Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a cardiovascular disease which occurs due to an abnormal weakening of the aorta wall. This failure in aortic wall causes the inner layer to be ruptured because of excessive blood pressure. Consequently, the blood flows into the space between lumen and epithelial, hence a thrombus is generated. On the other hand, excessive growth in the aorta diameter can lead to death as a result of a rupture in the epithelial. In this paper, we present a technique for automatic segmentation of abdominal aortic aneurysm. The proposed method integrates the exclusive information extracted from histogram and morphological properties of aortic lumen to segment the aorta. Then the proposed algorithm utilizes a search technique with priori information about the lumen to segment epithelial area automatically.

Human activity recognition is an active research field in computer vision and image processing. This paper has been concentrated on the recognition between different cyclic motion activities such as running and walking. The proposed system consists of three major steps. Initially by using a single camera, in a variety of angles, the movement of the object is detected, and object silhouette is generated in each frame. Then, our proposed method for generating a skeleton of silhouette is presented. The skeleton is used to determine human activities such as running and walking. In the last stage, a rule-based classifier is used to classify the action.

In this paper, a novel face representation in terms of dense local image descriptors is proposed. Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) and Gabor, two of the most popular local image descriptors, at dense grid pixels of a face image are used to represent the face. The efficiency of the representation has been investigated in gender recognition. There are four problems when applying the SIFT to facial gender recognition. (1) There may be only a few keypoints that can be found in a face image due to the missing texture and ill-illumined faces;(2) The SIFT descriptors at the keypoints (we called it sparse SIFT) are distinctive whereas alternative descriptors at non-keypoints (e.g. grid) could cause negative impact on the accuracy;(3) Most of the existing methods employ SIFT descriptors matching in which relative larger image size is required in order that enough keypoints can be found to support the matching and (4) The matching is assumed that the faces are well registered. We provide solutions to the above difficulties in this paper and the problem of recognizing gender using the combination of SIFT descriptors and Gabor of face images is studied. The Gabor representations of the face images are fused with the dense SIFT at the feature-level to improve the accuracy. AdaBoost is adopted to select features and form a strong classifier. The experimental results on a large set of faces have shown that the proposed method can achieve high accuracies even for faces that are not aligned.

In this paper we present a new cross-platform approach for video game delivery in wired and wireless local networks. The developed 3D streaming and video streaming approaches enable users to access video games on set top boxes and handheld devices that natively are not capable to run PC games. During the development of the distributed gaming system we have faced a number of challenges and problems posed by the hardware and network limitations. In order to solve these problems we have developed a multilevel testing methodology which is based on user assessment and technical measures for the system under development. In this paper we focus on the technical measures and instrumentation that we use for the system's performance measurement and testing. The benefits of our testing methodology are demonstrated through examples from the development and testing work. © 2010 IEEE.

The rapidly evolving wireless communications environment and 3G, where the standard are constantly created and modified, has given rise to the integration of GPS (Global Positioning System) and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication). This integration has been widely applied in many disciplines including Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and Logistic Management to aid the users to locate their vehicles remotely. Further on, the fast growth of city transportation also has stimulated the development of VMS where it is recognized as one of the major components of ITS. However, this system is rarely being implemented on embedded system using DSP processor. Thus, this paper discusses design and implementation of GSM/GPRS integration in a TMS320VC6713 for Vehicle Location that permits users to communicate with their vehicles via a Short Message Service (SMS). This system provides an alternative solution to solve vehicle theft and hijacking problems where the system is able track the real-time moving car location by using cellular phone. The system performance analysis has been carried out where the executions of three functions have been measured in clock cycles.

Vehicle velocity estimation is an important aspect of intelligent transportation systems. Normally velocity is estimated using dedicated laser speed traps and Doppler radars. Recently, the use of cameras is becoming more common for the purpose of traffic surveillance and smart surveillance system. It is thus the aim of this paper to propose a method for vehicle speed estimation using these existing video cameras. In this paper, we propose a vehicle speed estimation method from video analysis. The method proposed contains several steps; image preprocessing, centroid extraction and tracking. The proposed method transforms the 2D image points into a 3D virtual world to obtain actual vehicle position in 3D space. This is to account for perspective distortion commonly seen in images. Using these 3D points and measuring the time for displacement, the vehicle speed is obtained. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method gives accurate velocity estimation.

Driving always involves risk. Various means have been proposed to reduce the risk. Critical motion detection of nearby moving vehicles is one of the important means of preventing accidents. In this paper, a computational model, which is referred to as the dynamic visual model (DVM), is proposed to detect critical motions of nearby vehicles while driving on a highway. The DVM is motivated by the human visual system and consists of three analyzers: 1) sensory analyzers, 2) perceptual analyzers, and 3) conceptual analyzers. In addition, a memory, which is called the episodic memory, is incorporated, through which a number of features of the system, including hierarchical processing, configurability, adaptive response, and selective attention, are realized. A series of experimental results with both single and multiple critical motions are demonstrated and show the feasibility of the proposed system. © 2006 IEEE.

Shape from focus (SFF) which uses a sequence of space-variantly defocused frames works under the constraint that there is 'no magnification' in the stack. In the presence of sensor damage and/or occlusions, there will be missing data in the observations and SFF cannot recover structure in those regions. In many applications, the capability of filling-in missing data is of critical importance. In this paper, we investigate the effect of motion parallax in SFF and demonstrate the interesting possibility of how it can be judiciously used to jointly inpaint image and depth profiles. When there is relative motion between the 3D specimen and the camera, by virtue of the inherent pixel motion in each of the frames, it is possible to obtain a focused image and depth map of the scene despite missing regions in the observations. © 2009. Colorectal cancer includes cancer of the colon, rectum, anus and appendix. Since it is largely preventable, it is extremely important to detect and treat the colorectal cancer in the earliest stage. Virtual colonoscopy is an emerging screening technique for colon cancer. One component of virtual colonoscopy, image pre-processing, is important for colonic polyp detection/ diagnosis, feature extraction and classification. This paper introduces a general variational approach based framework for a computer aided diagnosis system for colorectal cancer. It includes techniques for 3D colon segmentation, 3D colon object reconstruction by iso-surface generation, and 3D centerline extraction. The proposed framework has been validated on 22 real CT colonography datasets.
