When studying string vibrations, the linear wave equation is most often used. This does not take into account the dependence of the string tension force on the amplitude. For metals, even with a slight elongation, the tension force will increase significantly, which will affect the speed of propagation of transverse waves and the frequency of vibrations. The speed of transverse vibrations is limited by the tensile strength of the material. Thus, for high-strength silicon-chromium-manganese steel, the ratio of the speed of longitudinal waves to the maximum speed of transverse waves is approximately equal to 10. For other materials, this ratio is much larger, so we will assume that longitudinal deformations at each moment of time have time to be evenly distributed along the length of the string, because during one transverse vibration a large number of longitudinal vibrations occur.

Risk-Sensitive Reinforcement Learning with Exponential Criteria

While reinforcement learning has shown experimental success in a number of applications, it is known to be sensitive to noise and perturbations in the parameters of the system, leading to high variability in the total reward amongst different episodes on slightly different environments. To introduce robustness, as well as sample efficiency, risk-sensitive reinforcement learning methods are being thoroughly studied. In this work, we provide a definition of robust reinforcement learning policies and formulate a risk-sensitive reinforcement learning problem to approximate them, by solving an optimization problem with respect to a modified objective based on exponential criteria. In particular, we study a model-free risk-sensitive variation of the widely-used Monte Carlo Policy Gradient algorithm, and introduce a novel risk-sensitive online Actor-Critic algorithm based on solving a multiplicative Bellman equation using stochastic approximation updates. Analytical results suggest that the use of exponential criteria generalizes commonly used ad-hoc regularization approaches, improves sample efficiency, and introduces robustness with respect to perturbations in the model parameters and the environment. In this paper, we focus on an asynchronous distributed optimization problem. In our problem, each node is endowed with a convex local cost function, and is able to communicate with its neighbors over a directed communication network. Furthermore, we assume that the communication channels between nodes have limited bandwidth, and each node suffers from processing delays. We present a distributed algorithm which combines the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) strategy with a finite time quantized averaging algorithm. In our proposed algorithm, nodes exchange quantized valued messages and operate in an asynchronous fashion. More specifically, during every iteration of our algorithm each node (i) solves a local convex optimization problem (for the one of its primal variables), and (ii) utilizes a finite-time quantized averaging algorithm to obtain the value of the second primal variable (since the cost function for the second primal variable is not decomposable). We show that our algorithm converges to the optimal solution at a rate of O (1/ k) (where $k$ is the number of time steps) for the case where the local cost function of every node is convex and not-necessarily differentiable. Finally, we demonstrate the operational advantages of our algorithm against other algorithms from the literature.

Architectural Distortion (AD) is a common abnormality in digital mammograms, alongside masses and microcalcifications. Detecting AD in dense breast tissue is particularly challenging due to its heterogeneous asymmetries and subtle presentation. Factors such as location, size, shape, texture, and variability in patterns contribute to reduced sensitivity. To address these challenges, we propose a novel feature fusion-based Vision Transformer (ViT) attention network, combined with VGG-16, to improve accuracy and efficiency in AD detection. Our approach mitigates issues related to texture fixation, background boundaries, and deep neural network limitations, enhancing the robustness of AD classification in mammograms. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model achieves state-of-the-art performance, outperforming eight existing deep learning models. On the PINUM dataset, it attains 0.97 sensitivity, 0.92 F1-score, 0.93 precision, 0.94 specificity, and 0.96 accuracy. On the DDSM dataset, it records 0.93 sensitivity, 0.91 F1-score, 0.94 precision, 0.92 specificity, and 0.95 accuracy. These results highlight the potential of our method for computer-aided breast cancer diagnosis, particularly in low-resource settings where access to high-end imaging technology is limited. By enabling more accurate and timely AD detection, our approach could significantly improve breast cancer screening and early intervention worldwide. © 2013 IEEE.

