In recent years, the impressive growth of new wireless technologies, together with the appearance of new requirements in applications and services, is progressively changing the use of networks. Due to the high mobility required, the network must adapt to the infrastructure to meet the demands of the users. As a result, service providers currently have to over-provision network capacity, which is costly. In addition, considering efficient resource planning in advance involves a lot of labor-intensive efforts. Consequently, network usage analysis is a very useful tool that allows network administrators to find patterns and anomalies. Whilst pattern detection provides administrators the ability to define the infrastructure, anomaly detection provides rich and valuable information for certain applications, for example, to avoid network saturation in urban areas during peak hours. This article proposes a new methodology based on orthogonal projections over Call Detail Records (CDR) for anomaly detection to help in the dynamic management of the network in an urban area. The method is evaluated in a real scenario provided by an Italian telecommunications operator, considering different locations in the Milan metropolitan area, differentiated by the geographic resolution of the data, reaching F1 scores above 0.8. In addition, a new ground truth is presented, hoping it will become a reference data set for the community, in the form of a set of locations that have been corroborated for use in evaluating anomaly detection techniques. © 2023, The Author(s).

In the rapidly growing interest in digital identity management, there is an important shift toward adopting verifiable credentials, often based on blockchain technology. This transition highlights a growing interest in the concept of Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), a paradigm that empowers individuals with control over their own digital identities through the use of verifiable credentials. This paper introduces a novel access control framework that leverages the principles of SelfSovereign Identity to significantly enhance the security of system access based on the users' credentials. By integrating the decentralized and user-centric nature of SSI, our proposed framework aims to address existing vulnerabilities in traditional access control systems. It provides a robust, scalable, and controlled mechanism that ensures higher levels of trust and security in digital interactions. This approach aligns with the broader digital identity trends favoring transparency, user autonomy, and trust. © 2024 IEEE.

The Internet of Things has brought digitalization to intensive domains through the automation of their real-world processes. However, the criticality of these processes is reflected in high Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for the application to work properly. Moreover, business-level QoS, such as the operational cost, are also key to the feasibility of these applications. This QoS depends on three, closely-related dimensions: the application software, the computing devices and the communication network, which provide high flexibility to obtain different performances at different costs. Thus, to achieve optimal QoS in these scenarios, the application, computing and networking dimensions must be optimized, considering their crucial interplay in a joint effort. Furthermore, this solution must allow multi-objective optimization, finding the optimal trade-off between operational cost and application performance. In this paper, we present Multi-Objective SDN Fog Optimization (MO-SFO), a holistic framework that allows for the optimization of both the response time and the deployment cost. MO-SFO is evaluated over an emulated smart city case study, showing the cost and performance trade-off achieved in different topologies.

In this paper, we study the dynamic formation of transients when plane waves impinge on a dispersive slab that abruptly changes its electrical properties in time. The time-varying slab alternates between air and metal-like states, whose frequency dispersion is described by the Drude model. It is shown how the physics of this complex system can be well described with the joint combination of two terms: one associated with temporal refractions and the other associated with spatial refractions. To test the validity of the approach, some analytical results are compared with a self-implemented finite-difference time-domain method. Results show how the transients that occur after the abrupt temporal changes can shape the overall steady-state response of the space-time system. In fact, far from always being detrimental, these transient states can be conveniently used to perform frequency conversion or to amplify or attenuate the electromagnetic fields.

Process discovery represents a high percentage of the time demanded along the business process management lifecycle. Texts in natural language, or process descriptions, can be explored as a critical information source. Extracting information automatically from these documents is challenging due to their ambiguity and complexity. While various (semi-)automated solutions are proposed in the literature, functional code access is rare, and tool deployment is almost nonexistent. This research introduces an accessible web interface that allows users to upload process descriptions and interact with the text, automatically identifying the main process elements from the Business Process Model and Notation. Interactions include highlighting elements associated with specific participants. An evaluation experiment with ten potential real-world users was conducted to assess the tool’s benefits. The experiment compared performance in answering questions related to process descriptions across three scenarios: using plain text, using the proposed tool, and using ChatGPT. Results indicated an advantage in using the tool, particularly regarding time consumption. Data collected on ChatGPT usage also provided insights into how users leverage this technology for problem-solving.

