Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a lung disease causing hundred thousand of death each year worldwide and defined as a respiratory and airflow impairment majorly due to large and small airways dysfunctions. COPD could be considered as a syndrome that includes disease axes of variable pathological and clinical conditions. Despite recent advances, the comprehension of the molecular mechanisms responsible for COPD disease spectrum is far to be reached. Moreover, we should also consider continuous smoking exposure, which could lead to variability in the disease mechanisms and progression. Network-based multi-omics data integration can help to study the association between molecular determinants on diverse biomolecular layers in a disease context. In a previous study, we leveraged lung RNA-seq and DNA-methylation data of a COPD-control cohort to build a correlation-based integrated network (called coupled network), that helped to unveil genes involved in immune and inflammatory modulation of COPD. Therefore, in our previous study we highlighted the most important genes of the coupled network and inspected their single contribution to disease-related pathways. In this study we aim to overcome this limitation by performing a pathway activity analysis by considering the expression and DNA methylation profiles of coupled network genes. Moreover, we exploit this analysis to study the possible contribution of coupled network genes to the differential disease progression between current and former smokers patients. © 2024 IEEE.

Decision reducts and rules belong to forms used for the representation of knowledge learnt from input data while using a rough set approach in the exploration stage. As with any patterns that capture properties of data, the size is considered as the most important indicator of their quality, as a more general and concise description allows for improved understanding and simplified interpretation. The size of a reduct is given by its cardinality, and for a rule it is a number of included conditions, both referred to as lengths. These lengths undergo transformations along with data transformations, so such processing as discretisation leads to changed characteristics of existing patterns and through them also reducts and rules. The paper presents research with contributions in the observations focused on the influence of supervised and unsupervised discretisation on properties of attributes, induced decision reducts, and rules, offering a deeper insight into relations among them. © 2023 The Authors. The paper presents a description of the research methodology dedicated to a two-step discretisation process applied to the input numeric data, with combining the characteristics of selected supervised and unsupervised algorithms, which leads to extended processing of some attributes in train and test sets. The methodology was illustrated with the investigations carried out in the domain of stylometric analysis of texts, for two datasets prepared for the task of binary authorship attribution. The several variants of transformed input data obtained were subjected to exploration using two selected machine learning methods capable of inducing knowledge from both continuous and categorical forms, namely the PART and J48 classifiers. The results from the experiments indicate that, as can be expected, supervised transformations of data work well enough, however, they do not always return the best outcome. The two-step processing of some attributes shows sufficient promise to warrant a closer study, as opposed to always unconditionally relying only on supervised algorithms as outperforming all other approaches. © 2023 The Authors. A fuzzy system for setting the priority of IT project work has been developed, in which a preliminary analysis of the metrics of readiness, permission and complexity of tasks is carried out, which makes it possible to determine the priority of the project work. Based on this, the business analyst can effectively make decisions about the workload of the project team. The results of the work can be successfully applied to the effective management of the implementation of IT projects and the proactive management of project teams. © 2024 IEEE.

The main goal of the paper is to develop automatic control design methods for flexible aircraft. The motivation for the research is that such automatic control generation enables the inclusion of the control design algorithms into the multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) of aircraft design. In such an extended MDO framework, called co-design, the sizing, structural dynamics, aerodynamics and the controllers of the aircraft are optimized in one single step. This way control technologies can be included early-on in the preliminary design stage of aircraft design. Since the control design is model based, first a control oriented aeroservoelastic (ASE) model needs to be developed. The modeling is done via the bottomup modelling approach. The model generation also needs to be automatic due to parameter changes resulting from the MDO process. The research focuses on flexible aircraft, therefore, the control algorithms include baseline, manoeuvre load alleviation, gust load alleviation and flutter suppression controllers. All of these algorithms needs to be developed in such way that they can automatically executed in the MDO process. The overall MDO framework is implemented in the Remote Component Environment (RCE) and the aircraft investigated is the T-Flex demonstrator of the FLIPASED project. The paper presents the main concepts of the modeling and control synthesis, analysis for the above mentioned four controllers and the most important aspects of integrating such automatic control design methods into the RCE environment. © 2023, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Clustering algorithms are crucial in uncovering hidden patterns and structures within datasets. Among the density-based clustering algorithms, DBSCAN (Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) has gained considerable attention for its effectiveness in various applications. However, determining appropriate parameter values for this algorithm remains a challenging task. This paper presents a novel methodology for eps parameter estimation for an improved DBSCAN, namely SS-DBSCAN. The experimental results across nine datasets demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed method in accurately determining clusters with eps value from SS-DBSCAN algorithm. The clusters identified using estimated eps values by SS-DBSCAN align well with the inherent structure of the datasets, yielding better cluster results than the manually set parameters and other methods used for automatic estimations of the eps for DBSCAN. Our approach adapted well to the peculiarities of each dataset, whether dealing with different scales, dimensions, or densities;it proved the versatility and robustness across various datasets, thereby emphasizing its generalizability and potential for broader applications. © 2023 IEEE.

The electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem caused by power electronic switching devices and pulse width modulation (PWM) affects the normal operation of the motor drive system. In this paper, a random PWM based on unified modulation is proposed for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive system. The theoretical basis of unified modulation and the implementation scheme of random modulation are analyzed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed random PWM is verified by simulation. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, wide bandgap semiconductor devices such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) have been increasingly applied in electric drive systems, effectively enhancing system power density. However, the high-frequency and high-speed characteristics of SiC devices exacerbate electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues within the system. Additionally, the cables in electric drive systems exhibit significant antenna effects, radiating conducted EMI into the surrounding space, thereby affecting the normal operation of other sensitive equipment. Therefore, it is essential to research motor drive system topologies that can actively suppress EMI and predict radiated interference in motor drive systems. The topology of a four-module motor paired with parallel inverters can achieve active suppression of EMI at the source. This paper conducts a simulation-based prediction of radiated interference for a parallel inverter-driven four-module motor system. It analyzes the coupling mechanisms of common mode and differential mode radiated interference and validates the radiated interference from both DC and AC cables through simulations, predicting the impact on surrounding sensitive equipment in practical systems. © 2024 IEEE.
