A combined adaptive/variable structure control approach is presented in this note, which exploits the good properties of the backstepping procedure, on one side, and of a second order sliding mode control algorithm, on the other. It retains the stability and convergence features of the original adaptive strategy, allowing, in addition, the presence of nonparametric uncertainties in the last two equations of the system, as well as ensuring robustness and a reduction of the computational load.

A method for sub-optimal traffic routing in a wireless network (or any other unreliable network infrastructure) by means of adaptive learning is presented. It is aimed to allow data transfer, using the terminals themselves as relays, without network manager interference. Routing decisions are based on the acquisition of parameterized knowledge that encodes a limited view of the network connectivity as seen from each of the terminals. The research was restricted to the master/slave (MS) control approach. The method allows one to spread a wireless network without a-priori knowledge of the connectivity and topology of the network, but all the same allow the network to operate.

Sub-Optimal Sliding Mode Control of Uncertain Second Order Dynamical systems

The solution of a tracking problem for a second order non linear system with uncertain dynamics and non complete available state is obtained by means of a procedure inspired by the solution to the classical minimum time optimal control problem. Two type of uncertain dynamics are considered with a constant bound, with a bound linearly dependent on the state-amplitude. In both cases, the applicability of the proposed control algorithm is proved provided that a proper control signal is chosen. The resulting system is characterized by a feedback switching logic causing the convergence of the system trajectory to the desired one (or to its δ-vicinity).

Robustness and performances in the presence of disturbances of an indirect adaptive control scheme driven by the prediction error which is designed by organizing a sliding mode are examined. A new idea for performance improvement in the presence of disturbances is presented. The idea is applied to plants with unknown relative degree. It is proved that the proposed scheme can provide arbitrarily improved transient performances.

In this work, we consider uncertain LTI SISO systems whose uncertainty is expressed in terms of frequency inequality. This latter is related to the concept of robust strictly positive real transfer function introduced in this paper. By suitably combining this concept with that of almost strictly positive realness, it is possible to define an approximate pole assignment objective and design a reduced order adaptive control scheme characterized by a globally asymptotically stable behaviour of the output error, internal stability and boundedness of the controller parameters.

When she returned to Canada she relocated to California. She spent a number of years living both in Los Angeles and coastal Northern California interspersed with several extended trips through the United States Mexico and Central America. Ms. McCulloch moved to Victoria British Columbia in 1989 and a year later registered in the cooperative education program in Electrical Engineering at the University of Victoria. She is presently in the fifth and final year of the program and has her sights set on graduate school. Besides the work described in this article she has been very much involved in the use of technology to assist in the delivery of curriculum at the senior secondary level. She lives on a country property a half-hour from the University with her husband her horse and three cats. W. Alfred Keddy:is an applications programmer/analyst for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria. He received a BEng (1988) in Electrical Engineering and an MASc (1994) from the University of Victoria. Contents and implementation of a computer laboratory for undergraduate electromagnetics are described. The laboratory consists of four 3-hour sessions covering vector calculus, Maxwell's equations (integral and differential forms), wave propagation in materials, and wave behavior at planar interfaces. Each session contains theory (in the Help file), animations (where relevant) and a quiz. The program runs on IBM compatible 486-based PCs in a Windows environment and uses the Borland C ++ 4.0 compiler.

This paper proposes a new spread spectrum modem configuration for a radio local area computer network to be implemented by combining fast frequency hopping (FFH) and direct sequence spread spectrum. To confirm the performance of the proposed modem, the average bit error probability under the multi-user Rayleigh fading channels is theoretically analyzed. Numerical results using a practical indoor microcellular channel parameter show that the proposed modem reduces the error floor without increasing the complexity of the modem.< >

(S'75–S'79–M'79–SM'86) received the Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University Dallas TX in 1979. He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

A DISTRIBUTED PROBLEM-SOLVING system FOR SHORT-TERM LOAD FORECASTING

Based on the attractive features of both distributed artificial intelligence and existing load forecasting techniques, a distributed problem solving system for short-term load forecasting is proposed. Such a distributed paradigm is a multi-agent system, each processing agent of which can compute autonomously and cooperate with other agents to reason an accurate and satisfactory solution for load forecasting. The designed load forecasting system solves problems using three basic modules: a blackboard module, knowledge sources, and a control mechanism. In addition, to achieve a high degree of accuracy in load forecasting, the existing techniques are embedded in the domain knowledge source and the root mean square error is referred to as the key driven by the constraint knowledge source. This system has been implemented by the expert system tool CLIPS in a SUN network environment and tested with practical data. It was found that the developed distributed system is a valuable tool for system operators for short-term load forecasting.

In order to increase the channel capacity of CDMA (code division multiple access) mobile and personal communication systems, a new time diversity CDMA scheme that employs orthogonal modulation is proposed. The time diversity CDMA scheme with orthogonal modulation reduces the required Eb/(No+Io) by 5 dB at Pe = 10/sup -2/ in Rayleigh fading environments with fDT (the product of Doppler frequency and one symbol duration) values ranging from 0.002 to 0.02. This improvement in required Eb/(No+Io) significantly increases the channel capacity of CDMA communication systems that have time varying channels. computer simulation results show that the required time delay values of the time diversity scheme are resonably short (20-100 symbols for 10 kbps transmission) for fDT values ranging from 0.002 to 0.02.