A Simple yet Effective Greedy Evolutionary Strategy for RNA Design

RNA design, also known as the RNA inverse folding problem, involves discovering a nucleotide sequence that folds into a target structure. This problem has been addressed from a wide number of approaches, improving the ability to solve it in a reasonable time over time. Despite all these efforts, today no method has completely solved the problem. We present GREED-RNA, a new RNA design algorithm, based on a simple greedy evolutionary strategy. The main feature is the use of several objective functions (Base-pair distance, Hamming distance, probability over ensemble, partition function, ensemble defect and GC-content) to select the best solution in each iteration, changing their weight according to the problem-solving conditions. The performance of GREED-RNA was tested using the Eterna100 benchmark, widely used in this area and never fully solved by any method. In addition, a comparative analysis against several published RNA design methods considering three metrics (solved structures, success rate and execution time), allowed us to verify that GREED-RNA performs better than previously developed methods, thus successfully improving the current ability to solve this problem. This tool also allows users to select a range within which the GC-content of the solution sequences must fall. Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks(UWSNs)are gaining popularity because of their potential uses in oceanography,seismic activity monitoring,environmental preservation,and underwater ***,these networks are faced with challenges such as self-interference,long propagation delays,limited bandwidth,and changing network *** challenges are coped with by designing advanced routing *** this work,we present Under Water Fuzzy-Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy networks(UWF-RPL),an enhanced fuzzy-based protocol that improves decision-making during path selection and traffic distribution over different network *** method extends RPL with the aid of fuzzy logic to optimize depth,energy,Received Signal Strength Indicator(RSSI)to Expected Transmission Count(ETX)ratio,and *** protocol outperforms other techniques in that it offersmore energy efficiency,better packet delivery,lowdelay,and no queue *** also exhibits better scalability and reliability in dynamic underwater networks,which is of very high importance in maintaining the network operations efficiency and the lifetime of UWSNs *** to other recent methods,it offers improved network convergence time(10%–23%),energy efficiency(15%),packet delivery(17%),and delay(24%).

In recent years, the field of autonomous driving has witnessed remarkable advancements, driven by the integration of a multitude of sensors, including cameras and LiDAR systems, in different prototypes. However, with the proliferation of sensor data comes the pressing need for more sophisticated information processing techniques. This research paper introduces a novel modification to an object detection network that uses camera and lidar information, incorporating an additional branch designed for the task of re-identifying objects across adjacent cameras within the same vehicle while elevating the quality of the baseline 3D object detection outcomes. The proposed methodology employs a two-step detection pipeline: initially, an object detection network is employed, followed by a 3D box estimator that operates on the filtered point cloud generated from the network's detections. Extensive experimental evaluations encompassing both 2D and 3D domains validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach and the results underscore the superiority of this method over traditional Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) techniques, with an improvement of more than 5% in the car category in the overlapping areas. In this paper, we analyze the scattering of an incident plane wave on a space-time metal slab in the presence of dispersion. Frequency dispersion is taken into account here by means of the Drude model. Analytical results, obtained via first-principle calculations, are in good agreement with in-house finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) computations.

The pervasive presence of the Internet results in an increasing number of people and systems interacting with each other. However, since each system only captures its own representation of reality, the information of the involved actors is scattered and even duplicated. This scattering generates problems by itself since only a small fragmented vision of the actors’ reality is available for each system. At the same time, the duplication of information in different systems can lead to inconsistencies that impede the correct integration of different systems. In this paper, we present an architecture based on the use of an upper blockchain in charge of federating a set of lower-level blockchains. This way, actor-centered data integration is achieved, offering a single, global vision of the dispersed information of each actor. This solution, called FedBlocks, relies on the blockchains’ federation concept where all interconnected systems are communicated and can share authorized data of their actors, providing a benefit for these systems and for the actors themselves. The proposed implementation has been successfully tested integrating 5689 records from 50 different institutions, belonging to 1156 actors.
