Cloud federations allow cloud providers to mitigate the limitation of local resources, enabling service provision for more customers. They allow a provider to either share its unused resources with providers of other clouds or request resources from them when its own resources are not enough to respond to customer demand. Thus, access control is required to manage access to those shared resources. The service provider determines who can access cloud resources by delegating permissions for that purpose. Breakdown in accountability can occur in delegation of permissions among multiple clouds because of ambiguity regarding the interpretation of permission specifications. This paper discusses the breakdown in accountability for delegated permissions in cloud federations, and then demonstrates a trust model to achieve breakdown-robust accountability.

In the last 2 decades it has become increasingly evident that a large number of proteins are either fully or partially disordered. Intrinsically disordered proteins lack a stable 3D structure, are ubiquitous and fulfill essential biological functions. Their conformational heterogeneity is encoded in their amino acid sequences, thereby allowing intrinsically disordered proteins or regions to be recognized based on properties of these sequences. The identification of disordered regions facilitates the functional annotation of proteins and is instrumental for delineating boundaries of protein domains amenable to structural determination with X-ray crystallization. This article discusses a comprehensive selection of databases and methods currently employed to disseminate experimental and putative annotations of disorder, predict disorder and identify regions involved in induced folding. It also provides a set of detailed instructions that should be followed to perform computational analysis of disorder.

A distributional semantics approach for selective reasoning on commonsense graph knowledge bases

Tasks such as question answering and semantic search are dependent on the ability of querying & reasoning over large-scale commonsense knowledge bases (KBs). However, dealing with commonsense data demands coping with problems such as the increase in schema complexity, semantic inconsistency, incompleteness and scalability. This paper proposes a selective graph navigation mechanism based on a distributional relational semantic model which can be applied to querying & reasoning over heterogeneous knowledge bases (KBs). The approach can be used for approximative reasoning, querying and associational knowledge discovery. In this paper we focus on commonsense reasoning as the main motivational scenario for the approach. The approach focuses on addressing the following problems: (i) providing a semantic selection mechanism for facts which are relevant and meaningful in a specific reasoning & querying context and (ii) allowing coping with information incompleteness in large KBs. The approach is evaluated using ConceptNet as a commonsense KB, and achieved high selectivity, high scalability and high accuracy in the selection of meaningful navigational paths. Distributional semantics is also used as a principled mechanism to cope with information incompleteness. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Several studies deal with mechanisms for processing transactional queries over encrypted data. However, little attention has been devoted to determine how a data warehouse (DW) hosted in a cloud should be encrypted to enable analytical queries processing. In this article, we present a novel method for encrypting a DW and show performance results of this DW implementation. Moreover, an OLAP system based on the proposed encryption method was developed and performance tests were conducted to validate our system in terms of query processing performance. Results showed that the overhead caused by the proposed encryption method decreased when the proposed system was scaled out and compared to a non-encrypted dataset (46.62% with one node and 9.47% with 16 nodes). Also, the computation of aggregates and data groupings over encrypted data in the server produced performance gains (from 84.67% to 93.95%) when compared to their executions in the client, after decryption. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Date and time descriptors play an important role in cultural record keeping. As part of digital access and information retrieval on heritage databases it is becoming increasingly important that date descriptors are not matched as strings but that their semantics are properly understood and interpreted by man and machine alike. This paper describes a prototype system designed to resolve temporal expressions from English language cultural heritage records to ISO 8601 compatible date expressions. The architecture we advocate calls for a two stage resolution with a "semantic layer" between the input and ISO 8601 output. The system is inspired by a similar system for German language records and was tested on real world data from the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin. Results from an evaluation with two senior art and metadata experts from the gallery are reported. © This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence.

Recommending products to users means estimating their preferences for certain items over others. This can be cast either as a problem of estimating the rating that each user will give to each item, or as a problem of estimating users' relative preferences in the form of a ranking. Although collaborative-filtering approaches can be used to identify users who rate and rank products similarly, another source of data that informs us about users' preferences is their set of social connections. Both rating- and ranking-based paradigms are important in real-world recommendation settings, though rankings are especially important in settings where explicit feedback in the form of a numerical rating may not be available. Although many existing works have studied how social connections can be used to build better models for rating prediction, few have used social connections as a means to derive more accurate ranking-based models. Using social connections to better estimate users' rankings of products is the task we consider in this paper. We develop a model, SBPR (Social Bayesian Personalized Ranking), based on the simple observation that users tend to assign higher ranks to items that their friends prefer. We perform experiments on four real-world recommendation data sets, and show that SBPR outperforms alternatives in ranking prediction both in warm- and cold-start settings. Copyright 2014 ACM.

People across the world habitually turn to online social media to share their experiences, thoughts, ideas, and opinions as they go about their daily lives. These posts collectively contain a wealth of insights into how masses perceive their surroundings. Therefore, extracting people's perceptions from social media posts can provide valuable information about pertinent issues such as public transportation, emergency conditions, and even reactions to political actions or other activities. This paper proposes a novel approach to extract such perceptions from a corpus of social media posts originating from a given broad geographical region. The approach divides the broad region into a number of sub-regions, and trains language models over social media conversations within these sub-regions. Using Bayesian and geo-smoothing methods, the ensemble of language models can be queried with phrases embodying a perception. Discrete and continuous visualization methods represent the extent to which social media posts within the sub-regions express the query. The capabilities of the perception mining approach are illustrated using transportation-themed scenarios.

Vector space models (VSMs) are mathematically well-defined frameworks that have been widely used in text processing. In these models, high-dimensional, often sparse vectors represent text units. In an application, the similarity of vectors -- and hence the text units that they represent -- is computed by a distance formula. The high dimensionality of vectors, however, is a barrier to the performance of methods that employ VSMs. Consequently, a dimensionality reduction technique is employed to alleviate this problem. This paper introduces a new method, called Random Manhattan Indexing (RMI), for the construction of L1 normed VSMs at reduced dimensionality. RMI combines the construction of a VSM and dimension reduction into an incremental, and thus scalable, procedure. In order to attain its goal, RMI employs the sparse Cauchy random projections.

Traditionally, the assessment and learning science commu-nities rely on different paradigms to model student performance. The assessment community uses Item Response Theory which allows modeling different student abilities and problem difficulties, while the learning science community uses Knowledge Tracing, which captures skill acquisition. These two paradigms are complementary - IRT cannot be used to model student learning, while Knowledge Tracing assumes all students and problems are the same. Recently, two highly related models based on a principled synthesis of IRT and Knowledge Tracing were introduced. However, these two models were evaluated on different data sets, using different evaluation metrics and with different ways of splitting the data into training and testing sets. In this paper we reconcile the models' results by presenting a unified view of the two models, and by evaluating the models under a common evaluation metric. We find that both models are equivalent and only differ in their training procedure. Our results show that the combined IRT and Knowledge Tracing models offer the best of assessment and learning sciences - high prediction accuracy like the IRT model, and the ability to model student learning like Knowledge Tracing.
