFT made of several organic semiconducting and insulating materials and further discusses their applications. Analysis of previous research work demonstrates that the mobility in OTFT decreases when the product of semiconducting film thickness and gate capacitance per unit area increases. The decrease is specified by a power law function with parameters for several organic semiconductors. OTFT characteristics have undergone spectacular improvements during the last few years. This paper explores the effect of variation of channel length from 40 nm to 20 nm on drain current for pentacene bottom contact structure. Variations in these quantities maps to variations in the electrical behaviour of devices. It has been found that drain current increases due to decrease in length of organic thin film conducting channel. It reviews recent progress in parameter properties for device designs and applications related to OTFTs. The performance of OTFTs is evaluated in terms of mobility, on/off current ratio, threshold voltage and sub threshold slope. This paper thoroughly discusses the overall performance and applications of OTFTs in various fields. © 2011 IEEE.

As mobile technologies evolved, the mobile networks provided users not only high mobility, but also high data rates and flexible services. Meanwhile, Internet services had been very successful from 1970s to date. However, the Internet and the mobile telecommunications evolved separately and were not compatible until 3GPP proposed the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). In this paper, we first introduce mobile Web 2.0 application creation in the next generation IMS network. Then we propose a proof-of-concept service called “JoinMe” on the IBM-NCTU IMS network to study how a social networking service can be created for mobile networks.

It has been a challenge to achieve high efficiency organic photovoltaics (OPV) that absorb long wavelength solar radiation without incurring unacceptable reductions in open circuit voltage (Voc) or charge separation efficiency. Based on the parent structure of the 2, 4-bis[4-(N, N-diisobutylamino)-2,6-dihydroxyphenyl] squaraine (SQ), we have increased V oc using a family of highly near-infrared absorbing SQs, achieving values as high as 0.94 V. These SQ donors are: 2, 4-bis[4-(N-Phenyl-1- naphthylamino)-2,6-dihydroxyphenyl] squaraine (1-NPSQ),2,4-bis[4-(N, N-diphenylamino)-2,6 dihydroxyphenyl] squaraine (DPSQ), 2,4-bis[4-(N, N-diphenylamino)-2,6-dihydroxyphenyl] asymmetric squaraine (DPASQ). The spin-cast SQ, 1-NPSQ, DPSQ and DPASQ donors are then coated with the acceptor C60 to form bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells that take advantage of their exceptionally high absorption coefficient and nanocrystalline morphology to overcome the short diffusion length characteristic of these materials. Combined with a high short-circuit current density (J sc=10.6 mA/cm2) and high fill factor (FF=0.64), the optimized 1-NPSQ/C60 photovoltaic cells with 1-NPSQ annealed at elevated temperature have a power conversion efficiency of ηp as high as 6.0% (correcting for solar mismatch) at 1 sun (AM 1.5G) simulated solar illumination, which to our knowledge is the highest efficiency reported to date for small molecule OPVs. © 2011 IEEE.

Node degree has been regarded as one of the important and convenient metrics to measure the connectivity of the wireless ad hoc networks. Many studies concerning node degree are based on the assumption of static connectivity graph on the number of nodes, which can not reflect the mobility characteristics in ad hoc networks. In this paper we investigate three fundamental characteristics of a wireless ad hoc network: its node degree distribution, its average node degree and its maximum node degree experienced by all the nodes during theirs movement. We employ a novel mathematical modeling to derive their analytical expressions in presence of radio channel fading. The results of this paper are useful in the study of connectivity and improving algorithm complexity of incentive protocols. Also, these results are of practical value for researchers in this area, e.g., if they set the parameters in a network-level simulation of a mobile ad hoc network or if they design a wireless sensor network.

Over the past few years, digitized music in forms like MP3 has made a great impact on the way of acquiring and listening to music. Due to the advanced communication tools, the consumers may search and purchase their favorite music online without going to physical music stores. Consider that a user occasionally gets an unknown and preferred music episode, but she/he has no idea on how to identify the query terms to retrieve the music using traditional textual-based search engines. Thereupon content-based music retrieval for music identification serves as an adequate solution for the users to search the targeted music effectively and conveniently. In this paper, we present several methods and similarity functions designed to achieve the effective content-based music identification. In particular, we compare the performances of various similarity functions with different musical features under real environments. The experimental results on real music datasets reveal that the Hamming Distance can bring out very robust performance for content-based music identification in terms of accuracy. In addition to music identification, this paper with detailed empirical analysis also provides the researchers with insightful ideas in other real applications such as audio monitoring, musical copyright, etc.
