COVID-19 has infected more than 68 million people worldwide since it was first detected about a year ago. Machine learning time series models have been implemented to forecast COVID-19 infections. In this paper, we develop time series models for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries using the public COVID-19 dataset from Johns Hopkins. The dataset set includes the one-year cumulative COVID-19 cases between 22/01/2020 to 22/01/2021. We developed different models for the countries under study based on the spatial distribution of the infection data. Designing efficient and labor-saving prosthetic hands requires powerful hand gesture recognition algorithms that can achieve high accuracy with limited complexity and latency. In this context, the paper proposes a compact deep learning framework referred to as the CT-HGR, which employs a vision transformer network to conduct hand gesture recognition using high-density sEMG (HD-sEMG) signals. Taking advantage of the attention mechanism, which is incorporated into the transformer architectures, our proposed CT-HGR framework overcomes major constraints associated with most of the existing deep learning models such as model complexity;requiring feature engineering;inability to consider both temporal and spatial information of HD-sEMG signals, and;requiring a large number of training samples. The attention mechanism in the proposed model identifies similarities among different data segments with a greater capacity for parallel computations and addresses the memory limitation problems while dealing with inputs of large sequence lengths. CT-HGR can be trained from scratch without any need for transfer learning and can simultaneously extract both temporal and spatial features of HD-sEMG data. Additionally, the CT-HGR framework can perform instantaneous recognition using sEMG image spatially composed from HD-sEMG signals. A variant of the CT-HGR is also designed to incorporate microscopic neural drive information in the form of Motor Unit Spike Trains (MUSTs) extracted from HD-sEMG signals using Blind Source Separation (BSS). This variant is combined with its baseline version via a hybrid architecture to evaluate potentials of fusing macroscopic and microscopic neural drive information. The utilized HD-sEMG dataset involves 128 electrodes that collect the signals related to 65 isometric hand gestures of 20 subjects. The Internet of Things (IoT) revolutionizes smart city domains such as healthcare, transportation, industry, and education. The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is gaining prominence, particularly in smart hospitals and Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM). The vast volume of data generated by IoMT devices should be analyzed in real-time for health surveillance, prognosis, and prediction of diseases. Current approaches relying on Cloud computing to provide the necessary computing and storage capabilities do not scale for these latency-sensitive applications. Edge computing emerges as a solution by bringing cloud services closer to IoMT devices. This paper introduces SmartEdge, an AI-powered smart healthcare end-to-end integrated edge and cloud computing system for diabetes prediction. This work addresses latency concerns and demonstrates the efficacy of edge resources in healthcare applications within an end-to-end system. The system leverages various risk factors for diabetes prediction. We propose an Edge and Cloud-enabled framework to deploy the proposed diabetes prediction models on various configurations using edge nodes and main cloud servers. Performance metrics are evaluated using, latency, accuracy, and response time. How to characterize imprecision in multi-view clustering?

It is still challenging to cluster multi-view data since existing methods can only assign an object to a specific (singleton) cluster when combining different view information. As a result, it fails to characterize imprecision of objects in overlapping regions of different clusters, thus leading to a high risk of errors. In this paper, we thereby want to answer the question: how to characterize imprecision in multi-view clustering? Correspondingly, we propose a multi-view low-rank evidential c-means based on entropy constraint (MvLRECM). The proposed MvLRECM can be considered as a multi-view version of evidential c-means based on the theory of belief functions. In MvLRECM, each object is allowed to belong to different clusters with various degrees of support (masses of belief) to characterize uncertainty when decision-making. Moreover, if an object is in the overlapping region of several singleton clusters, it can be assigned to a meta-cluster, defined as the union of these singleton clusters, to characterize the local imprecision in the result. In addition, entropy-weighting and low-rank constraints are employed to reduce imprecision and improve accuracy. The swift proliferation of IoT devices in smart home ecosystems has resulted in notable interoperability issues due to the presence of numerous conflicting communication protocols, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, MQTT, CoAP, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. Current solutions frequently depend on static protocol mapping, which proves inadequate for the dynamic nature of smart home environments where network conditions and device needs are in constant flux. In this paper, we introduce the Dynamic IoT Protocol Adaptation Framework (DIP A), which merges Reinforcement Learning (RL) with Multi-Armed Bandit (MAB) optimization to facilitate real-time, adaptive protocol selection. DIPA leverages edge computing for predictive decision-making and incorporates Graph Neural Networks (GNN) to assess protocol compatibility. A middleware-based protocol translation layer guarantees seamless integration across varied IoT systems. We assess the framework using a sandbox populated with actual IoT data to evaluate performance concerning adaptability, latency, energy consumption, and scalability. The findings indicate that DIP A diminishes latency by 35% and enhances energy efficiency by 28% when compared to static adaptation approaches. The proposed framework augments interoperability, optimizes resource management, and fosters flexible communication within smart home environments.

