With the rapidly development of distance learning and the XML (Extensible Markup Language) technology, metadata becomes an important item in an e-learning system. Today, many distance learning standards such as SCORM, AICC CMI, IEEE LTSC Learning Object Meta-data (LOM), and IMS Learning Resource Metadata XML Binding Specification, use metadata to tag learning materials, shareable content objects, and learning resources. However most metadata is used to define learning materials and test problems. Few metadata is dedicated for assessment in learning. In this paper we proposed an assessment metadata model for e-learning operations. With the support from the assessment metadata, we can collect information at the question cognition level, Item Difficulty Index, Item Discrimination Index, questionnaire style, and question style. The assessment analysis model provides individual questions, summary of test results, and analytical suggestions. The suggestions and results can tell teachers why a question is not suitable and how to correct it. Teachers can see the analysis of test result and fix problematic questions. With the cognition level analysis, teachers can avoid missing items in teaching. The mechanism developed also suggests an e-learning system, with adaptive learning content and individualized tests, as well as good advice for the teachers.

In this paper, we propose the Hierarchical Multicast Session Initiation Protocol (HMSIP), which integrates the IETF Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) with the IP multicast protocol and the RSVP resource reservation technique, to reduce the handoff delay, deployment cost and support fast handoff for the MH with guaranteed multimedia QoS that the traditional approaches such as the Hierarchical Remote Subscription (HRS) and Bi-directional Tunneling (BT) cannot do. We mathematically analyze handoff delays of the HRS, BT and HMSIP schemes. Finally, we show in simulations that the HMSIP can significantly reduce handoff delays suffered by the HRS and achieve more stable delays than the BT, with a small proportion of extra bandwidth than that of the bandwidth-optimal HRS.

Until recently children with very profound disabilities–children who cannot speak and can move only their eyes or head–could be made comfortable, but by and large could not be educated. Assistive technologies now enable them to communicate and to be educated alongside their non-disabled peers. This is a wonderful development. But what is the financial cost? In this paper we look in detail at the costs associated with the education of two children who have used assistive technologies developed at our university and compare them with the educational costs had they not started using the assistive technologies. For these two children the costs of the technologies and special teachers hired are offset by savings from the tuition and transportation of sending them to special schools. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The purpose of this paper is to promote a new online mathematical learning model that students not only use electronic blackboard to write down their mathematical problem solving solutions but also use the voice recording tool to give oral explanations about their thinking behind the solutions. To cultivate students' critical thinking capability and encourage collaborative peer learning, the new learning model also requests students to criticize others' solutions and to reply others' arguments. With the multimedia supporting tools, students are more easily to communicate with each other about what they think and how they solve mathematical problems by using the electronic blackboard and voice recording tools. After analyzed the recorded information with statistical method, we found that the performance of female students is superior to those male students in communications and mathematical problem solving. Additionally, students with higher final exam grades have better mathematical abilities of doing critiques, arguments and communications.

In this paper, we shall propose a lossless image compression method based on Base Switching Transformation (BST). In order to lower down the difference between the minimum and maximum pixel values of each block used in BST and reduce the number of bits that BST needs, the first step we take is to modify each pixel value of the original image by subtracting the value of the neighboring pixel from it. The reason is that the pixel values of two neighboring pixels are usually very close to each other. Besides, we provide a hierarchical concept for the BST method. It can effectively improve the compression ratio. With our experimental results, we have made a comparison among our method, the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) compression method, and Joint Bi-level Image Experts Group (JBIG) compression method, in which our method proves to be superior.

We propose a lossless image compression method, in which we compress an image by saving the differences between the encoding pixels and their adjacent pixels. To deal with a pixel, we refer to not only its up pixel but also its left pixel and replace the value of the pixel itself with the value of difference. The experimental results show that the method gives quite an impressive performance. Since the values of most adjacent pixels in an image are closed, we can use this simple, effective way to compress the image.

Although invalidation report (IR)-based cache management schemes can effectively reduce the wireless bandwidth requirement as well as minimize the energy consumption of portable equipments, they suffer from the long query latency and the poor bandwidth utilization. G. Cao has proposed several novel techniques to address these two problems by means of the updated invalidation report (UIR). One of his techniques is that the server broadcasts hot data items right after the IR and clients download the up-to-date data items into their local caches if they have invalid cache copies corresponding to the broadcasted data items. However, the Cao's scheme requires servers to maintain the cache states of all the clients inside its cell. It is not scalable because the high state maintenance overhead. Therefore, we propose a counter-based cache invalidation scheme in this paper where the server can identify hot data items without the need to maintain information about the cache states of clients.

Researchers have used number of nodes to measure the extensibility of a topology. However, this metric is not very evident. In this paper, we introduce a specific metric called extensible density to measure the extensibilities of interconnection networks. Some topologies have high degree of extensibilities, but efficient parallel algorithms can apply only on a special subclass of these topologies. Furthermore, we extend the concept of density to measure the applicable extent of parallel algorithms.
