Bi-conically tapered single-mode couplers are fabricated using a fiber fusion coupler workstation. Losses found during fabrication are analyzed for a range of elongation. It is found that longer elongations will lower the losses. Theoretically, the losses are due to the taper paths crossing delineating curves. These losses which occur during tapering process are not really adiabatic if part of the signal power is not guided at the end of tapering process. In other words, taper path will not be inside adiabatic region of cladding guidance. It will cross from core-guidance region into lossy region or non-adiabatic region of cladding guidance.

In any measuring system the categorization of the error generation factors leads to simplification of complex error problems and to higher suppression of the error. In this paper we categorize, quantify and analyze the errors that affect a binocular active vision head. Simulations have been made and experimental results on a high resolution pan-tilt-vergence mechanism are also proposed. As a conclusion it can be said that the system performs optimal when it is initialized so that the two cameras are perfectly aligned and perpendicular to the baseline. Small variations in the vergence angle or small horizontal deviations of the principal point alters the measurement dramatically. On the other hand, variations in pan and tilt and vertical deviations of the principal point, affect the measurement insignificantly. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

The problem of containing pancyclic interconnection networks is an important research topic. An n-dimensional Mobius cube, MQn, is a variant of hypercubes according to specific rules. In this paper, we prove that Mobius cubes are all pancyclic networks. Similarly, both an n-dimensional crossed cube, CQn, and an n-dimensional twisted cube, TQn, are also variants of hypercubes according to specific rules. Moreover although the pancyclic property of a crossed cube and a twisted cube had been proved, we propose an alternative proof of this property. © 2002 IEEE.

A graph is pancyclic if it contains all cycles from lengths 4 to |V(G)|. An n-dimensional crossed cube, an important variation of hypercube denoted as CQn, has been proved to be pancyclic because it contains all cycles whose lengths range from 4 to |V(CQn)|. Since vertex and edge faults may occur when a network is used, it is practical and meaningful to evaluate the performance of a faulty network. Moreover the vertex fault-tolerant Hamiltonicity and the edge fault-tolerant Hamiltonicity measure the performances of the Hamiltonian properties in the faulty networks. From this fault-tolerant concept, we propose using the fault-tolerant pancyclicity of networks to measure the performance of faulty networks. In this paper we consider a faulty crossed n-cube with vertex and/or edge faults here. Let the faulty set F be a subset of V(CQn)cup/E(CQn). We prove that any cycle of length l(4les/lles/|V(CQn)|-f/sub nu//) can be embedded into a faulty crossed n-cube CQn-F with dilation 1, where |F|=f/sub nu//+fe is less than n-2, f/sub nu// is the number of faulty vertices of F, fe is the number of faulty edges of F, and n is greater than 2. The results can readily be used in the optimum embedding of a ring of the specified length in a faulty crossed cube. © 2002 IEEE.

Collaboration consists mainly of two tasks; one is each partner's task which is done by the individual, the other is communication with each other. Both of them are very important for the smooth collaboration. From the viewpoint, the collaboration support system should be a coalition between the operation support and the communication support. We have developed the 3D shape evaluation support system in virtual space and the embodied virtual communication system for the analysis by synthesis. The fusion of two system is necessary for the collaboration support system for 3D shape evaluation in virtual space. From the viewpoint of communication, the talkers tend to prefer the situation in which they can share embodied interaction by observing their interaction of avatars including themselves in the same virtual space. However, the motion images including themselves would discourage them from the shape evaluation. In this paper, the influence of difference of the point of view on the shape evaluation in virtual space is investigated using the proposed system by the sensory evaluation of paired comparison and the questionnaire analysis. It is found that the subjects prefer the point of view from which they can see only their forearms' motion for the shape evaluation in virtual space.

Decision tree induction is one of the widely used classification approaches. It constructs a tree in which an internal node is split based on values of a selected attribute. Depending on the attribute selected at each level of the tree, a training dataset could lead to many different trees. Consequently, it is possible that an unseen case is classified into different and conflict classes using different trees. On the other hand, recently developed association rule based classifications are able to generate more interesting and useful roles than decision trees. However, the large number of rules without appropriate data structure brings the issue of efficiency. In this paper, we propose to unify decision tree classification with association-based classification using generalized decision trees (GDT). GDT generalizes the concept of decision tree to encode all interesting classification rules discovered based on association in a tree form. It inherits the merits of both approaches and removes their drawbacks. The data structure and related algorithms are discussed. Results of an experimental study are presented to indicate the advantages of GDT.

The selection of business partners (i.e. partnering) is a very important and critical activity in the operation of a company in a Virtual Enterprise (VE). In this paper, we focus on the negotiation process in VE formulation as a basic research to clarify its effective management. Each enterprise in the VE is defined as an agent with multi-utilities and agent behavior is modeled with an N-person cooperative game to make a compromise on their multiple objectives. We develop a computer simulation model to form a virtual enterprise through multiple negotiations amongst several potential members in the negotiation domain, and finally clarify the formulation dynamism with the negotiation process.

Building a human-computer interaction environment which supports natural communication and interaction among participant group is the key issue of virtual teleconferencing system, which needs to reestablish the correct space relationship of participants and synthesizing real size video into the virtual environment. We introduce a method that uses multiple projection screens driven by network-connected PCs to construct the spatial and realism semi-immerse virtual teleconferencing environment based on general projection transformation. The experiment shows that participants can interact and collaborate with natural interaction model in there.

A novel hierarchical approach to image retrieval is proposed. First, a color label histogram is used to effectively filter out the images that are not similar to the query image in color. The proposed color label histogram built by categorizing the pixel colors is computationally much more efficient compared to other approaches. Next, the class parameters of those images passing the first filter are used to identify the images similar to the query image in spatial layout. These class parameters are obtained automatically from the proposed unsupervised segmentation algorithm. Moreover, the wavelet decomposition coefficients are used to generate the initial partition for the segmentation algorithm. It doubles the segmentation performance. At the last stage, all images passing two filters are ranked based on the total normalized distance in color and spatial layout. The experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

An abstract multimedia semantic model called the multimedia augmented transition network (MATN) model is proposed to model the RTSP-based (real-time streaming protocol) multimedia presentation systems. RTSP provides a set of methods to support the functionality of "VCR-like" remote control on the client side so that users are allowed to control playback of the streaming media. The MATN model is used to model RTSP actions as well as temporal relations and synchronization control of the media streams. The advantages of using the MATN model are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of modification. Furthermore, a formal definition of the MATN model and modeling of RTSP actions using the MATN model are presented in detail. © 2002 IEEE.
