A new method of Chinese grammar rules learning is put forward in this paper. The key point of this method is to use part-of-speech (POS), semantic and contextual information together in learning and expressing Chinese grammar rules. In this way, not only Context Free Grammar (CFG) rules can be learnt, but also the ambiguous structures in POS can be identified automatically. Furthermore, non-ambiguous semantic rules and forbidden rules can be produced from ambiguous rules by using semantic and contextual information. Experimental results demonstrate that the complexity of Chinese parsing is greatly reduced using the different rules learnt by our method.

We discuss the feasibility of applying the distributed collaborative approach for improving the computational performance of genetic programming (GP), implemented on cost-efficient clusters or the Internet. The proposed approach exploits the coarse grained inherent parallelism in GP among relatively autonomous subpopulations. The developed architecture of a distributed collaborative parallel GP (DCPGP) features a single, global migration broker and centralized manager of the semi-isolated subpopulations, which contribute to quick propagation of the globally fittest individuals among the subpopulations; this reduces the performance demands on the underlying communication network, and achieves dynamic scaling-up features. DCPGP exploits the distributed component object model (DCOM) as a communication paradigm, which as a true system model offers generic support for the issues of naming, locating and security of communicating entities of the developed architecture. Experimentally obtained speedup results show that close to linear speedup characteristics of the prototype of DCPGP are achieved on a network of 8 workstations.

In this paper we describe our approach towards the second level digital techniques course suited for system-on-Chip (SoC) oriented curriculum. Due to enhanced utilization of synthesis techniques and higher level block-oriented design, new requirements for digital hardware design are set up. Our working hypothesis is that the course focus needs to be in a systematic working set based on general transformation and refinements are more important than a presentation of detailed and specific target solutions. Thus the student should master the methodology and understand the underlying principles, which will enable him or her, to utilize more effectively the advanced VHDL synthesis techniques, which are covered in the follow-up course.

In order to improve control performance in both dynamic transient and steady-state periods, this paper presents an enhanced hybrid FUZZY P+ID controller that is constructed by using an incremental fuzzy logic controller with twenty-five rules in place of the proportional term in a conventional PID controller. The enhanced FUZZY P+ID controller has only two additional parameters to be tuned based on its PID counterpart. The analysis shows that the stability behavior of a control system remains unchanged after replacing the PID controller by the FUZZY P+ID controller. Numerical simulation results of a nonlinear system for both step and tracking control demonstrate the superior control performance of the FUZZY P+ID controller.

In high-speed packages, the high-frequency characteristic of the interconnection structure becomes increasingly important. In this paper, the propagation characteristics of the stripline placed on the meshed ground plane (SMEP) are determined. The effective dielectric constant and the characteristic impedance of the single SMEP are determined by utilizing the full-wave analysis. For the longitudinally periodic structure modeling of SMEP, the finite-difference time-domain method based on Floquet's theorem is used. The slow wave effect and the high impedance characteristic are observed. In addition to the single SMEP analysis, the propagation and coupling property of the coupled SMEP is also presented, which is very important in the cross-talk modeling.
