Pedestrian detection is important in the computer vision field. In the nighttime, pedestrian detection is even more valuable. In this paper, we address the issue of detecting pedestrians in video streams from a moving camera at nighttime. Most nighttime human detection approaches only use single feature extracted from images. The effective image features in daytime environment may suffer from textureless, high contrast and low light problems at night. To deal with these issues, we first segment the foreground by using the proposed Smart Region Detection approach to generate candidates. Then we design a nighttime pedestrian detection system based on the AdaBoost and the support vector machine (SVM) classifiers with contour and histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) features to effectively recognize pedestrians from those candidates. Combining different type of complementary features improve the detection performance. Results show that our pedestrian detection system is promising in the nighttime environment.

Reliable access to dynamics is one of the central challenges in humanoid robotics. In this paper we consider the problem of computing both internal and external wrenches in open multiple branches kinematic chains, which are not equipped with joint-level torque sensors, but on the contrary are provided with inertial and tactile sensing, and a set of six- axes Force/Torque Sensors (FTS) distributed within the chain. The proposed method is grounded on the Enhanced Oriented Graph, a graph-representation of the kinematic chain, enriched with the information coming from the different sensors. Under suitable conditions, a maximum of N+1 external wrenches can be estimated from N six-axes FTS. The graph is built dynamically, and internal and external wrenches are consequently updated. Theoretical results have been implemented in a software library (iDyn) released with an open-source license (GPL) as part of the iCub software project. The proposed method has been applied to 32 of the 53 DOF of the iCub humanoid robot.

mRNA polyadenylation Is an essential mechanism in human genes and is direct linked to the termination of transcription. Alternative polyadenylation changes the length of the mature mRNA's 3'UTR. Since 3'UTRs have been shown to contain regulatory elements that control mRNA functioning, alternative polyadenylation plays an important role in controlling the expression of human genes. Prediction of polyadenylation sites can help with the identification of genes and aid our understanding of the mechanisms of alternative polyadenylation. In this study, we constructed a system for mRNA polyadenylation site prediction in human genes using SVM and based on an analysis of the sequence alignment between pair-end diTags (PET) and genome sequences. The PET sequences were mapped to the reference genome more accurate compared to earlier methods. We also analyzed single-site type and multiple-site type sequences PET sequence datasets and found that the frequencies of each nucleotide were different when the single-site type and multiple-site type PET sequences were compared.

This paper presents image restoration for Computed Tomography (CT) scan image particularly soft tissue area using image restoration technique. The approach of these technique are using inverse filtering which specifically involving Wiener filter to remove the noise and blur simultaneously in the CT image further restore the degraded CT image. CT scan image usually showing less detail visualization of soft tissue compare to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan image. The new CT image after restoration technique showed significantly high contrast compared to the original CT image produced by the CT scan machine. This procedure also shows comparison of different values use for noise to signal ratio (NSR) in Wiener filter equation to generate the estimate output of CT image. In this procedure values of NSR are treat as constant. ©2010 IEEE.

Rotor angle of the machine may accelerate or decelerate due to transient instability depending on the mechanical power or the turbine power, P m and electrical power, P e . As such, injecting an appropriate mechanical input power in accordance to the electrical power demand and losses at a critical time and condition will avoid major supply interruption due to unnecessary tripping of circuit breaker during transient instability. This paper presents Evolutionary Programming (EP) approach to optimize the mechanical input power in order to prevent transient instability in the system. The optimization is based on Area-based COI-referred Transient Stability Indexes: COI Angle and COI Speed, for a three area system with six generators. Results obtained from the experiment revealed that the EP approach is able to give an optimal solution.

Pin number or password that is used for authentication can be easily attacked. This limitation triggered the utilization of biometric for secured transactions. Biometric is unique to each individual and is reliable. Among the types of biometric being used currently, iris is the most accurate and it remains stable throughout a person's life. However the major challenge on iris and other biometric for authentication is the intra user variability in the acquired identifiers. Iris of the same person captured at different time may differ due to the signal noise of the iris camera. Traditional cryptography method is unable to encrypt and store biometric template, then perform the matching directly. Minor changes in the bits of the feature set extracted from the iris may lead to a huge difference in the results of the encrypted feature. In our approach, an iris biometric template is secured using iris biometric and passwords. Error Correction Code, ECC is introduced to reduce the variability and noise of the iris data. Experimental results show that this approach can assure a higher security with a low false rejection or false acceptance rate. The successful iris recognition rate using this approach is up to 97%. © 2010 IEEE.

Domain Name system (DNS) provides name to address mapping services for the entire chain of Internet connectivity. Hackers exploit this fact to damage different parts of the Internet. In this paper we clarify possible Denial of Service (DoS) threats against DNS. An Intrusion Detection system (IDS) is introduced is the system to detect and classify different types of DoS attacks against DNS. This system consists of a statistical preprocessor and a machine learning (ML) engine. Three different types of neural network classifiers and support vector machines are evaluated in a simulated network. The results show that a backpropagation neural network engine outperforms other types of classifiers with 99% accuracy.

Two-photon excitation techniques used in fabricating lines defects were done on a light emitting diode chip. Simultaneous detection of a quenched wide-gap semiconductor crystal has been observed using single- and two-photon photoluminescence. It was found at the quenched area, single-photon excitation gives photoluminescence read-out compared to two-photon excitation which no photoluminescence detected at the bandgap wavelength. This is due to the excitation states which the transition of electron for two-photon excitation to occur have been demolished by the annealing of the sample which involved two-photon quenching process. The dependency of excitation power with respective photoluminescence is elaborated to confirmed the single- and two-photon excitation photoluminescence methods Â© 2010 IEEE.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is one of the emerging technologies today. This application offers the user a service by which one can call another person at a low cost as compare with traditional phone services. One drawback to the Internet is spam, which are unsolicited or unwanted objects which often appear as unwanted messages in various email applications. For VoIP, spam refers to unsolicited and unwanted calls by the VoIP user. In this paper, we have purposed a solution to prevent the spam in VoIP. The CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell computers and Human Apart) method aims to determine whether the call is coming from a human or a machine. The key contribution of this paper is a proof-of-concept implementation of a CAPTCHA mechanism to prevent VoIP Spam. © 2010 IEEE.

To measure the influence of depth estimation error on depth coding and virtual view rendering in a free-viewpoint television (FTV) system, a multi-view depth estimation is proposed to solve the problem for coding and view synthesis. Firstly, the consistency of initial depth is checked and the influence of initial miss-matches is minimized by introducing an additional adaptive matching error that penalizes the unreliable matches. Then according to specific criteria, the multi-reference depth maps are merged into one disparity map to improve the quality of disparity map. Finally, a multi-lateral filtering is used to preserve details in the depth map and simultaneously smooth the depths in occluded areas at object boundary, less texture and discontinuity regions. Experimental results show a significant improvement of the initial input depth maps and coding efficiency, as well as a reduction of view synthesis artifacts.
