The last few years have seen a significant growth in communication networks. With the growth of data traffic, network operators seek network-engineering tools to extract the maximum benefits out of the existing infrastructure. This has suggested a number of new optimisation problems, most of them in the field of combinatorial optimisation. We address here the Terminal Assignment problem. The main objective is to assign a collection of terminals to a collection of concentrators. In this paper, we propose a Hybrid Scatter Search (HSS) algorithm to assign terminals to concentrators. Coupled with the Scatter Search algorithm we use a Tabu Search algorithm to locate the global minimum. We show that HSS is able to achieve feasible solutions to Terminal Assignment instances, improving the results obtained by previous approaches. © 2010 IEEE.

The emergence of e-commerce has prompted firms to redesign their supply chains. On the one hand, manufacturers are easy to adopt the traditional retail channel and online direct channel to sell their products. On the other hand, newly-established online exchange provides the retailers new avenue to readjust their inventories. This paper examines the pricing strategies of a manufacturer and a retailer in the complicated ecommerce environment. We first obtain the equilibrium solutions analytically. Then, we use numerical experiment to show how the price volatility and market share affect the pricing strategies. Our study finds that the price volatility in the online exchange has less impact on the retail price and the direct sale price. However, it has a large impact on the wholesale price. ©2010 IEEE.

Resilient Packet Ring is a recent telecommunication transport technology that combines the appealing functionalities from Synchronous Optical Network/ Synchronous Digital Hierarchy networks with the advantages of Ethernet networks. To effectively use the RPR's potential, namely the spatial reuse, statistical multiplexing and bi-directionality, it is necessary to route the demands efficiently. Given a set of point-to-point unidirectional traffic demands of a specified bandwidth, the demands should be assigned to the clockwise or to the counter-clockwise ring in order to yield the best performance. This paper suggests an efficient load balancing algorithm - Discrete Differential Evolution. We compare our results with the ones obtained by the Genetic Algorithm, the Differential Evolution, the Tabu Search and the Particle Swarm Optimisation, used in literature. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the DDE. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

With the recent growth of communication networks, a large variety of combinatorial optimization problems appeared. One of these problems is the Terminal Assignment Problem. The main objective is to assign a given set of terminals to a given set of concentrators. In this paper, we propose the Bees Algorithm to assign terminals to concentrators. The algorithm performs a kind of neighbourhood search and uses a local search method to locate the global minimum. The Bees Algorithm is a swam-based optimization algorithm that mimics the natural behaviour of honey bees. We show that the Bees Algorithm is able to achieve feasible solutions to Terminal Assignment instances, improving the results obtained by previous approaches. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Resilient Packet Ring (RPR), also known as IEEE 802.17, is a standard designed for optimising the transport of data traffic over optical fiber ring networks. The Weighted Ring Arc-Loading Problem (WRALP) is a NP-complete problem that arises in engineering and planning of the RPR systems. Specifically, for a given set of non-split and uni-directional point-to-point demands (weights), the objective is to find the routing for each demand (i.e., assignment of the demand to either clockwise or counter-clockwise ring) so that the maximum arc load will be minimised. This paper suggests an efficient traffic loading algorithm- Artificial Bee Colony (ABC). We compare our results with the ones obtained by the standard Genetic Algorithm, Tabu Search Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimisation, used in literature. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the ABC algorithm. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This study presents an analysis of the effect of different graph types on the comprehension of cyclic events. The results indicated that although round and linear graph designs are informationally equivalent, the round graphs are computationally better suited than linear graphs for the interpretation of cyclic concepts. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010.

Software internationalization aims to make software accessible and usable by users all over the world. For a Java application that does not consider internationalization at the beginning of its develop- ment stage, our previous work proposed an approach to locating need-to-translate constant strings in the Java code. However, when being applied on web applications, it can identify only constant strings that may go to the generated HTML texts, but cannot further distinguish constant strings visible at the browser side (need-to-translate) from other constant strings (not need-to-translate). In this paper, to address significant challenges in internationalizing web applications, we propose a novel approach to locating need-to-translate constant strings in web applications. Among those constant strings that may go to the generated HTML texts, our approach further distinguishes strings visible at the browser side from non-visible strings via a novel technique called flag propagation. We evaluated our approach on three real-world open source PHP-based web applications (in total near 17 KLOC): Squirrel Mail, Lime Survey, and Mrbs. The empirical results demonstrate that our approach accurately distinguishes visible strings from non-visible strings among all the constant strings that may go to the generated HTML texts, and is effective for locating need-to-translate constant strings in web applications. © 2010 ACM.

The major purpose of this paper is to establish a Sports E-learning Platform in order to provide athletic related teaching materials, such as physical motions and exercise rules. The platform can integrate the Multimedia teaching materials which include video and 2D animation. Multimedia contents of teaching material not only increase the learning efficient but also the interesting of learning, especially in the area of Physical education. The design concept of our works is based on ADDIE model of ISD (Instruction System Design) theory with the purposes of analysis, design, development, implementation, & evaluation. Via the usage of this physical education E-learning platform, we hope to let players perform efficient self learning for sports skills, indirectly foster mutual help, cooperation, nice norms of law-abiding via the learning of athletic rules, and become skilled at accurate recreation knowledge & first aid expertise. To address business requirements and to survive in competing markets, companies or open source organizations often have to release different versions of their projects in different languages. Manually migrating projects from one language to another (such as from Java to C#) is a tedious and error-prone task. To reduce manual effort or human errors, tools can be developed for automatic migration of projects from one language to another. However, these tools require the knowledge of how Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) of one language are mapped to APIs of the other language, referred to as API mapping relations. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, called MAM (Mining API Mapping), that mines API mapping relations from one language to another using API client code. MAM accepts a set of projects each with two versions in two languages and mines API mapping relations between those two languages based on how APIs are used by the two versions. These mined API mapping relations assist in migration of projects from one language to another. We implemented a tool and conducted two evaluations to show the effectiveness of MAM. The results show that our tool mines 25,805 unique mapping relations of APIs between Java and C# with more than 80% accuracy. The results also show that mined API mapping relations help reduce 54.4% compilation errors and 43.0% defects during migration of projects with an existing migration tool, called Java2CSharp. The reduction in compilation errors and defects is due to our new mined mapping relations that are not available with the existing migration tool. © 2010 ACM.

Testing-based fault-localization (TBFL) approaches often require the availability of high-statement-coverage test suites that sufficiently exercise the areas around the faults. However, in practice, fault localization often starts with a test suite whose quality may not be sufficient to apply TBFL approaches. Recent capture/replay or traditional test-generation tools can be used to acquire a high-statement-coverage test collection (i.e., test inputs only) without expected outputs. But it is expensive or even infeasible for developers to manually inspect the results of so many test inputs. To enable practical application of TBFL approaches, we propose three strategies to reduce the test inputs in an existing test collection for result inspection. These three strategies are based on the execution traces of test runs using the test inputs. With the three strategies, developers can select only a representative subset of the test inputs for result inspection and fault localization. We implemented and applied the three test-input-reduction strategies to a series of benchmarks: the Siemens programs, DC, and TCC. The experimental results show that our approach can help developers inspect the results of a smaller subset (less than 10%) of test inputs, whose fault-localization effectiveness is close to that of the whole test collection. © 2009 Springer science+Business Media, LLC.
