In this paper we investigate the dynamics of contrast agent concentration as blood flow estimation method utilizing contributions from three different fields: morphologic and dynamic angiographic X-ray scans, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and Laser-Doppler-Velocimetry (LDV) measurements. Based on dynamic angiographic X-ray measurements we exploit dedicated CFD simulations, carried out specifically for each target object, for the adaptation of the plain video densitometric results. Finally, a comparison with LDV is presented.

This paper presents a fabrication approach towards commercialization of optical Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) for anti-counterfeiting. We address the limitations of existing complex and expensive implementations by demonstrating strong, intrinsic optical PUFs using computer-Generated Holograms (CGHs) fabricated with industrial-friendly lasers. This novel method offers exceptional security with very low probability of cloning through a low-cost, production-line friendly set-up and a robust signature encoding scheme that utilizes nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques, to differentiate legitimate variations from counterfeiting attempts. This research paves the way for widespread adoption of PUF technology for real-world applications.

This paper deals with the problem of deploying a team of flying robots to perform surveillance coverage missions over a terrain of arbitrary morphology. In such missions, a key factor for the successful completion is the knowledge of the terrain's morphology. In this paper, we introduce a two-step centralized procedure to align optimally a swarm of flying vehicles for the aforementioned task. Initially, a single robot constructs a map of the area of interest using a novel monocular-vision-based approach. A state-of-the-art visual-SLAM algorithm tracks the pose of the camera while, simultaneously, building an incremental map of the surrounding environment. The map generated is processed and serves as an input in an optimization procedure using the cognitive adaptive methodology initially introduced in [1], [2]. The output of this procedure is the optimal arrangement of the robot team, which maximizes the monitored area. The efficiency of our approach is demonstrated using real data collected from aerial robots in different outdoor areas.

In the rapidly growing interest in digital identity management, there is an important shift toward adopting verifiable credentials, often based on blockchain technology. This transition highlights a growing interest in the concept of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), a paradigm that empowers individuals with control over their own digital identities through the use of verifiable credentials. This paper introduces a novel access control framework that leverages the principles of SelfSovereign Identity to significantly enhance the security of system access based on the users’ credentials. By integrating the decentralized and user-centric nature of SSI, our proposed framework aims to address existing vulnerabilities in traditional access control systems. It provides a robust, scalable, and controlled mechanism that ensures higher levels of trust and security in digital interactions. This approach aligns with the broader digital identity trends favoring transparency, user autonomy, and trust.

This work proposes a policy iteration procedure for the synthesis of optimal and globally stabilizing control policies for Linear Time Invariant (LTI) Asymptotically Null-controllable with Bounded Inputs (ANCBI) systems. This class includes systems with eigenvalues on the imaginary axis (possibly repeated) but no pole with positive real part. The proposed policy iteration relies on a class of piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions which is non-differentiable, but continuous, and polynomial in both the state and the deadzone functions of the input signals. The second step of the policy iteration is based on a piecewise control policy improvement. An important aspect of the proposed piecewise policy is that at each step of the iteration the computed policy is globally stabilizing and the existence of an improving value function is guaranteed as well. The solution to the inequalities which is required to hold at each step of the policy iteration, is obtained by solving Sum-of-Squares Programs (SOSP) that can be efficiently implemented with semidefinite programming (SDP) solvers.

This paper describes the process followed to implement a system to characterize the complex permittivity of materials in the 10-330 GHz frequency band. Firstly, the method used and the system’s calibration process are shown, consisting of a double calibration TRL (Thru-Reflect-Line) and GRL (Gated-Reflect-Line). Subsequently, a smoothing technique is used to improve the accuracy of the results. Finally, a test is performed on quartz and glass fiber samples, showing that the results are quite reliable over the entire measured bandwidth.

We present IDTxl (the Information Dynamics Toolkit xl), a new open source Python toolbox for effective network inference from multivariate time series using information theory, available from GitHub (https://***/pwollstadt/IDTxl). Information theory (Cover & Thomas, 2006;MacKay, 2003;Shannon, 1948) is the mathematical theory of information and its transmission over communication channels. Information theory provides quantitative measures of the information content of a single random variable (entropy) and of the information shared between two variables (mutual information). The defined measures build on probability theory and solely depend on the probability distributions of the variables involved. As a consequence, the dependence between two variables can be quantified as the information shared between them, without the need to explicitly model a specific type of dependence. Hence, mutual information is a model-free measure of dependence, which makes it a popular choice for the analysis of systems other than communication channels. Transfer entropy (TE) (Schreiber, 2000) is an extension of mutual information that measures the directed information transfer between time series of a source and a target variable. TE has become popular in many scientific disciplines to infer dependencies and whole networks from data. Notable application domains include neuroscience (Wibral, Vicente, & Lindner, 2014) and dynamical systems analysis (Lizier, Prokopenko, & Zomaya, 2014) (see Bossomaier, Barnett, Harré, & Lizier (2016) for an introduction to TE and a comprehensive discussion of its application). In the majority of the applications, TE is used in a bivariate fashion, where information transfer is quantified between all sourcetarget pairs. In a multivariate setting, however, such a bivariate analysis may infer spurious or redundant interactions, where multiple sources provide the same information about the target. Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.
