In this paper, we develop a 4-DOF force display system for the analysis by synthesis of facial color for the interaction with anthropomorphic agent. By using the system, we analyze the changes in facial skin temperature and facial color associated with circulation dynamics in response to forced actions. On the basis of the analysis, we propose a synthetic method for the affect display of virtual face with facial color and expression in force display, and the effectiveness of the method is confirmed. Finally, we develop a prototype of virtual arm wrestling system with anthropomorphic agent using synthesized dynamic three-dimensional facial color and expression.

This paper presents a feasibility study on the application of pattern analysis techniques to classify load change transients and incipient abnormalities in an underground distribution cable lateral. The data were collected using an on-line monitoring system installed in a residential area in Dallas. A set of features obtained from wavelet packet analysis was evaluated. Methods of dimensionality reduction were employed to overcome the curse of dimensionality while preserving a good classification rate. The classification results using k-nearest-neighbor (KNN) classifiers show that the proposed methodology can be used to classify load change transients and incipient abnormalities.

We have implemented a real time front end for detecting voiced speech and estimating its fundamental frequency. The front end performs the signal processing for voice-driven agents that attend to the pitch contours of human speech and provide continuous audiovisual feedback. The algorithm we use for pitch tracking has several distinguishing features: it makes no use of FFTs or autocorrelation at the pitch period;it updates the pitch incrementally on a sample-by-sample basis;it avoids peak picking and does not require interpolation in time or frequency to obtain high resolution estimates;and it works reliably over a four octave range, in real time, without the need for postprocessing to produce smooth contours. The algorithm is based on two simple ideas in neural computation: the introduction of a purposeful nonlinearity, and the error signal of a least squares fit. The pitch tracker is used in two real time multimedia applications: a voice-to-MIDI player that synthesizes electronic music from vocalized melodies, and an audiovisual Karaoke machine with multimodal feedback. Both applications run on a laptop and display the user's pitch scrolling across the screen as he or she sings into the computer.

To speed up on-line analytical processing, data warehousing systems materialize views derived from several operational databases. When the operational databases happen to change, the materialized views get stale. To enhance the freshness of the materialized views, we proposed a new concurrency control scheme, which enables a number of update transactions to execute concurrently with analytical transactions. When an update transaction attempts to modify the data that is using by any analytical transactions, this scheme immediately allows the update transaction to create a new transient version for the data. Due to this selective versioning, analytical transactions could continuously access fresh data.

In this paper, we propose a new controller design method, where the identification technique, which directly acquires any order of reduced model, is applied to the feedforward controller design composed of time delays and inverse dynamics of a controlled object. By applying the proposed controller, the tracking error with reference signal of the N-th power of t becomes zero when the future reference signal is available. The resulting system has neither deterioration in the feedback characteristics nor increase in the tuning man-hour because feedforward controllers do not affect the feedback characteristics and the feedback controller can be designed with the accumulated know-how.

This paper presents a low-voltage low-power IF 455-kHz signal processor that contains a three-stage limiting amplifier and an FM/FSK demodulator. The limiting amplifier uses an on-chip feedforward offset cancellation circuit. The FM/FSK demodulator employs a quadrature detector that is composed of an on-chip phase detector and an external tank phase shifter. The demodulation constant is 20 mV/kHz with masimum /spl plusmn/10-kHz frequency deviation. The IF signal processor that consumes 2.3 mW from a single 2-V power supply demonstrates a high sensitivity of -72 dBm. It occupies an active area of 0.2 mm/sup 2/ using 0.6-/spl mu/m digital CMOS technology.
