The main objective of this research is to produce a mathematical model that allows decreasing the electrical power consumption of centrifugation process based on attenuation measurements. The centrifugation time for desired separation efficiency may be measured to determine the power consumed of laboratory centrifuge device. The power consumption is one of several parameters that affect the system reliability and productivity. Attenuation measurements of wave propagated through blood sample during centrifugation process were used indirectly to measure the power consumption of device. A mathematical model for power consumption was derived and used to modify the speed profile of centrifuge controller. The power consumption model derived based on attenuation measurements has successfully save the power consumption of centrifugation process keeping high separation efficiency. 18kW.h monthly for 100 daily time device operation had been saved using the proposed model.

In this paper, a very small 2.45 GHz printed antenna suitable for WLAN application is proposed. In order to decrease the size of the antenna, multi-layer substrate and shorting plate method are used. A microstrip line which can lead to a good impedance matching and four pairs of slot are used to obtain acceptable value of return loss at the desired frequency. These techniques are used as a mean that they can be applied in this antenna design and also can give an effect on the antenna characteristics. This antenna shows an omni-directional radiation pattern similar to that of a monopole antenna. © 2012 IEEE.

During conversations, speakers employ a number of verbal and nonverbal mechanisms to establish who participates in the conversation, when, and in what capacity. Gaze cues and mechanisms are particularly instrumental in establishing the participant roles of interlocutors, managing speaker turns, and signaling discourse structure. If humanlike robots are to have fluent conversations with people, they will need to use these gaze mechanisms effectively. The current work investigates people's use of key conversational gaze mechanisms, how they might be designed for and implemented in humanlike robots, and whether these signals effectively shape human-robot conversations. We focus particularly on whether humanlike gaze mechanisms might help robots signal different participant roles, manage turn-exchanges, and shape how interlocutors perceive the robot and the conversation. The evaluation of these mechanisms involved 36 trials of three-party human-robot conversations. In these trials, the robot used gaze mechanisms to signal to its conversational partners their roles either of two addressees, an addressee and a bystander, or an addressee and a nonparticipant. Results showed that participants conformed to these intended roles 97% of the time. Their conversational roles affected their rapport with the robot, feelings of groupness with their conversational partners, and attention to the task. © 2012 ACM.

Nowadays, one of the most important research lines on smart power grids and microgrids is related to the evaluation of how such active infrastructures can increase energy efficiency, minimize greenhouse gases emissions and contribute to a deeper penetration of renewable energy sources. To investigate this issue, several test-bed facilities/demonstrators have been designed and are now running or under construction all over the world in order to perform experimental research and testing. Among them, it is important to cite the Smart Polygeneration Microgrid (SPM) developed by the University of Genoa at Savona Campus facilities. The present paper describes the SPM structure and proposes a general method to estimate its economic and environmental benefits connected with the use of renewable energy sources and cogeneration plants; in particular, the attention is focused on the SPM running costs, the CO 2 emissions and the primary energy use. The calculation method is explained in details, referring to the “winter configuration” of the SPM trigeneration system.

Performance and Effectiveness of UniFET^TM II MOSFET in HID Lamp Ballast

An advanced cell structure and lifetime control technology has enhanced on-resistance and reverse recovery performance of power MOSFET （metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor） simultaneously. This paper introduces a newly developed planar MOSFET--UniFETTM Ⅱ MOSFET--with highly improved body diode characteristics, and presents its performance and effectiveness. UniFET II MOSFET is divided into normal FET（field effect transistor）, FRFET （fast recovery field effect transistor）, and Ultra FRFET MOSFETs according to the concentration of lifetime control, and their reverse recovery times are about 70%, 25%, and 15% of that of a conventional MOSFET, respectively. To verify the performance and effectiveness of the new MOSFET, an experiment using a 150 W HID （high intensity discharge） lamp ballast that includes a mixed frequency inverter was implemented. As a result, it was verified that two UniFET Ⅱ MOSFETs can replace two conventional MOSFEs and four additional FRDs （fast recovery diodes） without MOSFET failure.

The recent advances in Grid and Cloud computing make new types of applications possible. At the same time, they require an infrastructure to implement heterogeneous computing resources time and cost-savely. Here, approaches that utilize design patterns, i.e., proven solutions to existing problems, seem to provide a good approach to enable these kind of applications. In this paper, we investigated which design patterns are already used in the area of Grid computing nowadays. After a brief description of the literature study design, we present our findings which include the discovered design patterns, corresponding categories, and application areas.

A reconfigurable antenna design for beam steer capability (RBSA) is proposed in this research. The RBSA has successfully achieved beam steer functionality at three angle direction of -42°, -28° and -15°. This is achieved by certain PIN diode configuration. The PIN diode is positioned at the specific location of the RBSA feed network. The proposed antenna consists of an array of three rectangular radiating elements. Aperture coupled feed technique applied in order to reduce the deterioration of power due to the presence of the PIN diode. RBSA has a small dimension of 100 mm × 100 mm that design on Taconic substrate. All designs and simulations have been carried out using CST Microwave Studio. This antenna is potentially useful for Wireless Interoperability Microwave (WiMAX) smart antenna system.

The importance of video surveillance applications has been increasing with the increase of crime and terrorism. In addition to traditional video cameras, the use of acoustic sensors in surveillance and monitoring applications is also becoming increasingly important. In this paper, we apply High-Order Local Auto-Correlation (HLAC), which has succeeded in video surveillance applications, to extract features from acoustic signals in order to construct an acoustic surveillance system based on a novelty detection approach. We also apply Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) to this problem. Experiment results confirmed that the AHLAC-based method outperforms the NMF-based and the cepstrum-based methods under all SNR conditions. The combined NMF-AHLAC method was able to improve the Equal Error Rate (EER) at lower SNRs, although the EERs at higher SNRs tend to degrade.

We introduce a counting stream register snoop filter, which improves the performance of existing snoop filters based on stream registers. Over time, this class of snoop filters loses the ability to filter memory addresses that have been loaded, and then evicted, from the caches that are filtered; they include cache wrap detection logic, which resets the filter whenever the contents of the cache have been completely replaced. The counting stream register snoop filter introduced here replaces the cache wrap detection logic with a direct-mapped update unit and augments each stream register with a counter, which acts as a validity checker; loading new data into the cache increments the counter, while replacements, snoopy invalidations, and evictions decrement it. A cache wrap is detected whenever the counter reaches zero. Our experimental evaluation shows that the counting stream register snoop filter architecture improves the accuracy compared to traditional stream register snoop filters for representative embedded workloads.
