Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) swarms, the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm, Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and 5G cellular networks unveil unprecedented ways of providing Internet connectivity to devices located in remote places where traditional network infrastructures are not viable. Furthermore, computation elements can be placed closer to the users to comply with the stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of IoT applications. However, these new paths open new challenges that need to be addressed. Offering connectivity to devices and people located in hard to reach places without been compliant with the QoS constraints imposed by the nature of the tasks that they must carry out would be a wasted effort. This paper focuses on the optimal placement of microservices in resource constrained networks augmented by UAV swarms with the objective of minimizing the latency of IoT applications. Although there are approaches based on heuristics and others based on Machine Learning techniques, they may end up leading to suboptimal solutions. To avoid that, a Mixed Integer Lineal Programming (MILP) formulation of the problem is provided and evaluated. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the model for deploying services with optimal latency in IoT scenarios with UAV-assisted wireless networks. © 2023 IEEE.

Performance evaluation plays a crucial role in the design of network systems. Many theoretical tools, including queueing theory, effective bandwidth and network calculus, have been proposed to provide modeling mechanisms and resuits. While these theories have been widely adopted for performance evaluation, each has its own limitation. With that network systems have become more complex and harder to describe, where a lot of uncertainty and randomness exists, to make performance evaluation of such systems tractable, some compromise is often necessary and helpful. Stochas- tic network calculus （SNC） is such a theoretical tool. While SNC is a relatively new theory, it is gaining increasing interest and popularity. In the current SNC literature, much attention has been paid on the development of the theory itself. In addition, researchers have also started applying SNC to performance analysis of various types of systems in recent years. The aim of this paper is to provide a tutorial on the new theoretical tool. Specifically, various SNC traffic models and SNC server models are reviewed. The focus is on how to apply SNC, for which, four critical steps are formalized and discussed. In addition, a list of SNC application topics/areas, where there may exist huge research potential, is presented.

In a previous work, the authors proposed, on one hand, an extension on the syntax of fuzzy rules by including new predicates and exceptional rules and, on the other hand, the use of an ant colony optimization algorithm to obtain an optimal set of such rules that describes an initial fuzzy model. The present work proposes several extensions on that algorithm in order to improve the interpretability of the obtained fuzzy model, as well as the computational cost of the algorithm. Experimental results on several initial fuzzy models reveal the gain obtained with each extension and when applied altogether. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

The selection of the best color space is a fundamental task in detecting foreground objects on scenes. In many situations, especially on dynamic backgrounds, neither grayscale nor RGB color spaces represent the best solution to detect foreground objects. Other standard color spaces, such as YCbCr or HSV, have been proposed for background modeling in the literature;although the best results have been achieved using diverse color spaces according to the application, scene, algorithm, etc. In this work, a color space and color component weighting selection process is proposed to detect foreground objects in video sequences using self-organizing maps. Experimental results are also provided using well known benchmark videos. © 2014 IEEE.

In this paper, first, we present our simulation studies that help to outline key factors for a proper available-bandwidth-based flow admission control in ad-hoc Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In most cases, WSNs use the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, therefore our simulation studies are based on the same standard. The identified key factors are: (i) the overheads (back-off, retransmission, contention window, ACK packet, and ACK waiting time) associated with the unslotted IEEE 802.15.4 Carrier Sense Multiple Access Collision Avoidance (CSMA-CA) MAC layer protocol reduce the amount of available bandwidth, (ii) the impact of the MAC layer overheads on a node’s available bandwidth is a function of the number of active transmitters and data traffic load within the interference range of the node, (iii) contention count on a node that is not on a flow’s data forwarding path is a function of the number of active transmitters (along the flow’s data forwarding path) within the interference range of the node, and (iv) a flow’s intra-flow contention count on a node (along the flow’s data forwarding path) depends on the hopcount distance of the node from the source and the destination nodes, and the node’s interference range. Second, we present a survey of stateof- the-art flow admission control algorithms for ad-hoc wireless networks. The survey demonstrates that the state-of-the-art flow admission control algorithms do not completely consider the key identified factors or make incorrect assumptions about them. Third, we propose techniques that an available-bandwidth-based flow admission control algorithm can use to incorporate the key identified factors. Hence, the work presented in this paper can serve as a basis of a more effective available-bandwidth-based flow admission control algorithm for ad-hoc wireless networks. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2015.

Ant colony optimization (ACO) techniques have been revealed as an effective way to improve the interpretability of fuzzy models by reformulating an initial model [1,2]. However, despite this reformulation preserves the initial fuzzy rules, new rules can be added in the search for an interpretability enhancement. Thus, differences between the inferences of the initial and final models can arise due to the interaction among the initial rules and their adjacent new rules. This can lead to changes in the accuracy of the initial model. In order to keep the accuracy of the initial fuzzy model, this work proposes to include the difference between the outputs of the initial and final models as an additional criterion to evaluate the optimality of the reformulated model. This will allow to balance the interpretability against the accuracy within the optimization algorithm, even making the interpretability improvement conditional on a strict preservation of the initial accuracy. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

In the last years, traditional web applications have evolved from static web pages to dynamic applications, and this is the reason why the complexity of this type of applications has been increased. With the appearance of AJAX and Web 2.0 technology, a new breed of applications for the Internet has emerged. However, as web applications become more and more complex, the quality degree is negative affected, since initial stages of software life cycle are not considered in the development process of this type of applications. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a model-driven architecture to support web application development from the design to the implementation model. With this aim, the following tasks have been performed: A new profile extends UML metamodel with new concepts from the web domain, a new framework supports the developing of web applications by composing web elements, and also provides different types of communication patterns, and finally, a transformation model generates web applications from the UML extension proposed. The main contribution of this work is an increase in the quality degree of web applications provided by the model-driven architecture proposed, but other advantages that can be mentioned are a high performance degree achieved by a prefetching cache mechanism, and a high reusability, since web elements can be reused in different web applications. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems play a paramount role in the operation of electrical power systems. In this paper, two monitoring systems are developed and applied for self-sufficient hybrid systems based on renewable energy and hydrogen. Siemens WinCC flexible and National Instruments LabVIEW software packages have been used. The first one runs in an operator panel linked with a PLC. For the LabVIEW-based SCADA, a data acquisition card collects sensors information. Their main features and capabilities for local and remote use are exposed. © 2015 IEEE.

The discovery of process information in natural language documents is hindered by the innate ambiguity of natural language. This issue is even more challenging when process information is spread throughout several documents, each with the possibility of different formats, writers, and original purposes, that must be read and interpreted individually by a business analyst before their information can be uncovered. This work presents a semi-automated approach to process discovery from multiple documents simultaneously, making use of semantic similarity measures and natural language processing techniques to identify, gather, and extract process information from these documents. An experiment is conducted with this approach to demonstrate its use and results. © 2024 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier B.V.

Although the use of Ternary Content-Addressable Memories (TCAMs) in the flow tables of the Software-Defined Network (SDN) switches increases the efficiency of packets matching procedure, drawbacks such as their large power consumption and the limitation on the number of flow rules that can be installed must be taken into account. This paper tackles the joint problem of power consumption and TCAM size limitation in SDN. By exploiting the Rate Adaptation technique and compression methods, a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm is proposed to practically solve it. Simulations on a real network topology show that our proposed solution outperforms other state-of-The-Art approaches, both in terms of power saving gains (20% at non-peak TM) and maximum TCAM utilization (5%). © 2020 IEEE.
