The rapid progress of computer and network technologies has attracted educational researchers to study the strategies and the effects of applying information technology in learning activities. Although previous research demonstrated the benefits of applying information technologies to learning process, its difficulty was also reveled. One of the major difficulties is owing to the lack of a learning environment that can record the learning portfolio of using information technologies in education, such that the teacher can analyze and evaluate the learning performance of students, and hence the teaching strategies can be adjusted accordingly. In this paper, we propose a web-search learning environment based on meta-index approach, which is able to assist the teachers in analyzing student learning behaviors of using search engines for problem solving. An experiment on 161 K4 students has been conducted to evaluate the benefits of this approach. Experimental results showed that the novel approach is able to assist the teachers to acquire more about the learning status of students, and hence more constructive suggestions can be given accordingly. ©2007 IEEE.

Multipath routing is an important consideration to support quality of service in communication networks. This paper proposes mobile agents aided congestion aware multipath routing protocol (MAMPR) which uses the multipath routing opportunities to transfer the packets between a source and a destination in mobile ad hoc network (MANET). Existing routing protocols proposed for MANET uses 'shortest route' as a metric to find routes. MAMPR finds multipath routes based on quality of service metric, 'congestion'. In MAMPR, intelligent mobile agents moving around the network, collect and disperse the network topology information based on congestion state. The congestion state is determined based on the interface queue occupancy and MAC layer drops by the static agent deployed at the link layer. This information helps in making congestion aware multipath routing decisions. MAMPR was implemented, tested and compared with ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing protocol (AODV) in network simulator (NS-2). Results show that MAMPR spatially distributes the traffic across the network, avoids congestion and achieves better end-to-end delay and network throughput with reduced control overhead.

Fault-tolerant emulation of a class of regular graphs in hypercubes

Embedding is of great importance in the applications of parallel computing. Every parallel application has its intrinsic communication pattern. The communication pattern graph is mapped into the topology of multiprocessor structures so that the corresponding application can be executed. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for emulation a class of regular graphs in the faulty hypercube, including the Hamiltonian path, the Hamiltonian cycle, the linear array, the ring, the mesh, and the complete binary tree. First, to obtain the replaceable node of the faulty node, n faults can be tolerated with expansion 2, dilation 3, congestion 1, and load 1. Furthermore, our method is also extending the distributed fault-tolerant emulation of a class of regular graphs in hypercubes. Unlike many existing algorithm which are capable of embedding only type of graphs, our algorithm embeds the above graphs in a unified way. By the results, we can easily port the parallel algorithms developed for the structure of a class of regular graphs to hypercube. This methodology of embedding enables extremely high-speed parallel computation.

The hypercube is a widely-used interconnection architecture in parallel machine. In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerant algorithm that embeds the Fibonacci cube to the faulty hypercube. The algorithm proposed here uses the bit ordering method for embedding the Fibonacci cube to the faulty hypercube efficiently. Here the Fibonacci cube of order n, Γn, which can be embedded to the m-dimensional hypercube Hm, in the condition of m ≥ n - 1. These results show the congestion 2, load 1, dilation 2, and unbounded expansion 2m/fn. At the same time, we demonstrate that the algorithm can tolerate O(m2-n2 faults.

Regression testing, which plays an important role in software maintenance, usually relies on test adequacy criteria to select and prioritize test cases. However, with the wide use and reuse of black-box components, such as reusable class libraries and COTS components, it is challenging to establish test adequacy criteria for testing software systems built on components whose source code is not available. Without source code or detailed documents, the misunderstanding between the system integrators and component providers has become a main factor of causing faults in component-based software. In this paper, we apply mutation on interface contracts, which can describe the rights and obligations between component users and providers, to simulate the faults that may occur in this way of software development. The mutation adequacy score for killing the mutants of interface contracts can serve as a test adequacy criterion. We performed an experimental study on three subject systems to evaluate the proposed approach together with four other existing criteria. The experimental results show that our adequacy criterion is helpful for both selecting good-quality test cases and scheduling test cases in an order of exposing faults quickly in regression testing of component-based software.

In this paper a systematic remeshing method of triangle mesh surface is proposed for CAD applications. A densitysensitive edge marking function is proposed for surface resampling. Surface energy minimization is used to redistribute vertices for face geometry regularization. A simulated annealing method is proposed for vertex connectivity optimization. During each stage,the deviations from original mesh are prevented,and the boundaries and features are well preserved. While all modifications are performed locally,the error-prone global parameterization is entirely avoided. The advantage and robusmess of this technique are verified by many examples from real-world product design.

This symposium reports on progress in the first year of a two year project called Project EnROLE (Encouraging Role Based Online Learning Environments) which is funded by the Carrick Institute for Learning & Teaching in Higher education in Australia. The project aims to link a small but growing number of university teachers who are using online role play, building them into a community via three strategies: developing a repository of sharable/reusable role play learning designs with an associated peer review process;facilitating evaluation and publication of papers about their role plays (for example the role play stream at this conference);and establishing sustainable national and international role play partnerships. The project also aims to double the number of online role play designers in two years by scaffolding beginners in a four stage process before designing their own role play: awareness raising;participating in another designer's role play;evaluating another designer's role play;and moderating another designer's role play. The strategy for growing the community takes a multi-pronged approach, firstly emphasising personal interaction by fostering university-based clusters of online role play designers, then building into state networks for both face to face and online professional development events. Optimal section scantling design for ship structures using response surface method and genetic algorithm

In this paper, we propose an integrative procedure for solving the optimal section scantling design problems of the ship structures. First, the Taguchi method is applied to Find out the significant factors for the quality characteristics as the variables of the predicting mathematical model. Then, the response surface method (RSM) is used to construct the mathematical model. Finally, the genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted to search for the optimal soluion for obtaining the optimal section scantlings of the ship structures. In this paper, we also demonstrate the optimal section scantling design of a water breaker structure for the container ship. In this example, under the constraints of the von Mise stress, the positive shear stress and the negative shear stress, the design objective is the minimum weight of the water breaker structure. According to the proposed procedure, we obtain the weight is 16503 kg which is less than the existing weight 18098 kg. The weight of the water breaker structure is, therfore, reduced 8.81%. So, we can get the satisfactory result by using the proposed integrative design procedure.

Intelligent search engine is an effective tool for solving many bottleneck problems in network information retrieval. It involves acquiring, preprocessing, representing and integrating data and information available at different levels of services (e.g. HTML/XML/RDF/OWL etc.) and eventually converts them into useful intelligent semantic information of each domain. This paper proposes firstly a systemic framework for building (semi-)automatically ontology learning from Web pages and considers some key problems about extracting concepts and interrelationships in ontology learning.

This research developed a web-based reasoning of mathematical situation word problems using the natural language processing technology. Our system provided the steps of morphological analysis, syntax analysis, semantic analysis and rule judgment to infer the semantic structure and operational structure of situation word problems. It also adopted the language of MathML and SVG to provide the web-based illustration of solving procedure in mathematical situation word problems.
