The use of weathering steel is increasingly important to prevent further corrosion of steel due to its special characteristics of forming a stable and protective oxide layer termed rust patina in suitable environments. As a result, the weathering steel having natural corrosion resistance is becoming an appropriate choice for structural components of new steel bridges since 1964. The monitoring and condition assessment for weathering steel bridges are becoming important aspects on appropriate material selection in planning and design stages, corrosion prediction and further maintenance planning during their service life. The popular NDT methods such as ion transfer resistance method, electrochemical potential method, X-ray diffraction method, spectroscopic identification techniques are employed to measure the corrosion behaviors from the point of view of corrosion loss, and chemic, electric and magnetic properties of the rust patina. Note that human vision has played an indispensable role in extracting effective and directive information from the external appearance. Since the atmospheric environment primarily causes the corrosion of the exterior of the weathering steel, the state of the surface rust is sufficient to exhibit the corrosion damage. Japan Association of Steel Bridge Construction and Japan Iron and Steel Federation proposed a standard criterion to evaluate the state of weathering steel based on visual inspection and a supplemental rust thickness measurement, and categorized the surface condition into 5 levels ranging from 5 to 1. It is obvious that the expert visual inspection and evaluation are subject to the impacts of subjective decision-making such as experience, ages, and even temper. Mobile applications, for example mobile robots, are playing an increasingly important role in our everyday lives. Since components of these applications share their environment with each other and with humans, they need to coordinate their behavior to respect strong safety constraints. Unfortunately, they typically make use of wireless networks in which real-time communication is highly unreliable, making coordination particularly challenging. We present a real-time communication model for wireless networks that takes into account that communication might not be reliable. It provides feedback to mobile components about the state of communication, so that they can adapt their behavior accordingly. We show how this model can be used to build reliable mobile applications in wireless networks: this involves specifying the safety constraints that need to be respected, and translating them into constraints on the behavior of individual components. To illustrate our approach, we describe an example from the intelligent transportation systems domain

The traveling salesman problem (TSP) is a very hard optimization problem in the field of operations research. It has been shown to be NP-hard, and is an often-used benchmark for new optimization techniques. This paper proposes an improved multi-agent approach for solving large TSP. This proposed approach mainly includes three kinds of agents with different function. The first kind of agent is conformation agent and its function is generating the new solution continuously. The second kind of agent is optimization agent and its function is optimizing the current solutions group. The third kind of agent is refining agent and its function is refining the best solution from the beginning of the trial. At same time, there are many sub-agents in each kind of agent. These sub-agents accomplish the task of its superior agent cooperatively. At the end of this paper, the experimental results have shown that the proposed hybrid approach has good performance with respect to the quality of solution and the speed of computation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The entropy solutions of the Riemann problem for the kinematic-wave model are described for (entrant and exiting) boundary conditions, interfaces (e.g., lane drops), and point constrictions (e.g., bottlenecks or signalized intersections) for kinematic-wave models. These results are used to obtain analytic solutions and computational solutions, by the method of Godunov, for the three test scenarios earlier suggested by Ross. Results show that the kinematic-wave model, with a correct computational solution (i.e., converging to the entropy solution), correctly produces the analytic (entropy) solutions of the kinematic-wave model and that analytic and computational solutions both satisfy intuitive expectations at least as well as the novel model suggested by Ross and even avoid some acknowledged deficiencies of the latter. They also emphasize the necessity of using discrete approximations that satisfy the entropy condition and of exercising care in ensuring that the discretization parameters are sufficiently small.

Cyber theft is a serious threat to Internet security. It is one of the major security concerns by both network service providers and Internet users. Though sensitive information can be encrypted when stored in non-volatile memory such as hard disks, for many e-commerce and network applications, sensitive information is often stored as plaintext in main memory. Documented and reported exploits facilitate an adversary stealing sensitive information from an application's memory. These exploits include illegitimate memory scan, information theft oriented buffer overflow, invalid pointer manipulation, integer overflow, password stealing Trojans and so forth. Today's computing system and its hardware cannot address these exploits effectively in a coherent way. This paper presents a unified and lightweight solution, called InfoShield that can strengthen application protection against theft of sensitive information such as passwords, encryption keys, and other private data with a minimal performance impact. Unlike prior whole memory encryption and information flow based efforts, InfoShield protects the usage of information. InfoShield ensures that sensitive data are used only as defined by application semantics, preventing misuse of information. Comparing with prior art, InfoShield handles a broader range of information theft scenarios in a unified framework with less overhead. Evaluation using popular network client-server applications shows that InfoShield is sound for practical use and incurs little performance loss because InfoShield only protects absolute, critical sensitive information. Based on the profiling results, only 0.3% of memory accesses and 0.2% of executed codes are affected by InfoShield.

Height measurement using sphere matching method in the stereo vision system

This paper describes the system to measure height of persons by triangulation using stereo vision which installs two cameras on the ceiling in a stably lighted room. We propose the sphere matching method which assumes a human head as a sphere. The feature of this measurement system is as follows: Since a sphere template is used for head matching in the edge images of a left camera and a right camera, the proposed method is hard to be influenced of each camera's field angle. Since the head edge in the images is used, even when there is no feature in top of the head, the human height can be measured. As the result of experiment by this system, average error 1.36 [cm] and maximum error 3.85 [cm] were gained, which means high precision on the height measurement. And height measurement process, including input of a pair of stereo images, was attained in approx. 0.8 [s] (Pentium III, 1.0GHz). Note that this system is a simple setup consisting of stereo camera and a general-purpose personal computer with one video capture board installed.

The accuracy of a gyroscope free INS is deeply affected by the bias, scale factor and misalignment. However, these error parameters can be obtained by calibration. This paper presents two research issues. The first is an improvement to the original six-accelerometer model to achieve more realistic performance. The second is a novel calibration method for the proposed six-accelerometer INS. In navigation applications the improved model will determine the rotational and translational acceleration of a vehicle from the six accelerometer outputs. The proposed calibration method will decrease the system error to enhance the navigation performance.

A data clustering method based on the generalized cellular automata (GCA) is presented. The stochastic process over a GCA array is used to realize the self-organization of data clusters for the given data sets. Due to its particular stochastic characteristics, GCA can deal with dynamical data, noise data, multi-type data, asymmetrically distributed data, multi-shaped-cluster data, high-dimensional data and massive data sets. The GCA-based data clustering also has advantages over other sequential methods in terms of the high parallelism, the learning ability, and the easier hardware implementation with the VLSI systolic technology.

The resources allocation and task assignment in complex distributed network environment is a typical problem of multi-agent systems (MAS). Even without taking into account interactions, coordinations, and a variety of random phenomena in networks, the bandwidth allocation problem in ATM networks is also NP-complete. This paper presents a particle dynamics approach (GPDA) that transforms the MAS problem-solving into the kinematics and dynamics of particles in a force-field. As an important application for problem-solving in MAS, this paper uses GPDA to optimize the bandwidth allocation and QoS in ATM networks. The GPA has features in terms of the high-degree parallelism, multi-objective optimization, multi-type coordination, multi-granularity coalition, and easier hardware implementation. Simulations and comparisons show the effectiveness and suitability of GPDA.
