There has been recent interest in the use of the method of manufactured solutions as a technique for verification that computational codes solve the specified partial differential equations. Such verification techniques provide a mechanism to verify that a particular code is solves the specified equations to a specific order of accuracy. The technique requires solving for the manufactured solution on a sequence of progressively finer grids and measuring the exact error (difference from the exact solution) to establish that this error decreases consistently with the expected order of accuracy. There are some shortcomings of the approach in that it can become expensive to show that an asymptotic result has been found, particularly for 3D problems where each level of refinement is 8 times larger. In addition, it is difficult, and in some cases impossible, to apply the technique to generalized grids where self-similar refinements may not be available. We present an alternative method to achieve this goal that samples the solution space at different random locations using different scalings of the same grid (shrinking grids). A statistical sample is used to estimate the error at that level. This approach has advantages in terms of both cost savings and the evaluation of generalized solvers and meshes that are not possible with grid refinement methodologies. This paper present a silicon microchips designed for rapid, simultaneous testing of samples for DNA amplification by polymerase chain reaction - PCR. Over the last years a lot of researches have been focused in the field of miniaturized reaction and separation systems, including the construction of fully integrated 'lab-on-chip' systems. Microreactors, which initially targeted DNA based reactions such as the polymerase chain reaction, are now used in several other chemical and biochemical assays. We have analysed the temperature uniformity and distribution on the PCR - chip, the temperature distribution of DNA sample, and the transient temperature difference between the heater and DNA sample. ©2004 IEEE.

We propose a new algorithm for constructing finite-element meshes suitable for spacetime discontinuous Galerkin solutions of linear hyperbolic PDEs. Given a triangular mesh of some planar domain Ω and a target time value T, our method constructs a tetrahedral mesh of the spacetime domain Ω × [0, T] in constant running time per tetrahedron in 3 using an advancing front method. Elements are added to the evolving mesh in small patches by moving a vertex of the front forward in time. Spacetime discontinuous Galerkin methods allow the numerical solution within each patch to be computed as soon as the patch is created. Our algorithm employs new mechanisms for adaptively coarsening and refining the front in response to a posteriori error estimates returned by the numerical code. A change in the front induces a corresponding refinement or coarsening of future elements in the spacetime mesh. Our algorithm adapts the duration of each element to the local quality, feature size, and degree of refinement of the underlying space mesh. We directly exploit the ability of discontinuous Galerkin methods to accommodate discontinuities in the solution fields across element boundaries.

We present an interactive gesture recognition-based, immersive augmented reality system visualizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) datasets of indoor environments. CFD simulation is used to predict the indoor environments and assess their response to specific internal and external conditions. To enable efficient visualization of CFD datasets in actual-space, an augmented reality system was integrated with a CFD simulation engine. To facilitate efficient data manipulation of the simulated post-processed CFD data and to increase the user-control of the immersive environment, a new intuitive method of human-computer interaction (HCI) has been incorporated. A gesture recognition system was integrated with the augmented reality-CFD structure to transform hand-postural data into a general description of hand-shape, through forward kinematics and computation of hand segment positions and their joint angles. This enabled real-time interactions between users and simulated CFD results in actual-space.

The development of an educational interface for hands-on student experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for undergraduate and engineering courses and laboratories is discussed. The design of the educational interface teaches students CFD methodology and procedures through interactive implementation that automates the CFD process following a step-by-step approach. Generalizations of CFD for pipe, nozzle and airfoil flows facilitate their use at different universities with different applications, conditions and exercise notes. Evaluation indicates areas of strength and strategies for improvements and more effective implementation.

This paper describes the results of the working group investigating the issues of empirical studies for evolving systems. The groups found that there were many issues that were central to successful evolution and this concluded that this is a very important area within software engineering. Finally nine main areas were selected for consideration. For each of these areas the central issues were identified as well as success factors. In some cases success stories were also described and the critical factors accounting for the success analyzed. In some cases it was later found that a number of areas were so tightly coupled that it was important to discuss them together.

Influence of human engineering on manning levels and human performance on ships

Mr. Anderson was instrumental in introducing the collective protection system (CPS) in the U.S. Navy developing the initial forward-fit package for the USS Gunston Hall and the engineering change proposal (ECP) for the USS Wasp. In 1990 he joined the Human Systems Integration (HSI) Division (SEA 55W5) where he was task leader for auxiliary ships. He is currently the HSI manager for the future technology variant of the SeaLift ship and the future carrier. Association of Scientists and Engineers 33rdAnnual Technical Symposium 26 April 1996. Fred R. Oberman:has B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Chicago and Loyola University (experimental psychology) and an M.S. degree in industrial engineering and operations research from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). The objectives of Human Engineering (HE) are generally viewed as increasing human performance, reducing human error, enhancing personnel and equipment safety, and reducing training and related personnel costs. There are other benefits that are thoroughly consistent with the direction of the Navy of the future, chief among these is reduction of required numbers of personnel to operate and maintain Navy ships. The Naval Research Advisory Committee (NRAC) report on Man-Machine Technology in the Navy estimated that one of the benefits from increased application of man-machine technology to Navy ship design is personnel reduction as well as improving system availability, effectiveness, and safety The objective of this paper is to discuss aspects of the human engineering design of ships and systems that affect manning requirements, and impact human-performance and safety The paper will also discuss how the application of human engineering leads to improved performance, and crew safety, and reduced workload, all of which influence manning levels. Finally, the paper presents a discussion of tools and case studies of good human engineering design practices which reduce manning.
