Patients' non-adherence is a common problem that significantly reduces the effectiveness of treatments and increases mortality and healthcare costs. Forgetfulness is reported as a usual barrier to adherence. Electronic reminder systems consist an increasingly used type of intervention, which assists patients that are facing this problem. Important requirements regarding the design of such systems are multimodality, personalization and easy integration into the patient's daily life. The goal of this work is to present a multimodal electronic reminder system that supports the use of smart devices and utilizes the recently introduced Pebble smartwatch. The system employs cloud technology and also allows for other types of users with a supportive role in the patient's health care, such as the patient's doctor and pharmacist. Patient compliance is measured automatically with the method of self-reporting. The paper includes a brief evaluation of the user interface and some future research directions.

FPGA based unified architecture for public key and private key cryptosystems

Recently, security in embedded system arises attentions because of modern electronic devices need cau- tiously either exchange or communicate with the sensitive data. Although security is classical research topic in world- wide communication, the researchers still face the problems of how to deal with these resource constraint devices and en- hance the features of assurance and certification. Therefore, some computations of cryptographic algorithms are built on hardware platforms, such as field program gate arrays （FPGAs）. The commonly used cryptographic algorithms for digital signature algorithm （DSA） are rivest-shamir-adleman （RSA） and elliptic curve cryptosystems （ECC） which based on the presumed difficulty of factoring large integers and the algebraic structure of elliptic curves over finite fields. Usu- ally, RSA is computed over GF（p）, and ECC is computed over GF（p） or GF（2P）. Moreover, embedded applications need advance encryption standard （AES） algorithms to pro- cess encryption and decryption procedures. In order to reuse the hardware resources and meet the trade-off between area and performance, we proposed a new triple functional arith- metic unit for computing high radix RSA and ECC operations over GF（p） and GF（2P）, which also can be extended to support AES operations. A new high radix signed digital （SD） adder has been proposed to eliminate the carry propagations over GF（p）. The proposed unified design took up 28.7% less hardware resources than implementing RSA, ECC, and AES individually, and the experimental results show that our proposed architecture can achieve 141.8 MHz using approxi- mately 5.5k CLBs on Virtex-5 FPGA.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Content centric networking (CCN) is a new promising network architecture, which can save energy consumption and achieve the green communication due to less transport energy by effectively reducing the distances to content and eliminating duplicated transmissions. In CCN, one of the most important issues is how to cache the content chunks in different network nodes to optimize the network performance. Therefore, the problem of content caching in green CCN is studied in this paper to minimize the total network traffic. We first model the content caching problem as an integer linear programming problem. Then, using the recent advances in Chemical Reaction Optimization (CRO), we propose a CRO-based caching algorithm that can significantly decrease the total network traffic. CRO algorithm is a population-based metaheuristic algorithm, mimicking the process of chemical reactions, which has low computation complexity and is easy to be implemented in practical networks. Finally, extensive simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. © 2013 IEEE.

This paper presents a novel iterative receiver strategy incorporating widely linear filtering for uplink Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) multiuser multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed iterative receiver scheme achieves better performance without the loss of spectrum efficiency compared to the conventional iterative receivers;The superiority of the investigated scheduler coupled with the innovative iterative receiver scheme over conventional solutions is verified by both simulation and analytical results. © VDE Verlag GMBH.

An inductively coupled feed novel technique is proposed to enhance the performance of RFID tag antennas. The applied feeding concept comprises of two opposing symmetrical U-shaped structures to feed a radiating body. It is a simple alternative to effectively match between the antenna impedance with the chip impedance from the flexible augmentation of equivalent inductance to the radiating body. The proposed feeding method offers better expectation of performance among antenna size, impedance, and gain at the size of 50 × 70 × 1.6 mm3. The peak gain of the proposed tag antenna is 2.5 dBi at its operating frequency, which is higher among conventional tag antennas. Measured results indicate that this tag antenna has a good impedance matching characteristic at 904-937 MHz (power reflection coefficient better than -3 dB). The comparison between the simulation and measurement results verified the proposed technique capability to improve overall performance of the tag antennas. © 2013 IEEE.

We propose a Mutual Information (MI) based spatial frequency domain packet scheduling algorithm for uplink Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) multiuser multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) systems in this paper. The proposed scheduler is designed particularly for signal constellation constrained MIMO systems. The superiority of the investigated scheduler coupled with the innovative iterative receiver scheme over conventional solutions is verified by both simulation and analytical results. © VDE Verlag GMBH.

A checkerboard pattern formed by the intersection of attracting and repelling Lagrangian coherent structures has been observed in several geophysical vortex flows. A mechanism for tlie formation of such checkerboard patterns is proposed and investigated in the context of two simple analytical flows. In these flows, hyperbolic stretching in two dimensions is enhanced by a huge, sheared velocity in the third dimension. Perturbations to the system then create localized regions of higher stretching in the flow, leading to the checkerboard pattern seen in the resulting LCS. This same pattern is shown in two geophysical flows, a warm-core ring shed from the Loop Current in the Gulf of Mexico and a simulation of Hurricane Rita. The checkerboard pattern appeals in the boundary layers of these flows due to the influence of friction and the corresponding separation of the flow from the ocean-atmosphere interface. © 2013 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Anomaly detection is indispensable for satisfying security services in mobile ad hoc network (MANET) applications. Often, however, a highly secure mechanism consumes a large amount of network resources, resulting in network performance degradation. To shift intrusion detection from existing security-centric design approaches to network performance centric design schemes, this paper presents a framework for designing an energy-aware and self-adaptive anomaly detection scheme for resource constrained MANETs. The scheme uses network tomography, a new technique for studying internal link performance based solely on end-to-end measurements. With the support of a module comprising a novel spatial-time model to identify the MANET topology, an energy-aware algorithm to sponsor system service, a method based on the expectation maximum to infer delay distribution, and a Self-organizing Map (SOM) neural network solution to profile link activity, the proposed system is capable of detecting link anomalies and localizing malicious nodes. Consequently, the proposed scheme offers a trade-off between overall network security and network performance, without causing any heavy network overload. Moreover, it provides an additional approach to monitor the spatial-time behavior of MANETs, including network topology, link performance and network security. The effectiveness of the proposed schemes is verified through extensive experiments. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
