Several methods exist for the assignment of trust to the nodes present in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). In this paper we develop a new algorithm for calculation of trust of individual nodes using both Direct and Indirect Trusts and thereby use the calculated trusts for determination of the different route trusts (RTs) to the Base Station. We present a link state routing protocol based on trust which protects the WSN against routing attacks by eliminating the un-trusted nodes beforehand. It then forms the routes and finds the best trustworthy route among them by comparing the values of all the calculated route trusts as for each and every route present in the network. This paper also shows the advantage of inclusion of Indirect Trusts in addition to the Direct Trusts. Finally, we compare our work with the most prevalent routing protocols and show its benefits over them.

Organizational and technical approaches have proven successful in increasing the performance and preventing risks at socio-technical systems at all scales. Nevertheless, damaging events are often unavoidable due to a wide and dynamic threat landscape and enabled by the increasing complexity of modern systems. For overall performance and risk control at the system level, resilience can be a versatile option, in particular for reducing resources needed for system development, maintenance, reuse, or disposal. This paper presents a framework for a resilience assessment and management process that builds on existing risk management practice before, during, and after potential and real events. It leverages tabular and matrix correlation methods similar as standardized in the field of risk analysis to fulfill the step-wise resilience assessment and management for critical functions of complex systems. We present data needs for the method implementation and output generation, in particular regarding the assessment of threats and the effects of counter measures. Also included is a discussion of how the results contribute to the advancement of functional risk control and resilience enhancement at system level as well as related practical implications for its efficient implementation. The approach is applied in the domains telecommunication, gas networks, and indoor localization systems. Results and implications are further discussed. © 2021, The Author(s).

In this paper, two approaches to utilizing contextual information in semantic image analysis are presented and comparatively evaluated. Both approaches make use of spatial context in the form of fuzzy directional relations. The first one is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA), which is employed in order to decide upon the optimal semantic image interpretation by treating semantic image analysis as a global optimization problem. On the other hand, the second method follows a Binary Integer Programming (BIP) technique for estimating the optimal solution. Both spatial context techniques are evaluated with several different combinations of classifiers and low-level features, in order to demonstrate the improvements attained using spatial context in a number of different image analysis schemes.

In this paper, we analyze the scattering of an incident plane wave on a space-time metal slab in the presence of dispersion. Frequency dispersion is taken into account here by means of the Drude model. Analytical results, obtained via first-principle calculations, are in good agreement with in-house finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) computations.

Recognition of food-texture attributes using an in-ear microphone

Food texture is a complex property;various sensory attributes such as perceived crispiness and wetness have been identified as ways to quantify it. Objective and automatic recognition of these attributes has applications in multiple fields, including health sciences and food engineering. In this work we use an in-ear microphone, commonly used for chewing detection, and propose algorithms for recognizing three food-texture attributes, specifically crispiness, wetness (moisture), and chewiness. We use binary SVMs, one for each attribute, and propose two algorithms: one that recognizes each texture attribute at the chew level and one at the chewing-bout level. We evaluate the proposed algorithms using leave-one-subject-out cross-validation on a dataset with 9 subjects. We also evaluate them using leave-one-food-type-out cross-validation, in order to examine the generalization of our approach to new, unknown food types. Our approach performs very well in recognizing crispiness (0.95 weighted accuracy on new subjects and 0.93 on new food types) and demonstrates promising results for objective and automatic recognition of wetness and chewiness. The SCHEMA Network of Excellence aims to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for content-based semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. In this paper, advances in the development of the SCHEMA reference system are reported, focusing on the application of region-based image retrieval using automatic segmentation. More specifically, the integration of four segmentation algorithms and the MPEG-7 eXperimentation Model with the reference system are discussed, along with the motivation behind these and various other choices that were made during the development of the reference system. Experimental results for this system, as well as results for an earlier version of it employing proprietary descriptors, are shown using a common collection of images. Comparative evaluation of these versions, both in terms of retrieval accuracy and in terms of time-efficiency, allows the evaluation of the reference system as a whole as well as the evaluation of the usability of different components integrated with it, such as the MPEG-7 eXperimentation Model. These results illustrate the efficiency of the proposed system, as well as its suitability in serving as a test-bed for evaluating and comparing different algorithms and approaches pertaining to the content-based and semantic manipulation of visual information.

The success of cellular communications networks shows the interest of users in mobility. Host mobility support in IP networks is a first step in the adaptation of these networks to the needs of users in this field. But, there exists also the need of supporting the movement of a complete network that changes its point of attachment to the fixed infrastructure. This paper describes the architecture designed in the EU DAIDALOS II project to provide Internet access through moving networks. The designed moving networks architecture support the following main features: route optimisation, multicast traffic delivery, security and authentication integration, end-to-end QoS and interaction with localised mobility management solutions.

The evolution of networks demands increasingly stringent performance requirements from users, driven by the deployment of innovative services such as augmented reality and self-driving cars. To meet these demands, network management and control tasks require heightened flexibility and responsiveness. Network programmability paradigms, particularly Software Defined Networking (SDN), have emerged as a solution, facilitating the integration of Artificial Intelligence and the deployment of new functionalities. However, The proliferation of heterogeneous control agents in SDN environments can lead to conflicts, resulting in network instability, such as Service Level Agreement (SLA) violations, and inefficient resource usage. Thanks to its ability to enable the execution of what-if analysis, the Digital Twin (DT) technology offers a promising approach to handle conflicts among decisions made by different SDN applications. In this work, we propose a framework that integrates DTs of the network data plane, introducing a new architecture to support synchronization and communication within the ecosystem. Furthermore, a discussion on its integration on the classical SDN workflow is discussed. Additionally, a case study focusing on Industry 5.0 is presented to illustrate the implementation of the data plane DT, demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework in conflict resolution.

Heart failure exacerbations (HFE) represent a critical challenge in healthcare due to their significant role in global mortality. The rise of home and wearable devices capable of monitoring cardiac conditions provides valuable opportunities for data-driven analysis and HFE detection. However, these devices frequently generate low-quality measurements with irregular sampling frequencies and high rates of missing data. Our paper presents a methodology that processes these measurements as a three-dimensional tensor, applying a low-rank tensor completion scheme to manage missing data effectively, thus facilitating anomaly detection without necessitating data imputation. We validate our method on a dataset from 4 patients with chronic HF in the compensation phase, collected at the Hospital Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico in Rome, Italy. Our results demonstrate the tensor-based method’s superiority over traditional techniques, highlighting its potential for detecting anomalies within complex multivariate time series data. This research emphasizes the critical role of advanced data analysis in enhancing HFE identification, which could lead to improved patient care and reduced hospitalization rates.
