Secure ticket-based authentication method for IoT applications

The recent surge in the number of machines,appliances,and services connected to the Internet demands secure processing and transmission of sensory *** plays a crucial role in a typical security model used in the Internet of Things(IoT),and it protects data communications from various attacks,such as impersonation and denial of service,by verifying and allowing legitimate users to access the IoT ***,recent authentication literature has not addressed the need for developing a scalable and efficient authentication method in this *** paper proposes a secure and anonymous ticket-based authentication method for the *** proposed method protects the network from various security and privacy threats such as data alternation and denial of service while also offering mutual authentication and sensor *** security and performance evaluations confirm the improvement.

Data driven analysis of particulate systems for development of reliable model to determine drag coefficient of non-spherical particles

Non-spherical particles are extensively encountered in the process industry such as feedstock or catalysts e.g.,energy,food,pharmaceuticals,and *** design of equipment used to process these particles is highly dependent upon the accurate and reliable modeling of hydrodynamics of particulate media *** coefficient of these particles is the most significant of all parameters.A universal model to predict the drag coefficient of such particles has not yet been developed due to the diversity and complexity of particle shapes and *** this into consideration,we propose a unique approach to model the drag coefficient of non-spherical particles using machine learning(ML)to move towards generalization.A comprehensive database of approximately five thousand data points from reliable experiments and high-resolution simulations was compiled,covering a wide range of *** drag coefficient was modeled as a function of Reynolds number,sphericity,Corey Shape Factor,aspect ratio,volume fraction,and angle of *** ML techniques—Artificial Neural Networks,Random Forest,and AdaBoost—were used to train the *** models demonstrated strong generalization when tested on unseen ***,AdaBoost outperformed the others with the lowest MAPE(20.1%)and MRD(0.069).Additional analysis on excluded data confirmed the robust predictive abilities and generalization of the proposed *** models were also evaluated across three flow regimes—Stokes,transitional,and turbulent—to further assess their generalization.A comparative analysis with well-known empirical correlations,such as Haider and Levenspiel and Chien,showed that all ML models outperformed traditional approaches,with AdaBoost achieving the best *** current work demonstrates that new generated ML techniques can be reliably used to predict drag coefficient of non-spherical particles paving way towards generalization of ML approach.

Demand Management for Peak-to-Average Ratio Minimization via Intraday Block Pricing

Price based demand response schemes may significantly improve power system efficiency. Additionally, it is desired that such schemes yield improved power operation, by reducing the peak consumption. This paper proposes the Intraday Block Pricing (IBP) scheme, aiming to promote effective demand response among consumers by charging their electricity usage based on intraday time-slots. To design the prices associated with the proposed scheme, we formulate a bilevel optimization problem that aims to minimize the Peak-to-Average Ratio (PAR) and simultaneously benefit the consumers and the utility company. The bilevel problem is converted into a single-level Mathematical Program with Equilibrium Constraints (MPEC). The resulting MPEC is non-convex and includes nonlinear constraints. Hence, to obtain a solution, it is relaxed into a Mixed Integer Linear Program by dealing with all nonlinearities. To evaluate the conservativeness of the proposed approach, a lower bound to the cost of the original bilevel problem is obtained. The applicability of the proposed scheme is demonstrated with simulations on various case studies, which exhibit a significant reduction in PAR and economic gains for the utility company and consumers. Moreover, simulation results show that the solutions of the original and relaxed problems are equivalent, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed solution approach. Further simulation results demonstrate significant advantages in the performance of the IBP scheme when compared to existing schemes in the literature. © 2010-2012 IEEE.

The energy demand for Internet of Things (IoT) applications is increasing with a rise in IoT devices. Rising costs and energy demands can cause serious problems. Fog computing (FC) has recently emerged as a model for location-aware tasks, data processing, fast computing, and energy consumption reduction. The Fog computing model assists cloud computing in fast processing at the network's edge, which also exerts a vital role in cloud computing. Due to the fast computing in fog servers, different quality of service (QoS) approaches have been proposed in various sections of the fog system, and several quality factors have been considered in this regard. Despite the significance of QoS in Fog computing, no extensive study has focused on QoS and energy consumption methods in this area. Therefore, this article investigates previous research on the use and guarantee of Fog computing. This article reviews six general approaches that discuss the published articles between 2015 and late May 2023. The focal point of this paper is evaluating Fog computing and the energy consumption strategy. This article further shows the advantages, disadvantages, tools, types of evaluation, and quality factors according to the selected approaches. Based on the reviewed studies, some open issues and challenges in Fog computing energy consumption management are suggested for further study. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Improved Belief Propagation Decoder for LDPC-CRC-Polar Codes with Bit-Freezing

