An empirical study of manual abstraction between class diagrams and code of open-source systems

Models play a crucial role in software design, analysis, and supporting new maintainers. However, over time, the benefits of models can diminish as system implementations evolve without corresponding updates to the original models. Reverse engineering methods and tools can help maintain alignment between models and implementation code. Yet, automatically reverse-engineered models often lack abstraction and contain extensive details that hinder comprehension. Recent advancements in AI-based content generation suggest that we may soon see reverse engineering tools capable of human-grade abstraction. To guide the design and validation of such tools, we need a principled understanding of manual abstraction—a topic that has received limited attention in existing literature. In pursuit of this goal, our paper presents a multiple-case study of model-to-code differences, examining nine substantial open-source software projects obtained through repository mining. We manually matched source code from projects comprising 4983 classes, 26k attributes, and 54k operations to 523 model elements (including classes, attributes, operations, and relationships). These mappings precisely capture discrepancies between provided class diagram designs and actual implementation code. By analyzing these differences in detail, we derive a taxonomy of difference types and provide a well-organized list of cases corresponding to identified differences. Our findings have the potential to contribute to improved reverse engineering methods and tools, propose new mapping rules for model-to-code consistency checks, and offer guidelines to avoid over-abstraction and over-specification during the design process. © The Author(s) 2025.

This study presents the development of a mobile application for classifying skin conditions into Melanoma, Acne, and Healthy skin. A dataset of 214 Melanoma images from Dermnet, 395 Acne images, 400 Healthy skin images, and 101 Melanoma images from the RAW10000 database was used. Pre-processing techniques such as rescaling, sharpening, bilateral deceleration, and min-max normalization were applied. Feature extraction was performed using HOG, VGG16, and MobileNetV2, followed by classification with SVM, RF, and ANN models. MobileNetV2 achieved the highest accuracy at 94.30%. The backend was developed with Django and MySQL, and the user interface with Figma and React. The project demonstrates significant accuracy and practical application potential, enhancing mobile device access to dermatological diagnostics and early diagnosis. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

SQUMUTH squirrel search based algorithm for high order mutant generation in mutation testing

In today's software testing community, quality assessment remains critical, with mutation testing standing as a cornerstone technique for evaluating the effectiveness of test cases. This method involves introducing faulty code, or mutants, into the program to assess the quality of the test suite and other testing methods. However, mutation testing faces challenges such as the generation of numerous mutants, the presence of equivalent mutants that are difficult to detect through testing, and the lack of realistic mutant creation. Literature reviews indicate significant efforts to address these issues through formal solutions and heuristic methods. Recent optimization-based methods are now recognized as cost-effective result in an optimized solution. Hence, to overcome these limitations, this study introduces SQUMUTH, a novel approach for high-order mutant generation based on the Squirrel Search Algorithm (SSA). Inspired by the foraging behavior of squirrels, SSA offers a promising solution for enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of mutation testing. Experimental evaluations on eight well-known Java benchmark programs demonstrate that SQUMUTH outperforms existing methods. Comparative analyses of mutation scores and the rates of realistic mutants consistently show its better performance across all subject programs compared to other state-of-the-art methods such as Social Group Optimization, Binary Genetic Algorithm, and random testing. The experimental results underscore its effectiveness in generating more realistic mutants. The experimental results indicated that the proposed approach has the potential to advance software testing by improving the cost-effectiveness of mutation analysis and the quality of software systems. © The Author(s) 2025.

Air quality forecasting is critical for environmental monitoring and public health, and in this study, we propose a hybrid approach utilizing Gooseneck Barnacle Optimization (GBO) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to enhance predictive accuracy. The air quality dataset, comprising pollutant concentrations (CO, NOx, benzene) and meteorological factors (temperature, humidity), is sourced from the UCI Machine Learning Repository. GBO is employed to fine-tune the ANN's hyperparameters (especially the weight and bias), as well as the number of layers, neurons, and activation functions, to improve regression-based forecasting. The GBOANN model achieves a Mean Squared Error (MSE) of 0.562 and a Root Mean Squared Percentage Error (RMSPE) of 5.63%, outperforming other metaheuristic methods like BMO, SSA, DA, MVO, and EMA. This study demonstrates the GBO-ANN model's potential for accurate real-time air quality forecasting, offering a robust, sustainable solution. © 2025 IEEE.

Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) emerged as an innovative and patient-centric approach for non-invasive and painless examination of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It serves as a pivotal tool in helping medical practitioners in the early detection of anomalies within the intricate domain of the human GI tract. The automated identification of aberrations assumes paramount significance, contributing not only to temporal efficiency but also to timely diagnosis. Within the realm of academic literature, a plethora of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies have been proposed to effectuate the automatic classification, segmentation, and synthesis of anomalies inherent in WCE images. This scholarly endeavor undertakes a comprehensive and meticulous survey, elucidating the spectrum of anomaly classification, summarization, and detection techniques harnessed for computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) in the context of WCE images. The survey begins by delineating the methodologies underpinning WCE image classification and video processing. Subsequently, an exhaustive evaluation of techniques for analyzing WCE images is furnished, accompanied by an in-depth exploration of pertinent surveys, in addition to a judicious assessment of their merits and demerits. Furthermore, this study undertakes a rigorous evaluation of prevailing datasets utilized to benchmark the efficacy of various WCE techniques. Message Control for Blockchain Rewriting

Blockchain rewriting is necessary for modifying illegal or messages included in blockchain transactions, while maintaining the consistency of subsequent blocks in the blockchain. However, arbitrary blockchain rewriting is not desirable as it defeats the purpose of blockchain rewriting. In this work, we propose a new security primitive named message-controlled chameleon hash (MCH) and apply it for message control in blockchain rewriting to ensure that no unspecified messages are generated from blockchain rewriting. The proposed MCH enables permitted parties to select candidate messages from designated message sets for blockchain rewriting at the message level. Our evaluation shows that the proposed MCH can be easily integrated into both permissioned and permissionless blockchains. © 2024 IEEE.

