The authors develop a path metric for sequential search based on the linear model. The metric forms the heart of an edge-linking algorithm that combines edge elements enhanced by an optimal filter. From a starting node, transitions are made to the goal nodes by a maximum likelihood metric. This metric requires only local calculations on the search space and its use in edge linking provides more accurate results than other linking techniques.< >
Many image compression techniques involve segmentation of a gray level image. With such techniques, information is extracted that describes the regions in the segmented image, and this information is then used to form...

A technique to guide landmark matching known as hopping dynamic programming is described. The location of the model in the scene is estimated with a least-squares fit. A heuristic measure is then computed to decide if the model is in the scene. The shape features of an object are the landmarks associated with the object. The landmarks of an object are defined as the points of interest of the object that have important shape attributes. Examples of landmarks are corners, holes, protrusions, and high-curvature points.< >

This paper discusses the relationship between the zero crossings or zeros of band-limited signals and their nonlinear transformations. It is proved that the bandwidth of a signal can be compressed by a ratio of 1/ n if and only if the signal has n th-order zero crossings or zeros (if complex). Also, a monotonic nonlinearity in the observation of a band-limited signal can be identified from the zero crossings (or zeros) of the derivative of the observed signal. (The results are for one-dimensional signals. Extensions to two-dimensional signals remain to be addressed.)

brings together the central issues involved in this exciting and topical subject.;Drawing on half a century of combined experience, the authors describe state of the art and the latest developments in the field, including:;- fundamentals of 'intelligent' imageprocessing, specifically intended for Machine vision systems;;- algorithm optimization;;- implementation in high-speed electronic digital hardware;;- implementation in an integrated high-level software environment;;- applications for industrial product quality and process control.;There are hundreds of illustrations in the book, most of them created using the author's 'PIP' software - a sophisticated intelligent imageprocessing package.;A demonstration version of this software, as well as numerous examples from the book, are available at the authors' Web site: http://***/bruce/***
