A composite backstepping integral sliding mode controller (BISMC) is proposed in this work for a DC-DC boost converter feeding a constant power load (CPL) in a simple DC distribution system. Here, the main objective is to ensure the large-signal stability with wide variations in operating regions. The proposed BISMC is designed based on the feedback linearized model of the DC-DC boost converter with a CPL where the average state-space model is exactly linearized. The use of exact feedback linearization overcomes the non-minimum phase problem of a DC-DC boost converter due to the presence of the CPL that exhibits negative impedance characteristics. The control law is obtained using the combination of backstepping and integral sliding mode control schemes where both approaches ensure the faster convergence of errors for all states and the integral action on the sliding surface is designed in such a fashion that will ensure the constant frequency operation of the power converter feeding the CPL while eliminating the variable frequency associated problem of the existing controllers. In addition, the stability of the whole system is analyzed through the Lyapunov stability theory. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the performance of the designed composite nonlinear controller whose performance is also compared with a double-loop proportional integral (PI) controller to verify the superiority of the designed controller. © 2021 IEEE.

In this paper, we focus on an asynchronous distributed optimization problem. In our problem, each node is endowed with a convex local cost function, and is able to communicate with its neighbors over a directed communication network. Furthermore, we assume that the communication channels between nodes have limited bandwidth, and each node suffers from processing delays. We present a distributed algorithm which combines the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) strategy with a finite time quantized averaging algorithm. In our proposed algorithm, nodes exchange quantized valued messages and operate in an asynchronous fashion. More specifically, during every iteration of our algorithm each node (i) solves a local convex optimization problem (for the one of its primal variables), and (ii) utilizes a finite-time quantized averaging algorithm to obtain the value of the second primal variable (since the cost function for the second primal variable is not decomposable). We show that our algorithm converges to the optimal solution at a rate of O(1/k) (where k is the number of time steps) for the case where the local cost function of every node is convex and not-necessarily differentiable. Finally, we demonstrate the operational advantages of our algorithm against other algorithms from the literature. © 2023, CC BY.

Learning to control Linear systems can be Hard

In this paper, we study the statistical difficulty of learning to control linear systems. We focus on two standard benchmarks, the sample complexity of stabilization, and the regret of the online learning of the Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR). Prior results state that the statistical difficulty for both benchmarks scales polynomially with the system state dimension up to system-theoretic quantities. However, this does not reveal the whole picture. By utilizing minimax lower bounds for both benchmarks, we prove that there exist non-trivial classes of systems for which learning complexity scales dramatically, i.e. exponentially, with the system dimension. This situation arises in the case of underactuated systems, i.e. systems with fewer inputs than states. Such systems are structurally difficult to control and their system theoretic quantities can scale exponentially with the system dimension dominating learning complexity. Under some additional structural assumptions (bounding systems away from uncontrollability), we provide qualitatively matching upper bounds. We prove that learning complexity can be at most exponential with the controllability index of the system, that is the degree of underactuation. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Sensor network localization (SNL) problems require determining the physical coordinates of all sensors in a network. This process relies on the global coordinates of anchors and the available measurements between non-anchor and anchor nodes. Attributed to the intrinsic non-convexity, obtaining a globally optimal solution to SNL is challenging, as well as implementing corresponding algorithms. In this paper, we formulate a non-convex multi-player potential game for a generic SNL problem to investigate the identification condition of the global Nash equilibrium (NE) therein, where the global NE represents the global solution of SNL. We employ canonical duality theory to transform the non-convex game into a complementary dual problem. Then we develop a conjugation-based algorithm to compute the stationary points of the complementary dual problem. On this basis, we show an identification condition of the global NE: the stationary point of the proposed algorithm satisfies a duality relation. This paper considers the distributed bandit convex optimization problem with time-varying inequality constraints over a network of agents, where the goal is to minimize network regret and cumulative constraint violation. Existing distributed online algorithms require that each agent broadcasts its decision to its neighbors at each iteration. To better utilize the limited communication resources, we propose a distributed event-triggered online primal-dual algorithm with two-point bandit feedback. Under several classes of appropriately chosen decreasing parameter sequences and non-increasing event-triggered threshold sequences, we establish dynamic network regret and network cumulative constraint violation bounds. These bounds are comparable to the results achieved by distributed event-triggered online algorithms with full-information feedback. In this work, we propose a data-driven approach for the stability analysis of discrete-time homogeneous nonlinear systems with unknown models. The proposed framework is based on constructing Lyapunov functions via a set of data, collected from trajectories of unknown systems, while providing an a-priori guaranteed confidence on the stability of the system. In our data-driven setting, we first cast the original stability problem as a robust optimization program (ROP). Since unknown models appear in the constraint of the proposed ROP, we collect a finite number of data from trajectories of unknown systems and provide two variants of scenario optimization program (SOP) associated to the original ROP. We discuss that the proposed ROP, and its corresponding SOPs, are not convex due to having a bilinearity between decision variables. We also show that while one of the proposed SOPs is more efficient in terms of computational complexity, the other one provides Lyapunov functions with a much better performance for the original ROP. We then establish a probabilistic closeness between the optimal value of (non-convex) SOP and that of ROP, and subsequently, formally provide the stability guarantee for unknown systems with a guaranteed confidence level. We illustrate the efficacy of our proposed results by applying them to two physical case studies with unknown dynamics including (i) a DC motor and (ii) a (homogeneous) nonlinear jet engine compressor. We collect data from trajectories of unknown systems and verify their global asymptotic stability (GAS) with desirable confidence levels.

