We consider the pickup and delivery problem with time windows as a general model of the practical transportation problems in automated guided vehicle systems, logistic systems, etc. The problem requires that any paired pickup and delivery locations have to be served by one vehicle and the pickup location has to be scheduled before the corresponding delivery location in the route. In this paper, to search a set of routes close to the optimal one, we propose the autonomous distributed genetic approach based on the search space decomposition for the problem. In this approach, first, the search space is divided into sub-spaces based on the number of customers loaded in each vehicle. Then, GA is applied in each sub-space. In addition, the dynamic separation is applied for an efficient search. The effectiveness of the search space decomposition is evaluated by computational experiments

Studies on the inverse estimation of the heat flux or heat transfer coefficient in composite materials

The one dimensional inverse heat conduction problems of the composite materials with the unknown boundary conditions are discussed. Base on the boundary temperature measurement, the system's unknown boundary conditions such as the time varying heat flux or heat transfer coefficient can be estimated by input estimation (IE) approach inversely and the transient response of the temperature of the composite materials is calculated at the same time. The IE includes Kalman filter (KF) and weighted recursive least-square estimator (WRLSE). The unknown boundary conditions are regarded as the unknown inputs. Kalman filter (KF) is linear recursive least square error covariance estimation and its purpose is to generate the recursive innovation sequence. Because this sequence contains bias or systematic errors caused by implicit unknown time-variant inputs and random errors from the measurement data. WRLSE is used to identify the unknown inputs. The methodology for estimating the time varying unknown heat flux, heat transfer coefficient and temperature distribution of the composite materials is also presented in this work. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the unknown heat flux, heat transfer coefficient and the temperature transient response of the composite materials.

We present the use of the polysaccharide chitosan for immobilizing biomolecules on microfabricated device surfaces. The main advantages of chitosan are its abundance of primary amine groups and its ability to be electrodeposited. Biomolecules are easily attached to chitosan 's amines by standard glutaraldehyde chemistry. The electrodeposition of chitosan allows accurate spatial and temporal control of biomolecule placement. We have demonstrated this biofunctionalization method for two different bioMEMS devices: a biophotonic sensor and a micromechanical biosensor. We have successfully assembled probe DNA on each of them and detected hybridization with target DNA as a demonstration of sensor operation. Here, we briefly present the fabrication procedure and testing results for both of these bioMEMS sensing devices

The static state estimator (SE) is a data processing algorithm for converting redundant meter readings and other available information into an estimate of the static state vector. This work centres on the general nature of the problem, mathematical modelling, genetic algorithm (GA) application for state estimate, and concepts underlying the detection and identification of errors in various ranges of standard deviation (s). Calculation of gain matrix (G) and its inversion are totally eliminated in estimating the optimal state vector. GA approach for SE is illustrated with sample systems. The solution obtained using GA is followed, by a reliable bad data processing method on the sample systems and the results are compared with other methods. The comparison confirms the capability of the proposed method for SE in power system.

Comparison of Attribute Reduction Methods for Coronary Heart Disease Data by Decision Tree Classification

Attribute reduction is necessary in decision making system. Selecting right attribute reduction method is more important. This paper studies the reduction effects of principal components analysis (PCA) and system reconstruction analysis (SRA) on coronary heart disease data. The data set contains 1723 records, and 71 attributes in each record. PCA and SRA are used to reduce attributes number (less than 71 ) in the data set. And then decision tree algorithms, C4.5, classification and regression tree ( CART), and chi-square automatic interaction detector ( CHAID), are adopted to analyze the raw data and attribute reduced data. The parameters of decision tree algorithms, including internal node number, maximum tree depth, leaves number, and correction rate are analyzed. The result indicates that, PCA and SRA data can complete attribute reduction work,and the decision-making rate on the reduced data is quicker than that on the raw data; the reduction effect of PCA is better than that of SRA, while the attribute assertion of SRA is better than that of PCA. PCA and SRA methods exhibit goodperformance in selecting and reducing attributes.