Deep domain adaptation by joint distribution neural matching

Domain adaptation aims to learn a prediction model that performs well in a target domain with unlabeled data by harnessing the distributionally different labeled data from a source domain. In this paper, we design a simple yet powerful neural network approach named joint distribution neural matching (JOINT) to address the challenge of joint distribution difference/mismatch in domain adaptation. Our JOINT approach matches the source joint distribution and the target one in the activation space of a neural network by minimizing an estimate of the Jensen–Shannon (JS) divergence between the two joint distributions. The estimated JS divergence is derived in an explicit form, which frees our approach from solving a minimax adversarial problem when matching the distributions. Experiments on four representative large-scale visual recognition datasets show that our JOINT approach outperforms the state-of-the-art under both unsupervised and semi-supervised domain adaptation settings. RF-Based Sensing and AI Decision Support for Stroke Patient Monitoring: A Digital Twin Approach

Stroke occurs when the blood flow to a certain region of the brain is disrupted. It is a leading cause of long-term disability and can result in cognitive impairments, speech difficulties, and motor dysfunction. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are critical to minimizing the damage and improving outcomes. This article presents a novel Radio Frequency (RF) sensing and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Digital Twin (DT) model for effective detection of stroke. Through backscattering RF signals, the proposed Ultra Wide Band (UWB) antenna provides stroke detection. The implementation of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) technologies for stroke classification provides the necessary decision support to healthcare professionals in DT stroke patient monitoring. The statistical and autonomous (AutoEncoders (AE) and Stacked AutoEncoders (SAE) with structure 32-16-32, 64-32-16-32-64, and 128-64-32-16-32-64-128) feature data is enlarged through Gaussian noise feature data augmentation. The Fine KNN algorithm provides the 93.4% and 92.3% classification accuracies of binary and multi-class classification respectively. Out of the 4 autonomous feature extraction methods, the Fine KNN algorithm with SAE structure 64-32-16-32-64 provided the highest accuracies of 88.2% and 74.8% for binary and multi-class classification. © 2013 IEEE.

The ever-evolving Internet of Things (IoT) has ushered in a new era of intelligent manufacturing across multiple industries. However, the security and privacy of real-time data transmitted over the public channel of the industrial IoT (IIoT) remain formidable challenges. Existing lightweight protocols often omit one or more critical security features, such as anonymity and untraceability, and are susceptible to threats like desynchronization attacks. Additionally, they struggle to achieve an optimal balance between robust security and performance efficiency. To bridge these gaps, we introduce a new lightweight key agreement security scheme that guarantees secure access to the IIoT-enabled flexible manufacturing system (FMS). The strength of our scheme lies in its utilization of the authenticated encryption with associative data (AEAD) primitive, AEGIS, along with hash functions and physical unclonable functions, which secure the IIoT ecosystem. Additionally, our scheme offers flexibility in the form of the addition of new machines, password updates, and revocation in cases of theft or loss. A comprehensive security analysis demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed scheme in thwarting various attacks. The formal analysis, based on the Real-Or-Random (RoR) model, ensures session key indistinguishability, while the informal analysis highlights its resilience against known attacks. The comparative assessment demonstrate that the proposed scheme consistently outperforms the benchmark schemes across multiple dimensions, including security and functionality features, computational and communication overheads, and runtime efficiency. Specifically, the proposed scheme achieves peak performance enhancements of 77.55%, 44.73%, and 69.6% in computational overhead, runtime overhead, and communication overhead, respectively, underscoring its substantial performance advantages. © 2025 IEEE.

Colorectal intraepithelial neoplasia is a precancerous lesion of colorectal cancer, which is mainly diagnosed using pathological images. According to the characteristics of lesions, precancerous lesions can be classified into four different grades, i.e., background, normal, low and high level. However, due to the continuity of lesion development, tissue in different stages has high similarity. Recently, visual transformers have achieved impressive results in different visual tasks, due to their capacity of capturing long-range dependencies. However, due to computational cost, transformer cannot well extract detailed feature, which is important for lesion grading. To accurately segment pathological tissues with high similarity, in this work, we embed the multi-head MLP mixer module in the transformer network to extract cell and edge information. Furthermore, we propose a hierarchical MLP decoder to facilitate multi-scale feature fusion. The proposed transformer, namely MLPFormer, achieves remarkable results against competitive baselines on the Histo-CRC Biopsy dataset. The experimental results demonstrate that MLPFormer significantly outperforms the competitive baselines, i.e., a 3% dice improvement is achieved over the SegFormer series. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.