In today’s digital age, fake news has become a major problem that has serious consequences, ranging from social unrest to political upheaval. To address this issue, new methods for detecting and mitigating fake news are required. In this work, we propose to incorporate contextual and network-aware features into the detection process. This involves analyzing not only the content of a news article but also the context in which it was shared and the network of users who shared it, i.e., the information diffusion. Thus, we propose GETAE, Graph Information Enhanced Deep Neural Network Ensemble ArchitecturE for Fake News Detection, a novel ensemble architecture that uses textual content together with the social interactions to improve fake news detection. GETAE contains two Branches: the Text Branch and the Propagation Branch. The Text Branch uses Word and Transformer Embeddings and a Deep Neural Network based on feed-forward and bidirectional Recurrent Neural Networks ([Bi]RNN) for learning novel contextual features and creating a novel Text Content Embedding. The Propagation Branch considers the information propagation within the graph network and proposes a Deep Learning architecture that employs Node Embeddings to create novel Propagation Embedding. GETAE Ensemble combines the two novel embeddings, i.e., Text Content Embedding and Propagation Embedding, to create a novel Propagation-Enhanced Content Embedding which is afterward used for classification. The experimental results obtained on two real-world publicly available datasets, i.e., Twitter15 and Twitter16, prove that using this approach improves fake news detection and outperforms state-of-the-art models. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

This paper proposes an observer-based formation tracking control approach for multi-vehicle systems with second-order motion dynamics, assuming that vehicles’ relative or global position and velocity measurements are unavailable. It is assumed that all vehicles are equipped with sensors capable of sensing the bearings relative to neighboring vehicles and only one leader vehicle has access to its global position. Each vehicle estimates its absolute position and velocity using relative bearing measurements and the estimates of neighboring vehicles received over a communication network. A distributed observer-based controller is designed, relying only on bearing and acceleration measurements. This work further explores the concept of the Bearing Persistently Exciting (BPE) formation by proposing new algorithms for bearing-based localization and state estimation of second-order systems in centralized and decentralized manners. It also examines conditions on the desired formation to guarantee the exponential stability of distributed observer-based formation tracking controllers. In support of our theoretical results, some simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed observers as well as the observer-based tracking controllers.

Artificial intelligence systems are usually implemented either using machine learning or expert systems. Machine learning methods are usually more accurate and applicable to a broader range of applications. Expert systems, on the other hand, require much less data for training and generate more comprehensible results. These characteristics are typically desired in the fields of surgery and medicine because there isn't much data available. In order to give a machine's decisions a deeper level of semantics, it is also advantageous to incorporate a doctor's expertise into it. Furthermore, it is safer to understand the reasoning behind a machine's choices. In this paper, a Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) based expert system is suggested for the task of surgical training skill assessment. An interval-based probabilistic feature analysis was applied to the data to assign values to the mass functions. Zhang's rule of combination was applied to handle the conflicting evidence in the prediction phase. The performance of the proposed method was compared to another DST classifier, SVM, and XGBoost. Our method outperforms SVM and other DST classifiers, but it is not as precise as XGBoost. By reducing the size of the dataset, the added benefit of using an expert system as opposed to a machine learning method was explored further. The performance of the suggested method is not adversely affected by the size of the dataset, whereas the XGBoost classifier is.
