To enhance the effectiveness of Thai text retrieval system, we need a significant improvement in automatic indexing. This paper is intended to provide the application of statistical and natural language processing techniques to obtain multilevel content identifiers: phrasal level, single term level and conceptual level. These multilevel indices will cover a very wide range of document retrieval without degradation of system performance. Automatic multilevel indexing for Thai text requires three processes: lexical token identification, phrase identification and extraction, and multilevel index generation. The results give a significant benefit both in precision and recall.

Thai text retrieval systems always involve documents that use loan words (borrowed from foreign language), especially in the area of science and engineering. This paper describes an algorithmic approach to backward machine transliteration aimed at improving the retrieval process. The approach consists of two main steps: identifying loan words and back transliterating. The model of backward transliteration works successfully at approximately 95% including phonetic equivalent.

Software reengineering for object-oriented rearchitecturing offers an exciting opportunity in migrating old legacy systems to evolvable systems in a disciplined manner. In the twofold-strategy software reengineering for object-oriented rearchitecturing, one of the problems to be solved is to derive a proper object-oriented model from the output of reverse engineering and the output of forward engineering. In general, the outputs of forward and reverse engineering can be inconsistent in their abstract levels, the amount of design information, naming conventions, and structures. In this paper we present an Object-oriented model Refinement Technique (ORT) to build a final object model in the twofold-strategy software reengineering. We first organize the information gained from reverse engineering into specification information tree, and then compare the entities in the specification information tree with the information from forward engineering using tree-structured data dictionary to produce the final model. We demonstrate the usability of ORT by an example.

We report on our recent empirical success in the study of a two-link brachiating robot. The "target dynamics" controller developed in our previous work (1997) is implemented on a physical system in our laboratory. The swing locomotion and swing-up behavior of the robot as well as continuous locomotion have been successfully attained. The experimental results illustrate the effectiveness of our control strategy.

This paper generalizes the load scaling techniques proposed in (Kuo and Mok, 1991) for fixed-priority real-time applications. A framework is proposed to adjust the system workload by relating the criticality and flexibility of a process to the resource allocation problem. A load adjustment procedure based on the approximation algorithm (Ni et al., 1997) is proposed to maximize the system profit in an on-line fashion. When the list of allowable configurations is implicitly given by scalable periodic processes, the corresponding load filtering problem is shown to be NP-complete. We also prove the upper bound of the system profit and provide a mechanism to balance the schedulability and the maximum profit of the system.

In this paper, we will pay attention to the spline wavelets which are real-type wavelets and have good characteristics such as compact support, the symmetric property and so on. We propose an RI-Spline wavelet which is complex-type wavelet and has the compact support, and we confirm the effectivity of this wavelet in the continuous case by a model signal. Next, for the application of the spline wavelets to control golf sound, we examine the relation between golf impact sound and vibration velocity of golf club. As a result, it is found that using the continuous and discrete wavelet transform together is effective for the analysis of the sound and the vibration. This technique will be useful for the unsteady signal analysis.

A new type of optical actuator is proposed by using the bimetal( Ni-Cr-Fe/36Ni-Fe ), which is to be developed for a optical micro-mechatronics system. The paper describes fundamental characteristics on a larger actuator both theoretically and experimentally. In order to identify some unknown parameters of the actuator, the results simulated by FEM are presented, and are compared with the experimental data. Furthermore, a numerical experiment on the optical micro-actuator is carried out to analyze step characteristic by FEM. Finally, the development of helical actuator is also provided.