Though belief propagation bit-flip(BPBF)decoding improves the error correction performance of polar codes,it uses the exhaustive flips method to achieve the error correction performance of CA-SCL decoding,thus resulting in high decoding complexity and *** alleviate this issue,we incorporate the LDPC-CRC-Polar coding scheme with BPBF and propose an improved belief propagation decoder for LDPC-CRC-Polar codes with bit-freezing(LDPCCRC-Polar codes BPBFz).The proposed LDPCCRC-Polar codes BPBFz employs the LDPC code to ensure the reliability of the flipping set,i.e.,critical set(CS),and dynamically update *** modified CS is further utilized for the identification of error-prone *** proposed LDPC-CRC-Polar codes BPBFz obtains remarkable error correction performance and is comparable to that of the CA-SCL(L=16)decoder under medium-to-high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)*** gains up to 1.2dB and 0.9dB at a fixed BLER=10-4compared with BP and BPBF(CS-1),*** addition,the proposed LDPC-CRC-Polar codes BPBFz has lower decoding latency compared with CA-SCL and BPBF,i.e.,it is 15 times faster than CA-SCL(L=16)at high SNR regions.

Crowd management and analysis(CMA)systems have gained a lot of interest in the vulgarization of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)*** tracking using UAVs is among the most important services provided by a *** this paper,we studied the periodic crowd-tracking(PCT)*** consists in usingUAVs to follow-up crowds,during the life-cycle of an open crowded area(OCA).Two criteria were considered for this *** first is related to the CMA initial investment,while the second is to guarantee the quality of service(QoS).The existing works focus on very specified assumptions that are highly committed to CMAs applications *** study outlined a new binary linear programming(BLP)model to optimally solve the PCT motivated by a real-world application study taking into consideration the high level of *** closely approach different real-world contexts,we carefully defined and investigated a set of parameters related to the OCA characteristics,behaviors,and theCMAinitial infrastructure investment(e.g.,UAVs,charging stations(CSs)).In order to periodically update theUAVs/crowds andUAVs/CSs assignments,the proposed BLP was integrated into a linear algorithm called PCTs *** main objective was to study the PCT problem fromboth theoretical and numerical *** prove the PCTs solver effectiveness,we generated a diversified set of PCTs instances with different scenarios for simulation *** empirical results analysis enabled us to validate the BLPmodel and the PCTs solver,and to point out a set of new challenges for future research directions.

Solving dynamic optimization problems using parent–child multi-swarm clustered memory (PCSCM) algorithm

The Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm faces several inherent challenges when applied to dynamic and large-scale optimization problems. These challenges encompass the issues of outdated particle memory, inadequate scalability in high-dimensional search spaces, the incapability to detect environmental changes, a continual trade-off between exploration and exploitation, and the potential loss of population diversity within the problem space. To address these challenges, we propose a novel hybrid PSO algorithm, denoted as Parent–Child Multi-Swarm Clustered Memory (PCSCM). PCSCM is explicitly designed to leverage an enhanced memory system, capable of mitigating the issue of outdated particle memory after convergence, and efficiently adapting to changing environmental conditions. This innovative memory system retains and retrieves promising solutions from the past when environmental alterations occur. Additionally, PCSCM introduces clustering mechanisms for particles within each swarm, aimed at augmenting diversity within the problem space. This clustering strategy substantially bolsters the algorithm’s performance in tracking evolving optimal solutions and positively contributes to its scalability. Crucially, the clustering approach is implemented not only for the main population but also for stored solutions in memory, which collectively strike a balance between exploration and exploitation. In the proposed method, particle swarms are divided into parent and child swarms, with parent swarms dedicated to preserving diversity;while, child swarms focus on identifying local solutions. These clustering and memory strategies are consistently applied within each sub-swarm to effectively address the challenges posed by high-dimensional search spaces. An Energy-Aware Resource Management Strategy Based on Spark and YARN in Heterogeneous Environments

Apache Spark is a popular framework for processing big data. Running Spark on Hadoop YARN allows it to schedule Spark workloads alongside other data-processing frameworks on Hadoop. When an application is deployed in a YARN cluster, its resources are given without considering energy efficiency. Furthermore, there is no way to enforce any user-specified deadline constraints. To address these issues, we propose a new deadline-aware resource management system and a scheduling algorithm to minimize the total energy consumption in Spark on YARN for heterogeneous clusters. First, a deadline-aware energy-efficient model for the considered problem is proposed. Then, using a locality-aware method, executors are assigned to applications. This algorithm sorts the nodes based on the performance per watt (PPW) metric, the number of application data blocks on nodes, and the rack locality. It also offers three ways to choose executors from different machines: greedy, random, and Pareto-based. Finally, the proposed heuristic task scheduler schedules tasks on executors to minimize total energy and tardiness. We evaluated the performance of the suggested algorithm regarding energy efficiency and satisfying the Service Level Agreement (SLA). The results showed that the method outperforms the popular algorithms regarding energy consumption and meeting deadlines. © 2017 IEEE.