We propose a family of finite approximations for the departure process of a BMAP/MAP/1 queue. The departure process approximations are derived via an exact aggregate solution technique (called ETAQA) applied to M/G/1-type Markov processes. The proposed approximations are indexed by a parameter n (n > 1), which determines the size of the output model as n + 1 block levels of the M/G/1-type process. This output approximation preserves exactly the marginal distribution of the true departure process and the lag correlations of the inter-departure times up to lag n-2. Experimental results support the applicability of the proposed approximation in traffic-based decomposition of queueing networks.

Chronic and terminally ill patients are disproportionately affected by medical errors. In addition, the elderly suffer more preventable adverse events than younger patients. Targeting system wide 'error-reducing' reforms to vulnerable populations can significantly reduce the incidence and prevalence of human error in medical practice. Recent developments in health informatics, particularly the application of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques such as data mining, neural networks, and case-based reasoning (CBR), presents tremendous opportunities for mitigating error in disease diagnosis and patient management. Additionally, the ubiquity of the Internet creates the possibility of an almost ideal network for the dissemination of medical information. We explore the capacity and limitations of web-based palliative information systems (IS) to transform the delivery of care, streamline processes and improve the efficiency and appropriateness of medical treatment. As a result, medical error(s) that occur with patients dealing with severe, chronic illness and the frail elderly can be reduced. The palliative model grew out of the need for pain relief and comfort measures for patients diagnosed with cancer. Applied definitions of palliative care extend this convention, but there is no widely accepted definition. This research will discuss the development life cycle of two palliative information systems: the CONFER QOLP management information system (MIS), currently used by a community-based palliative care program in Brooklyn, New York, and the CAREN case-based reasoning prototype. CONFER is a web platform based on the idea of 'eCare'. CONFER uses XML (extensible mark-up language), a W3C-endorced standard mark up to define systems data. The second system, CAREN, is a CBR prototype designed for palliative care patients in the cancer trajectory. CBR is a technique, which tries to exploit the similarities of two situations and match decision-making to the best-known preceden

The article deals with an improved method of analog-digital system (ADS) evaluation as the system objects with the dynamic nonlinear and stochastic properties. A proposed method makes it possible to estimate the dynamic of ADS as in time, as in spectral domain, without the use of additional hardware or the need for additional measurements. The implementation of the method that is described is based on a broadband test signal that simulates actual operating conditions. The method makes it possible to avoid the standard problems associated with precise estimation of the spectrum of a broadband signal. It has been validated for evaluation of the ADS with digital resolution up to 14 bit and conversion rate -6-10 Gbit per second.

During the last years there have been a lot of proposals in the literature for systems that attempt to manage the process of trust establishment. However, the engineering details related to the exchange and negotiation of authorization credentials have not received similar attention. Existing solutions like SSL/TLS and IPsec have limitations that minimize their applicability. In this paper we propose a new protocol, the authorization exchange protocol (AXP), that provides a modular and extensible solution to this problem. It is situated between the application and the network layers acting as an authorization middleware component and handles the process of transmitting and receiving service access requests and replies, along with the credentials that are required to support them. In order to allow its use in securing delay sensitive applications, AXP has been designed to work over unreliable datagram transport protocols. We also present a case study and evaluate the performance of our proposal.

The IETF NEMO working group on network mobility is currently standardizing a basic support for moving networks. We need a handoff scheme for achieving the performance transparency during the movement of mobile routers in nested mobile networks. But the existed handoff schemes for a mobile host are not suitable for network mobility because packet transmission delay and traffic increase during mobile router's handoff in nested mobile networks. This paper proposes a new seamless handoff scheme using the bi-casting based on IPv6 in nested mobile networks. Compared with the handoff schemes using bi-directional edge tunneling for host mobility support on simulation, the results show that the proposed handoff scheme reduces the packet delay during a mobile router changes the point of attachment in nested mobile networks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
