The timely detection and classification of biological agents in a hostile environment is critical for increasing protection in critical areas. This paper proposes a strategy for identifying biological agents via distributed sensors with an artificial immune system (AIS). The proposed system is composed of networked sensors and nodes, communicating via wireless or wired connections. Measurements are continually taken via dispersed redundant sensors strategically placed in threat areas. These sensors continually measure and categorize air or liquid samples, alerting surrounding nodes when possible biological agents are detected. Detection is based upon the biological immune system (BIS) model of antigens and antibodies, and alerts are generated when a measured sample is determined to be a valid biological agent (antigen). Biological agent signatures (antibodies) are continually distributed throughout the system to adapt to changes in the environment or to new antigens.

Sperm whales are known to dive to a depth of over two thousand meters and it is also known that they emit loud impulsive broadband sounds called "clicks" during their diving. But little is known about sperm whales' behavior because of a shortage of methods to observe them during their dives. Our attempt is to use autonomous the underwater vehicle (AUV) as an observation platform for sperm whales. The tasks of AUV are to recognize sperm whales individually and track them in real time by listening to sperm whale's clicks with 4-hydrophone array and detecting its direction. As the initial stage for these objectives, we set up an experiment for our observation system using a boat instead of AUV and a support boat. In the middle of August 2003, we carried out an experiment to test our observation system off Ogasawara Islands. Two boats each with a hydrophone array were deployed mainly in the west or southeast of Chichijima Island in ocean depth of about 1000 meters. During the experiments over five days we encountered at least fourteen sperm whales. The result of this experiment indicates our observation system is suitable for tracking of sperm whales in sub-real time. We also acquired sufficient sound data of sperm whale's vocalization for off-line verification. The analysis of the results is presently underway. This experiment can be considered as the preliminary step to apply this kind of technique to develop innovative observation for underwater ecosystem system using AUVs. © 2004 IEEE.

Using optimized ion implantation, we have fabricated high performance 2-pole and 3-pole CPW filters on Si substrates at /spl sim/30 GHz, with very narrow 1.0 (3.1%) GHz and 0.75 (2.5%) GHz pass-band as well as small insertion loss. Microstrip filters on Si show small 3.2 dB loss at 27 GHz, which has smaller size than CPW case without the large coplanar ground planes. In contrast, the nonimplanted filters failed due to the high substrate loss.

A test structure and method for two-dimensional analysis of fabrication process and reliability of MOSFET using a photoemission microscope are presented. Arrays of 20/spl times/10(=200) MOSFETs were successfully measured at a time and evaluated the fluctuation of their characteristics. The fluctuation of hot-carrier-induced photoemission intensity was larger as gate length becomes smaller. Although the intensity fluctuation of photoemission in the same MOSFET was within small range, the fluctuation all over the MOSFET array was relatively large and independent of the position in the array.

In order to support multimedia communication, it is necessary to develop routing algorithms that make decisions based on multiple Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. This is because new services such as video on demand and remote meeting systems have multiple QoS requirements. However, the problem of QoS routing is difficult because finding a feasible route with two independent path constraints is NP-complete problem. Also, QoS routing algorithms for broadband networks must be adaptive, flexible, and intelligent for efficient network management. In this paper, we propose a multi-purpose optimization method for QoS routing based on Genetic Algorithm (GA). The simulation results show that the proposed method has a good performance and therefore is a promising method for QoS routing.

Sperm whales are known to dive to a depth of over two thousand meters. They emit loud impulsive broadband sounds called "clicks" during their diving. To investigate the sperm whale behavior, we attempt to apply the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) as an observation platform for sperm whales. AUV recognizes sperm whales individually and tracks them by listening to their clicks. As an initial stage for these objectives, we set up an experiment to test our observation system using two boats without an AUV. The observation system consists of two sets of 4-hydrophone arrays. Each hydrophone array works as a short baseline (SBL) system. The SBL system detects sperm whale clicks and calculates the orientation to sperm whales. Two relative directions from the two SBL arrays separated over a long base line (LBL) tell us the position of whale by triangulation. In the middle of August 2003, we carried out an experiment of the test system off Chichijima Island in Ogasawara. We deployed two boats each with a hydrophone array. An acoustic link between the SBL arrays was established to obtain the LBL length. During the experiments over five days we encountered at least fourteen sperm whales and succeeded in tracking some sperm whales by our observation system. Later in September 2004, we will perform another experiment using an AUV that works as one of the SBL systems. We expect this AUV-based observation system will give us a better understanding of sperm whale diving behavior and eco-system

The main challenges for metal-gate/high-k CMOS are to find dual workfunction gates and robust high-k dielectrics. The low workfunction metal-gate for n-MOS is especially difficult since it reacts with oxygen rapidly and is hard to form a silicide or nitride. We have successfully developed 4.2 and 4.3 eV low workfunction NiSi:Hf and NiTiSi gates that were integrated onto SiO/sub 2//Si, novel high-k LaAlO/sub 3//Si and LaAlO/sub 3//GOI n-MOSFETs. The Hf or TiSi is for low workfunction control and the NiSi is for low resistivity.

We have studied the hydrostatic pressure dependence of Ge nanocrystals embedded in a SiO2 matrix on a Si substrate by Raman scattering at room temperature. During the first cycle of increasing pressure, we observed a step change in the Ge Raman mode from 310.4 to 313.8cm−1 at ∼23kbar. The linear pressure coefficients α obtained before and after the step change at ∼23kbar are 0.42 and 0.64cm−1kbar−1, respectively. Upon decreasing pressure, the Ge mode follows a single slope of pressure coefficient α=0.64cm−1kbar−1. A finite-element analysis was carried out to investigate the elastic-field distribution in the Ge/SiO2/Si nanocrystal system, where the discontinuity of the specific geometric configuration with different elastic constants causes local areas of stress concentration around the interface. The step change of the Raman shifts with pressure at ∼23kbar was attributed to complete delamination between the SiO2 film and the Si substrate.

Plate and shell structures are widelyused in industrial products and structures such as automotives, vessels and architectures for its good formability and lightweight property. This paper presents a numerical shape optimization method for the rigidity design of plate and shell structures. A solution to a compliance minimization problem subject to a volume constraint is proposed, and its reciprocal problem is also solved. The boundaries are assumed to be movable in the in -plane directions so as to keep the initial curvatures in the design domain. For simplicity, the structures to be optimized are discretized by plane elements based on the Mindlin-Reissner plate theory. The problems are formulated as non-parametric, or distributed shape optimization problems involving the design of free boundaries. The shape gradient functions are theoretically derived using the material derivative method and the Lagrange multiplier method. With the shape gradient function, the smooth domain variation that minimizes the objective functional is de termined by the traction method developed by the authors. The validity and practical utility of this numerical solution for the rigidity design of plate and shell structures are verified through simple examples and applications to automotive components.

This paper presents a secure agent server named J-SAS. J-SAS is a secure and distributed execution environment for mobile agents. The core of the J-SAS is an agent virtual machine fulfilling the same functions as a traditional host machine. J-SAS considers the agent as an autonomous entity with execution code, state, specification and certification parts. J-SAS provides mobility, state dependency, run time code altering, and communications facilities. J-SAS consists of two main parts: agent gateway (AgG) and agent server (AgS). AgG is responsible for receiving agent through HTTP, authentication and delivering it with a passport to AgS. On the other side, AgS gets the agent, checks its passport, translates its code to safe code, initializes its state and runs it in a secure environment. Using resource allocation algorithms, ACL and authentication, J-SAS shows a good defensive mood against unauthorized read/write, denial of service and masquerading attacks. © 2003 IEEE.
