On connected target coverage for wireless heterogeneous sensor networks with multiple sensing units

The paper considers the connected target coverage (CTC) problem in wireless heterogeneous sensor networks (WHSNs) with multiple sensing units, termed MU-CTC problem. MU-CTC problem can be reduced to a connected set cover problem and further for-mulated as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem. However, the ILP problem is an NP-complete problem. Therefore, two distributed heuristic schemes, REFS (remaining energy first scheme) and EEFS (energy efficiency first scheme), are proposed. In REFS, each sensor considers its remaining energy and its neighbors' decisions to enable its sensing units and communication unit such that all targets can be covered for the required attributes and the sensed data can be delivered to the sink. The advantages of REFS are its simplicity and reduced communication overhead. However, to utilize sensors' energy efficiently, EEFS is proposed. A sensor in EEFS considers its contribution to the coverage and the connectivity to make a better decision. To our best knowledge, this paper is the first to consider target coverage and connectivity jointly for WHSNs with multiple sensing units. Simulation results show that REFS and EEFS can both prolong the network lifetime effectively. EEFS outperforms REFS in network lifetime, but REFS is simpler. © 2009 by the authors;licensee Molecular Diversity Preservation International, Basel, Switzerland.

In this study, we used latest reciprocating gait orthosis (RGO) and combined the use of functional electrical stimulation (FES). The combination provides larger support range and applies features of mechanical structures in walking assistant. The coordination of FES especially helps to restore the walking abilities that paralyzed patients lost. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

Similarity calculation has many applications, such as information retrieval, and collaborative filtering, among many others. It has been shown that link-based similarity measure, such as SimRank, is very effective in characterizing the object similarities in networks, such as the Web, by exploiting the object-to-object relationship. Unfortunately, it is prohibitively expensive to compute the link-based similarity in a relatively large graph. In this paper, based on the observation that link-based similarity scores of real world graphs follow the power-law distribution, we propose a new approximate algorithm, namely Power-SimRank, with guaranteed error bound to efficiently compute link-based similarity measure. We also prove the convergence of the proposed algorithm. Extensive experiments conducted on real world datasets and synthetic datasets show that the proposed algorithm outperforms SimRank by four-five times in terms of efficiency while the error generated by the approximation is small.

The Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) specification defines metadata of learning objects, which are used as the elementary reusable components in distance learning. The Content Object Repository Discovery and Registration/Resolution Architecture (CORDRA) specification provides a common architecture for the resolution, discovery, and sharing of these learning objects. These two specifications together define standardized ways in which learning objects can be discovered and reused by content designers. However, the current CORDRA and the definition of objects in SCORM only allow an object to be copied, updated, and reorganized in a new content aggregation, which is used as a delivery package to end users. This paper proposes a revised CORDRA architecture and a reusability mechanism to make instruction design easier. In particular, it proposes a structure called a reusability tree for tracking the history of reuse of learning objects in CORDRA. This paper also defines the notions of similarity, diversity, and relevancy of learning objects to make it easier for users to precisely search for and reuse learning objects. © 2006 IEEE.

Since robotics holds a special fascination among all the technological fields - due to its cross-disciplinary approach as well as its popularity through movies and literature - this field is attracting even the interest of pupils and students who are normally more reserved and cautious towards technological areas. In particular, practical experiences have shown that out of all the different technological areas robotics has a very high motivation impact on women. Thus, robotics can also be utilized as an instrument to bridge the gender gap in technological areas and fields of natural sciences. However, so far the majority of projects and initiatives focus on the instruction of the pupils and students themselves which naturally leads to restrictions concerning the scope of application. In order to enhance the impact factor, the integration of "multipliers", in particular the "educators" in elementary schools, middle schools und high schools - and even in the kindergarten - is an important task. Within this paper, we describe a concept for teaching teachers how to implement robotics curriculum into today's classrooms which is currently under development at the University of Stuttgart and the Technische Universität Berlin.

Investigating the determinants and age and gender differences in the acceptance of mobile learning

With the proliferation of mobile computing technology, mobile learning (m-learning) will play a vital role in the rapidly growing electronic learning market. M-learning is the delivery of learning to students anytime and anywhere through the use of wireless Internet and mobile devices. However, acceptance of m-learning by individuals is critical to the successful implementation of m-learning systems. Thus, there is a need to research the factors that affect user intention to use m-learning. Based on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT), which integrates elements across eight models of information technology use, this study was to investigate the determinants of m-learning acceptance and to discover if there exist either age or gender differences in the acceptance of m-learning, or both. Data collected from 330 respondents in Taiwan were tested against the research model using the structural equation modelling approach. The results indicate that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, perceived playfulness, and self-management of learning were all significant determinants of behavioural intention to use m-learning. We also found that age differences moderate the effects of effort expectancy and social influence on m-learning use intention, and that gender differences moderate the effects of social influence and self-management of learning on m-learning use intention. These findings provide several important implications for m-learning acceptance, in terms of both research and practice. © 2007 Becta.

Reducing energy consumption and prolonging lifetime of network to reduce the amount of packet loss are important issues in wireless sensor networks. Many researches derive the minimum hop path for each sensor to transmit its corresponding data to the sink. The sensors in the path forward the data. However, some common sensors in many forwarding paths will consume much more energy, and then they will die soon. Besides, the establishment and maintenance of the above routing need the whole information of the network, and this will consume more energy in gathering and synchronizing the locations of all sensors. In this paper, each sensor using the information of neighboring sensors derives the minimum hop path to the sink, and with the knowledge of the loading of its up-streaming sensors, it selects the minimum loaded sensor for its first sensor to transmit to. In this way, the loading of each sensor will be balanced. The above routing derives minimum balanced tree (MBT). This data structure will be adjusted locally while some sensors change their statuses in the network such that the control overhead needed to adjust is much less than to reconstruct all over again. Some results of simulated experimentations are shown in this paper.

Data hiding is a technique which embeds secret data into cover media. It is important to the multimedia security and has been widely studied. Recently, some researchers paid attention to reversible data hiding methods. These methods can reconstruct the original image from the stego-image when embedded data are extracted. In this paper, we propose a new reversible steganographic method for vector quantization (VQ) compressed images. The new method uses the hit pattern to achieve reversibility, and the hit pattern strategy successfully reduces the overhead. The codebook is partitioned by the extension method which makes the stego-image have good visual features. Also, a look-up table is used to speed up the partitioning operation. Compared to Chang et al.'s method, the experimental results show that the proposed method has higher capacity, better visual quality, and lower running time.

The cell functions and development are regulated by complex networks of genes, proteins and other components by means of their mutual interactions. These networks are called gene regulatory networks (GRNs). GRNs are used to reveal the fundamental gene regulatory mechanisms, to determine the reasons for many diseases and interactions between drugs and their targets. The introduction of experimental technologies such as microarrays, ChIP-chip which combines chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) with microarrays and ChIP-Seq which combines ChIP with DNA sequencing, has provided a large number of available datasets related to gene expression and transcription factors (TFs) and their interactions. These datasets are basis for further analysis to reveal the gene regulation mechanisms. Many models have been applied to represent gene regulatory networks. We have used the dynamic Bayesian network model which is able to cope with missing data and can include a prior knowledge about transcription factors and their activation/inhibition of corresponding genes. We describe the obtained results and survey the common structure learning algorithms for learning of GRN's structure. We tested the obtained GRN for test datasets with different sizes and in the paper describe obtained dependencies between the ratio of Bayesian score and BIC and dataset size.