Distributed Denial of services (DDoS) attack is one of the most dangerous attacks that targeted servers. The main consequence of this attack is to prevent users from getting their legitimate services by bringing down targeted victim. CICFlowMeter tool generates bi-directional flows from packets. Each flow generates 83 of different features. The research focuses on 8 features which are active min (f1), active mean (f2), active max (f3), active std (f4), idle min (f5), idle mean (f6), idle max (f7), and idle std (f8). CICFlowMeter tool has several problems that affected on the detection accuracy of DDoS attacks. The idle and active based feature of Shannon entropy and sequential probability ratio test (SE-SPRT) approach was implemented in this research. The problems of original CICFlowMeter were presented, and the differences between original and revised version of CICFlowMeter tool were explored. The DARPA database and confusion matrix were used to evaluate the detection technique and present the comparison between two versions of CICFlowMeter. The detection method detected neptune and smurf attacks and had higher accuracy, f1-score, sensitivity, specificity, and precision when revised version of CICFlowMeter used to generate flows. However, the detection method failed to detect neptune attack and had higher miss-rate, lower accuracy, lower f1-score, and lower specificity, and lower precision when original version used in generating flows.

Indoor positioning is a thriving research area, which is slowly gaining market momentum. Its applications are mostly customized, ad hoc installations;ubiquitous applications analogous to Global Navigation Satellite System for outdoors are not available because of the lack of generic platforms, widely accepted standards and interoperability protocols. In this context, the indoor positioning and indoor navigation (IPIN) competition is the only long-term, technically sound initiative to monitor the state of the art of real systems by measuring their performance in a realistic environment. Most competing systems are pedestrian-oriented and based on the use of smartphones, but several competing tracks were set up, enabling comparison of an array of technologies. The two IPIN competitions described here include only off-site tracks. In contrast with on-site tracks where competitors bring their systems on-site - which were impossible to organize during 2021 and 2022 - in off-site tracks competitors download prerecorded data from multiple sensors and process them using the EvaalAPI, a real-time, web-based emulation interface. As usual with IPIN competitions, tracks were compliant with the EvAAL framework, ensuring consistency of the measurement procedure and reliability of results. The main contribution of this work is to show a compilation of possible indoor positioning scenarios and different indoor positioning solutions to the same problem. © 2023 CCBY.

Even though earliest-deadline-first (EDF) is optimal in terms of uniprocessor schedulability, it is co-NP-hard to precisely verify uniprocessor schedulability for constrained-deadline task sets. The most efficient way to solve this problem in polynomial time is via a partially linear approximation of the demand bound function. Such approximation leads to a simple uniprocessor schedulability testing with speedup factor ρ. Such a result further leads to Deadline-Monotonic Partitioned-EDF on multi-processors with speedup factor of 1 + ρ − 1/m (where m is the number of processors). The current state of the art results indicate that ρ is within the range [1.5, 14/9]. Especially, it has been a conjecture that ρ = 1.5. This paper improves the range of ρ to (1.5026, 1.5380). The improved lower bound disproves the conjecture of lower bound 1.5. A novel technique is to construct an auxiliary function that is larger than the approximate demand bound function but keeps the supremum ρ unchanged. It solves the dilemma that beating the lower bound 1.5 requires extremely large task sets, while the large size makes it difficult to check the schedulability. This technique not only enables us to disprove 1.5 by a task set of only eight tasks, but also sheds light on future work in transferring/downsizing task sets and deriving utilization bound based tests for various workload abstraction models, such as DAG tasks. ©2021 IEEE

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a type of dementia that leads to memory loss and impairment, which afects patients’ lives badly. It is not curable yet, but its progression can be slowed down if detected at earlier stages. In this research study, we propose a transfer learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) model to classify magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) into one of four stages of Alzheimer's disease. One of the major limitations of the deep learning-based classification model is the non-availability of healthcare datasets related to AD. The widely used Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset has a major class imbalance issue. We propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) based data augmentation technique to overcome the data imbalance. This promotes the investigation of applying GANs to generate synthetic samples for minority classes in Alzheimer's disease datasets to enhance classification performance. The results show the progression in the overall classification process of AD.

Federated Learning (FL) is a revolutionary privacy-preserving distributed learning framework that allows a small group of users to cooperatively build a machine-learning model using their own data locally. Smart cities are areas that can generate high volume and critical data, which has the potential to revolutionize federated learning. Nevertheless, it is highly challenging to select a trustworthy group of clients to collaborate in model training. The utilization of a random selection technique would pose many threats due to malicious clients’ targeted and untargeted attacks. Such vulnerability may cause attacks and poisoning in the produced model. To address this problem, we present a mutual trust client-server selection approach based on matching game theory and bootstrapping mechanisms for federated learning in smart cities. Our solution entails the creation of: (1) preference functions for federated servers and smart devices (i.e., IoT/IoV) that enables them to sort each other based on trust score, (2) light feedback-base technique that leverages the cooperation of multiple client devices to assign trust value to the newly connected federated server, and (3) intelligent matching algorithms consider trust preferences of both parties in their design. According to our simulation results, our technique outperforms the baseline selection approach VanillaFL in terms of increasing the trust level and hence the global accuracy of the federated learning model and optimizing the number of untrusted selected clients.
