During the COVID19 epidemic, people of all ages from all walks of life around the world have become inevitably familiar with and almost dependent on the digital tools of the age and the opportunities they offer. A change had to take place very quickly that was unprecedented. This process has also affected education. During the time of the reading lock-in, there was a proliferation of digital curricular content. The second time around, online education came to the fore, thanks to less or well-functioning online platforms, and has since become part of everyday teaching. What is the effectiveness and usefulness of sharing knowledge in this way? Is literacy still needed at all? Can online and hybrid (a controlled mix of face-to-face and online) education replace the well-established contact and face-to-face education? The study show that the respondents believe that online education has had an impact on literacy and that it is perceived to have a positive impact. The results indicate that online education has a positive impact on the literacy levels of students, as it facilitates knowledge acquisition and enhances digital literacy skills.

In the last three years, a new partner has emerged for teachers and educators in the field of education. The mushrooming of applications based on large language models has greatly shaped the educational development fields of the present era. The use of various AI applications has become commonplace among students and teachers alike. Many questions are being raised by researchers in this field. What does the rapid development of AI applications bring to the field of pedagogy? Should the products of such applications be compared with human performance? The form presented in this thesis seeks to answer similar questions. What is the impact of frequent use of these applications on the literacy level of individuals? In which areas do students tend to use these applications? The results indicate that half of the students believe their literacy levels will decrease with the mass emergence of AI applications, while 36% feel it will not change. However, 88 % of students have already dealt with AI-based applications, with 64 % using them several times or more, suggesting a high level of integration into their educational processes.

Consensus and cluster forming of multiagent systems in the face of jamming attacks along with reactive recovery actions by a defender are discussed. The attacker is capable to disable some of the edges of the network with the objective to divide the agents into a smaller size of clusters while, in response, the defender recovers some of the edges by increasing the transmission power. We consider repeated games where the resulting optimal strategies for the two players are derived in a rolling horizon fashion. The attacker and the defender possess different computational abilities to calculate their strategies. This aspect is represented by the non-uniform values of the horizon lengths and the game periods. Theoretical and simulation based results demonstrate the effects of the horizon lengths and the game periods on the agents’ states. © 2023, CC BY.

Decentralized optimization has become a standard paradigm for solving large-scale decision-making problems and training large machine learning models without centralizing data. However, this paradigm introduces new privacy and security risks, with malicious agents potentially able to infer private data or impair the model accuracy. Over the past decade, significant advancements have been made in developing secure decentralized optimization and learning frameworks and algorithms. This survey provides a comprehensive tutorial on these advancements. We begin with the fundamentals of decentralized optimization and learning, highlighting centralized aggregation and distributed consensus as key modules exposed to security risks in federated and distributed optimization, respectively. Next, we focus on privacy-preserving algorithms, detailing three cryptographic tools and their integration into decentralized optimization and learning systems. Additionally, we examine resilient algorithms, exploring the design and analysis of resilient aggregation and consensus protocols that support these systems. This paper explores the cubic-regularized Newton method within a federated learning framework while addressing two major concerns: privacy leakage and communication bottlenecks. We propose the Differentially Private Federated Cubic Regularized Newton (DP-FCRN) algorithm, which leverages second-order techniques to achieve lower iteration complexity than first-order methods. We incorporate noise perturbation during local computations to ensure privacy. Furthermore, we employ sparsification in uplink transmission, which not only reduces the communication costs but also amplifies the privacy guarantee. Specifically, this approach reduces the necessary noise intensity without compromising privacy protection. We analyze the convergence properties of our algorithm and establish the privacy guarantee. Finally, we validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm through experiments on a benchmark dataset. © 2024, CC BY.

The proposed hand gesture recognition (HGR) system is designed to enhance human-computer interaction (HCI) and human-robot interaction (HRI), which are crucial areas of research aimed at improving the way humans interact with computer or robot systems. With the growing need for intelligent computers and robots in a range of applications, including healthcare, manufacturing, and education, both HCI and HRI have gained significant importance. In this context, the HGR system plays a vital role by enabling natural and intuitive communication between humans and technology through hand gestures. The presented system uses a single camera and efficient image processing techniques that enable real-time gesture detection. Unlike other methods, our approach employs a basic video camera, which is widely available on most computers, eliminating the need for expensive and specialized hardware. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

This paper presents a novel observer-based approach to detect and isolate faulty sensors in nonlinear systems. The proposed sensor fault detection and isolation (s-FDI) method applies to a general class of nonlinear systems. Our focus is on s-FDI for two types of faults: complete failure and sensor degradation. The key aspect of this approach lies in the utilization of a neural network-based Kazantzis- Kravaris/Luenberger (KKL) observer. The neural network is trained to learn the dynamics of the observer, enabling accurate output predictions of the system. Sensor faults are detected by comparing the actual output measurements with the predicted values. If the difference surpasses a theoretical threshold, a sensor fault is detected. To identify and isolate which sensor is faulty, we compare the numerical difference of each sensor meassurement with an empirically derived threshold. We derive both theoretical and empirical thresholds for detection and isolation, respectively. Notably, the proposed approach is robust to measurement noise and system uncertainties. Its effectiveness is demonstrated through numerical simulations of sensor faults in a network of Kuramoto oscillators. © 2023, CC BY.

Diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) forecasts are critical for adopting solar photovoltaic technology. Yet, they can lack reliability given the limited and uncertain meteorological data available for desert areas. This research develops a new sine cosine dipper throated optimization (SCDTO) technique, targeting DHI prediction even given such data constraints. SCDTO uniquely hybridizes sine cosine metaheuristics, adept at exploration, with dipper throat optimization, providing focused exploitation. This hybridization aims to create a robust ensemble model capable of delivering reliable DHI predictions despite climatic uncertainty. The ensemble model, employing various input combinations, was rigorously evaluated across multiple meteorological stations. The SCDTO algorithm exhibited remarkable performance improvements, yielding substantial reductions exceeding 93% in root mean squared error and 98% in mean absolute error at key stations in Morocco, including Tan-Tan, Zagora, Erfoud, and Oujda. Comparative analyses against established optimization algorithms consistently underscored the superior predictive capabilities of SCDTO. Visualizations, including box plots and histograms, demonstrated SCDTO’s efficacy in minimizing prediction errors, particularly for Tan-Tan, Zagora, and Erfoud stations. Also, statistical validation through one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) further affirmed the significance of the proposed SCDTO method. Therefore, this hybrid metaheuristic optimization enables more accurate DHI predictions from limited meteorological data. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.
