The characteristics between a set of alternating-polarity ring magnets and a superconductor are studied. The magnets have strong repulsion and attraction forces with the superconductor owing to the pinning effect. Using these characteristics a prototype of a superconducting journal bearing with a magnet shaft supported by a cylindrical housing has been developed. The superconducting journal bearing consists of a superconducting housing with four high T(c) superconductors (type-II superconductors) and a magnet shaft as the rotor of alternating-polarity ring magnets of the same size. The magnet shaft can be levitated in the centre of the housing without contact. Levitation and drag forces of the superconducting journal bearing are investigated. The levitation force shows circular hysteresis loops depending on the displacement because of the flux pinning effect. Owing to the simple and useful structure of the superconducting journal bearing it is applicable to practical devices in the industrial field.

Ad hoc network consists of a set of identical nodes that move freely and independently and communicate among themselves via wireless links. The most interesting feature of this network is that they do not require any existing infrastructure of central administration and hence is very suitable for temporary communication links in an emergency situation. This flexibility, however, is achieved at a price of communication uncertainty induced due to frequent topology changes. In this article, we have tried to identify the system dynamics using the proven concepts of time series modeling. Here, we have analyzed variation of link utilization between any two particular nodes over a fixed area for differentmobility patterns under different routing algorithm. We have considered four different mobility models - (i) Gauss-Markov mobility model, (ii) Manhattan Grid Mobility model and (iii) Random Way Point mobility model and (iv) Reference Point Group mobility model. The routing protocols under which, we carried out our experiments are (i) Ad hoc On demand Distance Vector routing (AODV), (ii) Destination Sequenced Distance Vector routing (DSDV) and (iii) Dynamic Source Routing (DSR). The value of link load between two particular nodes behaves as a random variable for any mobility pattern under a routing algorithm. The pattern of link load for every combination of mobility model and for every routing protocol can be well modeled as an autoregressive model of order p i.e. AR(p). The order of p is estimated and it is found that most of them are of order 1 only.

Generalized synchronization of two discrete systems was discussed. By constructing appropriately nonlinear coupling terms, some sufficient conditions for determining the generalized synchronization between the drive and response systems were derived. In a positive invariant and bounded set, many chaotic maps satisfy the sufficient conditions. The effectiveness of the sufficient conditions is illustrated by three examples.

In response to the increasing penetration of volatile and uncertain renewable energy,the regional transmission organizations(RTOs)have been recently focusing on enhancing the models of pump storage hydropower(PSH)plants,which are one of the key flexibility assets in the day-ahead(DA)and real-time(RT)markets,to further boost their flexibility provision *** by the recent research works that explored the potential benefits of excluding PSHs’cost-related terms from the objective functions of the DA market clearing model,this paper completes a rolling RT market scheme that is compatible with the DA ***,with the vision that PSHs could be permitted to submit state-of-charge(SOC)headrooms in the DA market and to release them in the RT market,this paper uncovers that PSHs could increase the total revenues from the two markets by optimizing their SOC headrooms,assisted by the proposed tri-level optimal SOC headroom ***,in the proposed tri-level model,the middle and lower levels respectively mimic the DA and RT scheduling processes of PSHs,and the upper level determines the optimal headrooms to be submitted to the RTO for maximizing the total revenue from the two *** case studies quantify the profitability of the optimal SOC headroom submissions as well as the associated financial risks.

Modern datacenter servers hosting popular Internet services face significant and multi-facet challenges in performance and power control. The user-perceived performance is the result of a complex interaction of complex workloads in a very complex underlying system. Highly dynamic and bursty workloads of Internet services fluctuate over multiple time scales, which has a significant impact on processing and power demands of datacenter servers. High-density servers apply virtualization technology for capacity planning and system manageability. Such virtuMized computersystems are increasingly large and complex. This paper surveys representative approaches to autonomic performance and power control on virtualized servers, which control the quality of service provided by virtualized resources, improve the energy efficiency of the underlying system, and reduce the burden of complex system management from human operators. It then presents three designed self-adaptive resource management techniques based on machine learning and control for percentile-based response time assurance, non-intrusive energy-efficient performance isolation, and joint performance and power guarantee on virtualized servers. The techniques were implemented and evaluated in a testbed of virtualized servers hosting benchmark applications. Finally, two research trends are identified and discussed for sustainable cloud computing in green datacenters.