Due to their flexibility, battery powered or energy-harvesting wireless networks are deployed in diverse applications. Securing data transmissions between wireless devices is of critical importance in order to avoid privacy-sensitive user data leakage. In this paper, we focus on the scenario where some nodes are curious (but not malicious) and try to identify the initial states of one (or more) other nodes, while some other nodes aim to preserve the privacy of their initial states from these curious nodes. We present a privacy-preserving finite transmission event-triggered quantized average consensus algorithm. Its operation is suitable for battery-powered or energy-harvesting wireless network since it guarantees (i) efficient (quantized) communication, and (ii) transmission ceasing (which allows preservation of available energy). Furthermore, we present topological conditions under which the proposed algorithm allows nodes to preserve their privacy. We conclude with a comparison of our algorithm against other algorithms in the existing literature.

Ease of calibration and high-accuracy task-space state-estimation purely based on onboard sensors is a key requirement for enabling easily deployable cable robots in real-world applications. In this work, we incorporate the onboard camera and kinematic sensors to drive a statistical fusion framework that presents a unified localization and calibration system which requires no initial values for the kinematic parameters. This is achieved by formulating a Monte-Carlo algorithm that initializes a factor-graph representation of the calibration and localization problem. With this, we are able to jointly identify both the kinematic parameters and the visual odometry scale alongside their corresponding uncertainties. We demonstrate the practical applicability of the framework using our state-estimation dataset recorded with the ARAS-CAM suspended cable driven parallel robot, and published as part of this manuscript.

The paper presents a reconfigurable fault-tolerant control strategy for a semi-active suspension using magnetorheological (MR) damper. The aim of the control reconfiguration is to handle the adverse behaviour of the MR damper due to oil leakage induced by the wear of the suspension component. The proposed method relies on the data driven model of the MR damper, using an estimation procedure to quantify the healthiness of the damper and to estimate the performance degradation due to the oil leakage. The reconfiguration control strategy is founded on the Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) framework, where a scheduling variable is defined to represent the healthiness level of the MR damper. By the scaling of the control action through the scheduling variable, the performance degradation of the MR damper can be compensated to match the behaviour of the healthy dampers. The proposed method is demonstrated through simulations, comparing the performance of the fault-tolerant LPV control to conventional semi-active control methods

In traditional control methods, Series Elastic Actuator (SEA) joint manipulators are limited by their hardware and can only perform simple tasks with low stiffness. To address this issue, we propose a stiffness adjustment control strategy for SEA manipulators based on Dynamic systems (DS) with good generalization performance. By enhancing the generalization capability of DS in complex tasks and combining posture control, the SEA manipulators can autonomously adjust control gains and postures according to task requirements to achieve higher stiffness at the end-effector. Experimental results involving the activation of air switches with different stiffness levels and installation angles have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed method. The results indicate that compared to traditional methods of adjusting the control gain and retraining DS for similar tasks, our approach exhibits superior generalization performance while maintaining end-effector stiffness during interactions.

In this paper, we propose a novel infrastructure-dependent ramp-metering control for the recently proposed METANET with service station (METANET-s) model, i.e., a second-order macroscopic traffic model that, compared to the classical METANET, incorporates the dynamics of service stations on highways. We study the effect of a ramp-metering control scheme on a highway stretch with a service station and show that it is capable of actively regulate internal traffic demand attempting to exit the service station via its on-ramp, on top of contributing to decrease the traffic congestion on the mainstream. In fact, the proposed control scheme effectively prevents the backlog of vehicles attempting to merge back onto the mainstream. This dynamic control mechanism is further endowed by a route guidance control strategy increasing the share of vehicles stopping at the service station during main-stream congestion periods, e.g. via incentives. The combined effect of our control schemes allows to take full advantage of the presence of service stations, reducing the overall traffic congestion. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategies.

Minimal realizations of input-output behaviors by LPV state-space representations with affine dependency

The paper makes the first steps towards a behavioral theory of LPV state-space representations with an affine dependency on scheduling, by characterizing minimality of such state-space representations. It is shown that minimality is equivalent to observability, and that minimal realizations of the same behavior are isomorphic. Finally, we establish a formal relationship between minimality of LPV state-space representations with an affine dependence on scheduling and minimality of LPV state-space representations with a dynamic and meromorphic dependence on scheduling. © 2023, CC BY.
