This paper explores three different methods, employed separately and in combination, to improve the quality of video delivery on wireless local area networks. The approaches are: leader-driven multicast (LDM), monitoring MAC layer unicast (re)transmissions by other receivers; application-level forward error correction (FEC) using block erasure codes; negative feedback from selected receivers in the form of extra parity requests (EPR). The performance of these three methods is evaluated using both experiments on a mobile computing testbed and simulation. The results indicate that, while LDM is helpful in improving the raw packet reception rate, the combination of FEC and EPR is most effective in improving the frame delivery rate.

Software on wearable computers must adapt to dynamic environmental conditions, such as changes in packet loss behavior on wireless communication channels. This paper investigates the use of programming language constructs to realize adaptive behavior. A prototype language, Adaptive Java, was used to construct MetaSocket components, whose composition and behavior can be adapted to changing conditions during execution. MetaSockets were then integrated into Pavilion, a web-based collaboration framework, and experiments were conducted on a mobile computing testbed containing Xybernaut MA-V wearable computer systems. Performance results demonstrate the utility of MetaSockets in reducing file transfer time and enhancing the quality of interactive audio streams.

In software engineering, design patterns propose solution skeletons for common design problems. The solution skeleton is described in such a way that the design can be used for other projects, where each application tailors the design to specific project constraints. This paper describes research into investigating how a similar approach to reuse can be applied to requirements specifications, which we term requirements patterns. Specifically, the paper explores how object-oriented modeling notations, such as the Unified Modeling Language (UML), can be used to represent common requirements patterns. Structural and behavioral information are captured as part of a requirements pattern. In order to maximise reuse, we focus on requirements patterns for embedded systems. This paper also describes case studies that illustrate how we have applied these general patterns to multiple embedded systems applications from the automotive industry.

Many middleware platforms use computational reflection to support adaptive functionality. Most approaches intertwine the activity of observing behavior (introspection) with the activity of changing behavior (intercession). This paper explores the use of language constructs to separate these parts of reflective functionality. This separation and "packaging" of reflective primitives is intended to facilitate the design of correct and consistent adaptive middleware. A prototype language, called Adaptive Java, is described in which this functionality is realized through extensions to the Java programming language. A case study is described in which "metamorphic" socket components are created from regular socket classes and used to realize adaptive behavior on wireless network connections.

In this paper we introduce power control as a solution to the multiple access problem in contention-based wireless ad-hoc networks. The motivation for this study is two fold, limiting multi-user interference to increase single-hop throughput, and reducing power consumption to increase battery life. We focus on next neighbor transmissions where nodes are required to send information packets to their respective receivers subject to a constraint on the signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio. The multiple access problem is solved via two alternating phases, namely scheduling and power control. The scheduling algorithm is essential to coordinate the transmissions of independent users in order to eliminate strong interference (e.g. self-interference) that can not be overcome by power control. On the other hand, power control is executed in a distributed fashion to determine the admissible power vector, if one exists, that can be used by the scheduled users to satisfy their single-hop transmission requirements. This is done for two types of networks, namely TDMA and TDMA/CDMA wireless ad-hoc networks.

In this paper, we have analyzed the convolutional coded error performance of a 2D-RAKE receiver, in combination with transmit diversity on the downlink of a WCDMA system. The analyses assume correlated fading between receive antenna array elements, and an arbitrary number of independent but nonidentical resolvable multipaths combined by the RAKE receiver in the general Nakagami-m fading channel framework. The closed form expression of pairwise error probability is given in the simple form of a single finite limit integral, with the integrand being an elementary function of array configuration parameters, spatial correlation and operating environment factors. It is shown that the combination of coding and spatial-path combining lead to dramatic performance improvement in various fading environments.

This paper concerns with the minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) detection of synchronous multicarrier CDMA systems. Maximal-ratio combining (MRC) MMSE detection schemes are proposed for the multicarrier CDMA systems. In the proposed MRC MMSE receiver, the MMSE detection is first performed separately for each carrier, and then the outputs of each MMSE detector are combined in such a way that the resulting signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is maximized. The performance of the considered MRC MMSE schemes is compared with the conventional MMSE receivers of both jointly and separately designed MMSE filters. It is found that when the system is lightly loaded, the MRC MMSE detection scheme performs comparably to the jointly optimized MMSE detection in the presence of slow frequency-nonselective independent Rayleigh fading for each carrier.

We develop receivers for transmission with space-time block codes (STBCs) over fading intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. The focus lies on Alamouti's STBC, but the results may be generalized to related codes. It turns out that a straightforward combination of conventional equalizers and a space-time block decoder is only possible if at least as many receive antennas as transmit antennas are employed, but not for the practically interesting case of pure transmit diversity. This restriction is circumvented by our approach. Equalizers with widely linear (WL) processing are designed, exploiting the structure of Alamouti's STBC, which is shown to produce an improper (rotationally variant) transmit signal. The presented receivers are especially well suited for high-level modulated signals, which are used in third-generation time-division multiple access (TDMA) mobile communications standards such as EDGE (enhanced data rates for GSM evolution). In contrast to block-based STBCs which have recently been proposed for ISI channels, our approach of combining a symbol-based STBC and equalization can be easily accommodated to channels with time-variant behaviour inside a transmission burst. Furthermore, for our scheme, the present burst structure of the EDGE system can be retained.

This paper describes an experimental study in the use of a composable proxy framework to improve the quality of interactive audio streams delivered to mobile hosts. Two forward error correction (FEC) proxylets are developed, one using block erasure codes, and the other using the GSM 06.10 encoding algorithm. Separately, each type of FEC improves the ability of the audio stream to tolerate errors in a wireless LAN environment. When composed in a single proxy, however, they cooperate to correct additional types of burst errors. Results are presented from a performance study conducted on a mobile computing testbed. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Modeling and design of folded evanescent-mode ridge waveguide bandpass filters are presented. The filter structure is decomposed into the cascade connection of empty-to-ridge waveguide discontinuities. The generalized scattering matrix of the empty-to-ridge waveguide discontinuity is obtained using mode matching method, from which the filter response can be obtained using cascading procedure. The folded coupling junction is ridged to achieve the required coupling value. A filter example is presented to verify the design approach. © 2001 IEEE.
