A five-dimensional (5D) controlled two-stage Colpitts oscillator is introduced and analyzed. This new electronic oscillator is constructed by considering the well-known two-stage Colpitts oscillator with two further elements (coupled inductors and variable resistor). In contrast to current approaches based on piecewise linear (PWL) model, we propose a smooth mathematical model (with exponential nonlinearity) to investigate the dynamics of the oscillator. Several issues, such as the basic dynamical behaviour, bifurcation diagrams, Lyapunov exponents, and frequency spectra of the oscillator, are investigated theoretically and numerically by varying a single control resistor. It is found that the oscillator moves from the state of fixed point motion to chaos via the usual paths of period-doubling and interior crisis routes as the single control resistor is monitored. Furthermore, an experimental study of controlled Colpitts oscillator is carried out. An appropriate electronic circuit is proposed for the investigations of the complex dynamics behaviour of the system. A very good qualitative agreement is obtained between the theoretical/numerical and experimental results.

As the successor to the 3G standard, 4G provides much higher data rates to address cellular users' ever-increasing demands for high-speed multimedia communications. This paper analyzes the cellular operators' timing of network upgrades and models that users can switch operators and services. Being the first to upgrade 3G to 4G service, an operator increases his market share but takes more risk or upgrade cost because 4G technology matures over time. This paper first studies a 4G monopoly market with one dominant operator and some small operators, where the monopolist decides his upgrade time by trading off increased market share and upgrade cost. The paper also considers a 4G competition market and develops a game theoretic model for studying operators' interactions. The analysis shows that operators select different upgrade times to avoid severe competition. One operator takes the lead to upgrade, using the benefit of a larger market share to compensate for the larger cost of an early upgrade. This result matches well with many industry observations of asymmetric 4G upgrades. The paper further shows that the availability of 4G upgrade may decrease both operators' profits due to increased competition. Perhaps surprisingly, the profits can increase with the upgrade cost.

Software product lines, usually described using feature models, have proven to be a feasible solution to develop mobile and context-aware applications. These applications use con- text information to provide services and data for their users from anywhere and at any time. However, building feature models for mobile and context-aware software product lines demands advanced skills of software engineers, since it comprises system and context information. Moreover, to guarantee a correct application execution, these models must be thoroughly specified, composed and verified to check whether some composition and adaptation rules are violated. Although this is an important task, there is a lack of formalization of such rules, which makes it difficult to use those rules for feature models verification. In this paper, we propose an approach to prevent defects in context-aware feature models and in their product reconfiguration based on formal methods. To validate our work, we developed a prototype to check the correctness of context-aware feature models. Copyright 2012 ACM.

According to tremendous demands of high spatial resolution images, the brilliant research efforts in the area of image resolution enhancement algorithms have been raised hence the simple and fast computational resolution enhancement algorithms have been very attracted in the modern digital devices such as smart phone, CCTV, digital camera, etc. Due to its performance and fast computational time, this paper empirically experimental investigates the performance of the single image super resolve reconstruction based on the high-frequency image prediction for up to 14 standard test images. This paper has three main contributions. The first contribution is an experimental comprehensive study of an optimal interpolation technique selection and an optimal number of gradient directions in single image super resolve reconstruction based on the high-frequency image prediction under a noiseless environment. Moreover, the study of optimal M0 parameter selection is computationally explored for this environment. The second contribution is a study of an experimental performance of the reconstruction under several blurred environments at different blurred variance. Moreover, the study of optimal M0 parameter selection is computationally analyzed for this blurred environment. Finally, the last contribution is a study of an experimental performance of the reconstruction under several noisy environments at different noise power levels and the study of the optimal M0 parameter selection is analyzed.

We present a novel algorithm for discriminating pornographic and assorted benign images, each categorized into semantic subclasses. The algorithm exploits connectedness and coherence properties in skin image regions in order to capture alarming Regions of Interest (ROIs). The technique to identify ROIs in an image employs a region-splitting scheme, in which the image plane is recursively partitioned into quadrants. Splitting is achieved by considering both the accumulation of skin pixels and texture coherence. This processing step is proven to significantly boost the accuracy and reduction of running time demands, even in the presence of sparse noise due to errors attributed to skin segmentation. For detected ROIs, we extract 15 rough color and spatial features computed from the pixels residing in the ROI. A novel classification scheme based on a tree-structured ensemble of strong Random Forest classifiers is also proposed. The method achieves competitive performance both in terms of response time and accuracy when compared to the state-of-the-art. Copyright 2012 ACM.

Shutting down a link for the purposes of a scheduled routine maintenance does cause the forwarding path to change. If these changes are not done in a required order will cause not only transient micro loops but also an overload in some links. Currently, some ISP operators use a graceful link shutdown procedure by first setting up the Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) link metric to MAX_METRIC -1 and then shutdown the link. In this paper, we present a Pythagorean Triple Metric Sequence as a method to use to shutdown a link during such network operations. Conducting a link shutdown of any desired link for maintenance purpose is a very delicate duty that requires extreme care to prevent transient loops during such topological changes. We thus wish to demonstrate that there exists a Pythagorean Triple Metric Sequence for any given link that can be used to shutdown a link during the routine maintenance by ISPs.

Sufficient computing resources available at future generation routers in the access/aggregation networks can be pooled to form a cloud at edge, which we call Access/Aggregation network Cloud (or ANC). An ANC can be used to handle some of the information processing conventionally done inside the enterprise networks. ANC computing can also result in a much less delay and more flexibility than if such information processing is done centrally in a data center in the core. In this paper, we formulate two representative optimization problems related to Flow Inspection Router Assignment (FIRA) in ANCs. Their objectives are to minimize the (weighted) number of flows that still need to be inspected inside the enterprise network when only some flows can be assigned to the ANC due to the additional flow inspection delay in the ANC, and when all the flows can be assigned to the ANC, to minimize the additional flow inspection delay, respectively. We prove the NP-hardness of these two new problems, study their performance bounds and propose efficient heuristics. We further extend the formulation and solution to support multicast flows. Simulation shows that our heuristic algorithms can perform close to their performance bounds, implying their near optimality and the tightness of the bounds. In addition, simulation also demonstrates how inspection computing resources can be reduced for multicast flows. © 2012 IEEE.

Despite its popularity, the conventional Vivaldi antenna has long suffered from some design problems, such as tilted beam, low or inconsistent directivity and gain, complicated design and fabrication methods, and limited size reduction. These setbacks make its progress lag on the fast track of technological demand. Thus, the antenna overall performance is anticipated to improve by incorporating negative index metamaterial (NIM) into the design method, plus, it is also tunable. In this study, the design uses linearly-tapered shape-loading structure, as its projected performance crucially depends on the space in between the antenna arms, a prerequisite to further boost its performance when combined with NIM technology. A unique slitting approach synchronizes the integration between the Vivaldi antenna and NIM where a single layer NIM piece is simply snugged into the slit perpendicular to the middle antenna substrate. The major improvement in the spotlight is the capability of NIM to focus the entire beam so that it can radiate to the targeted direction. The measurement results are similar to the simulations in terms of high gain, where the gain and directivity of the antenna are increased up to 4 dB. The contrast of overall performance between the plain modified Vivaldi antenna and the ones with NIM evidently asserts the expected contribution of snug and boost method applied and attests its significant potentials for a broad range of ultra-wideband applications.
