Multicast, hierarchical and fast handover in mobile IPv6 wireless network: A test-bed experience

Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) allows mobile devices to be always addressed by its home address. This paper describes a micro-mobility based test-bed development with enhanced MIPv6 features including multicast function and hierarchical design. The test-bed is hardware and software based comprising of five Personal computers (PCs) and one laptop. The laptop represents the Mobile Node (MN) while the functions of the PCs are as follows;two as Access Points (AP), one as Home Agent (HA), and the other two as foreign Multicast Router (MR) and Correspondent Node (CN) respectively. This test-bed is used to analyze handover delay, packet delay, packet loss, throughput and overall throughput in real wireless environment for conventional handover and enhanced MIPv6 handover scenarios. The results show the enhanced handover scheme reduces handover delay 94.32% (4.35s-0.2s), packet delay by 84.43% (0.7s-0.109 s), packet loss from 44 to 0 packet while the throughput and overall throughput were increased by approximately 117.34% and 124.3% respectively over the conventional system. Finally, it can be concluded that the proposed scheme gives advantages of higher throughput, zero packet loss and lower delays and can significantly improve micro-mobility performance of 3G, 4G and beyond mobile communication systems.

With the increasing application of distributed energy resources and information technologies in the electricity infrastructure, innovative possibilities for incorporating the demand side more actively in power system operation are enabled. At the residential level energy costs could be reduced with intelligent price-based control concepts (demand response). A promising, controllable, residential distributed generation technology is micro cogeneration (micro-CHP). Micro-CHP is an energy efficient technology that simultaneously provides heat and electricity to households during operation. This paper presents a detailed model of a household using a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) micro-CHP system in conjunction with heat storage options to fulfil its heat and part of its electricity demand. Furthermore, a decentralised controller based on a model predictive control (MPC) strategy is proposed. MPC can take benefit of future knowledge on prizes and energy demands and can therefore lead to better system performance. In simulations the performance of the MPC-controlled PEMFC system is illustrated under different conditions regarding energy pricing, domestic energy demand, and system configuration.

Functional improvements to mobile terminals have made possible the spread of multimedia information delivery services. Especially for sports, a service that extracts important scenes and reports them to users has become popular. We take the approach that situational changes in a game's progress can be presented as state transitions, and devise an important scene analysis model based on Result Importance (RI), which represents each situation's actual importance, and Situation Importance (SI), which shows the degree of a chance at the situation. With our model, significant scenes are extracted dynamically. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is very promising. Copyright © 2009 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Energy-efficient (green) supercomputing has evolved to improve system reliability and provide better availability and productivity. Green Destiny supercomputing system is a Linux-based cluster that uses low-power components whose performance could be optimized for supercomputing. Low-power supercomputing focuses on energy efficiency at system integration time, selects low-power chips as the building blocks for power reduction and system reliability, and achieves better performance by scaling up to a larger number of processors. Researchers have implemented various power-aware software prototypes for commodity supercomputing starting with cluster of high-performance, high-power processors that support mechanism called dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). Various approaches for parallel supercomputing nodes are studied by aiming execution phases that are not on the critical execution path.

It is becoming increasingly important to be able to adapt an application's behavior at run time in response to changing requirements and environmental conditions. Adaptive programs are typically difficult to specify, design, and verify. A variety of conditions may trigger an adaptation, each of which may involve different types of adaptation mechanisms. In many cases, adaptive systems are concurrent, thus further exacerbating the complexity. Furthermore, it is important that adaptations do not put the system into an inconsistent state during or after adaptation. This paper presents an iterative approach to modeling and analyzing UML behavioral design models of adaptive systems, where the UML state diagrams are automatically translated into Promela code for analysis with the Spin model checker. The adaptive models are analyzed for adherence to both system invariants and properties that should hold during adaptation. We demonstrate this approach on applications for the mobile computing domain where we verify the design models against formally-specified properties. © 2008 IEEE.

Authenticating a user online, without compromising the user comfort is an important issue. The most popular approach to authenticate a user online is Password-based authentication. Studies show that, users (always) choose very simple passwords which are often easy to guess. On the contrary, randomly generated strings are difficult to remember, especially if the user is having many passwords. In this paper we present a dynamic password scheme based on patterns, called Pass Pattern System (PPS), which works using the existing infrastructure. PPS is an Adaptive Authentication System, where the strength of the system can be changed depending on the need of the application without compromising the user comfort. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2008.

A novel centralised clustering algorithm for energy-efficient Wireless Sensor networks

Wireless Sensor networks (WSNs) consist of a large number of low-power nodes sensing data from the environment. The sensor nodes are equipped with small and often irreplaceable batteries with limited power capacity. One of the areas of sensor networking that has attracted a lot of attention recently is the prolonging of the life span of sensor networks by exploiting energy-efficient routing schemes. We propose a novel energyefficient centralised clustering algorithm for WSN. The proposed algorithm generates a set of possible clustering alternatives from which it selects the optimal clustering. We also present a performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm using two performance metrics Max-min and Max-sum. We found that Max-sum yields superior performance. In addition, our proposed algorithm improves the system lifetime performance over Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy-C by almost 15%. We also compare performance results obtained with the chosen metric (Max-sum) with those obtained using other strategies (such as random and configuration 0). The Max-sum metric outperforms the random and configuration 0 strategies by almost 8.5 and 11%, respectively, for system lifetime. Moreover, we found that the total amount of data collected using the Max-sum metric is at least 9% higher than with random and configuration 0 strategies. In this paper, a new algorithm, intelligent agent antnet based routing algorithm (IANRA) is proposed to enhance load balancing strategy in wireless networks (WNs). IANRA is based on ants behaviour with some important factors such as: the specific self-organizing behaviour of ant colonies, the shortest path discovery and the related framework of ant colony optimization (ACO). The main focus in IANRA is to find optimum and near optimum route by means of genetic algorithm (GA) using breeding capability of ants. Here, ants can produce a number of generations with the target to discover an optimized route. Hence IANRA is able to prevent of the difficulties which exist in existing routing algorithms, such as ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV), AntNet etc. The obtained results show that the efficiency of IANRA algorithm is better than AODV and AntNet or any other related algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithm (IANRA) is able to reduce the end-to-end delay and increase the packet delivery ratio significantly.
