VIOMA: Video-Based Intelligent Ocular Misalignment Assessment

The measurement of ocular alignment is critical for the diagnosis of strabismus. Current clinical methods for assessing ocular misalignment are subjective and frequently rely on the expertise of practitioners and the extent of patient cooperation. computer-aided diagnosis methods in recent years have improved automation and precision of measurement, but still, fall short of the requirement of clinical practice. In this study, a video-based intelligent ocular misalignment assessment (VIOMA) system, was proposed to provide an objective, repeatable, user-friendly and highly-automated alternative modality for clinical ocular misalignment measurement, in which the automatic cover tests were performed under a control and motor unit, simultaneously the eye movements were tracked using a motion-capture module and assessed through video analysis techniques, determining the presence, type, and magnitude of eye deviation. For system evaluation, an automatic cover tests video dataset for strabismus (StrabismusACT-76) was established, which consists of data from 76 participants. The Bland-Altman plot, used to compare the results of the VIOMA system and human expert, showed a mean value of 1.26 prism diopter (PD) and a half-width of the 95% limit of agreement of ±7.17 PD. VIOMA system presented a mean absolute error of 3.04 PD in measuring the deviation magnitude, within a 5 PD error tolerance. Additionally, the system’s measurements were strongly correlated with that of video labeling with the mean value of -0.26 PD, a half-width of the 95% limit of agreement of ±3.56, and the average error of 1.31 PD. The experiment results indicated that the proposed method has the capability to offer accurate and efficient assessment of ocular misalignment. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Using integral images for fast computation of sums of rectangular areas is very popular in computer vision. However the method does not extend naturally to rotations at arbitrary angles. We propose a novel solution to elegantly compute integral images at generic angles. Our method is exact in the sense that no approximations are used to derive it and it is vulnerable only to the unavoidable aliasing effects of discretization. Detailed experiments show that our method is more accurate than previously proposed ideas. We also demonstrate its usefulness by detecting 2D barcodes embedded in images. © 2008 IEEE.

We proposed in this paper a novel weighted longest increasing subsequence to improve the performance of the appearance-based object recognition. The LIS is employed to find the true keypoint matches that have consistent geometric order in both query and gallery images. Then, the similarity between query and gallery images is measured by the sum of the weights of the true keypoints. The experimental results shown that our approach outperforms the SURF and SURF + RANSAC Homography approaches. © 2012 ICPR Org Committee.

In image-based place recognition, an image is used to deduce the location of the viewer during image acquisition. The identified place can subsequently be used to provide additional information to the user. This demonstration paper briefly describes a system that performs image-based place recognition on outdoor images, made possible by viewer-centric data sampling and local feature-based scene identification. It also explains our proposed demonstration that displays the recognized place on a map and provides information of amenities in its vicinity.

People with dementia lose their ability to learn, solve problems, and communicate. And they are all around us. To potentially replace some of their diminished memory and problem-solving abilities, Erroneous-Plan Recognition (EPR) aims to detect defects or faults in the execution of correct plans by the dementia patient, and send timely audio and visual prompts to the dementia patient and caregiver in order to correct these faults. The scope of this work is for the patient who lives alone in a smart home. One challenge is that the definition of plan can be very subjective. It is necessary to regard a plan as an Activity of Daily Living (ADL), choose the ADLs to monitor, and deploy available sensors to acquire data. With the sensor data, there can be activity recognition, followed by plan recognition. Another challenge is the highly random and erroneous behaviour of dementia patients. Multiple, sequential, and independent layers of error detection can be arranged in a prioritised manner to detect specific errors first, and provide an error probability if no specific errors are detected. On the whole, most of the EPR results are very good as they are at least 0.9, indicating that the data is linearly separable. The 2-layer EPR system, which uses the blacklist and whitelist as Layer 1 and naive Bayes classifier as Layer 2, is significantly more accurate than each individual layer. In fact, 5 out of 6 actors have an accuracy above 0.9. With the encouraging results, there will be more technical and domain challenges which we can address in the near future.

Although there are several devices for screening the digestive tract, Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) is now the gold standard for a non-invasive viewing of small intestine. However, in each examination, more than 55,000 images are recorded. Reading so many images can be time consuming. Thus, image processing and vision recognition techniques are being created to help doctors to save the time for diagnosis. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of WCE devices and recent progresses in vision-based techniques on reducing the time needed for WCE video reading. The recently developed techniques can be classified into three categories: disease (bleeding) detection, image-level and video-level summarizations. Firstly, the features and classification strategies employed for automatic bleeding, disease or abnormal detection are presented. Second, this paper presents the image-level summarization based on motion estimation, C-mean clustering and epitome techniques. Third, we present and compare the various color-bar based global-level WCE video summarizations. The capabilities and advantages of different techniques for improving the efficiency of diagnosis are evaluated. © 2011 IEEE.

Physiotherapay exercise is a vital medical treatment process as it helps bringing a normal life back to patients. However due to the requirements of time spent and interactions with medical specialists such as doctors, therapists, and nurses, patients have to deal with some difficulties such as time and cost of travelling, waiting for availability of specialists and ineffective personal exercises. These difficulties could cause worse on those patients living in the areas distant from medical centres or lacking of medical staffs and experts. Therefore the concept of tele-physiotherapy was created to improve the quality of physiotherapy services. The objective of tele-physiotherapy is to allow patients and medical experts carrying on their sessions through telecommunication networks as if they are in the same place. computer vision technologies, then, can be useful and helpful in monitoring process of system because the quality assessments of physiotherapy exercise are mainly based on vision. This article is discussing the feasibility of applying computer vision technolgies in tele-physiotherapy while showing an example of using computer vision in fall detection. The study shows that computer vision has some potentials in enhancing and improving the telephysiotherapy system but the study of some considerations is needed before implementing. © ACM 2009.

In image-based face profiling classification, face alignment, which transforms the face images in order that the 2D coordinates of the facial features are consistent with each other, is considered as an important preprocessing step before the actual classification to maximize classification accuracy. Unfortunately, accurate face alignment is a time-consuming process and a challenging problem especially for low-resolution face images, where eye localization is a tough task. In this paper, we aim to develop a real-time gender recognition system where face alignment is omitted and the detected face bounding box is used directly. Three measures are employed to compensate for the errors caused by the misalignment: firstly, unaligned faces are included in the training set; secondly Local Binary Patterns (LBPs) and Gabor features are extracted to represent the face images and components, respectively and thirdly a probability model is proposed to fuse holistic- and component-based features with a boosting scheme. The experiments using unaligned and manually aligned faces show that a comparable accuracy can be obtained even without alignment.

images with text are frequently used on Internet for different purposes. Automatic recognition of text from web images plays an important role on extraction and retrieval of web information. However, the web images are usually in low resolution with artifacts and special effects, which makes word recognition a challenge task even after the text has been localized. In this paper, we propose a robust text recognition technique to efficiently convert the web images into text format. The proposed technique first makes use of the L0 norm smoothing to increase the edge contrast of the input web images. The images are then binarized on each color channel. A connected component analysis is followed to identify the possible character components. Finally the character candidates are recognized by the OCR engine after skew correction. Extensive experiments have been conducted on the latest ICDAR 2011 robust reading competition dataset for born-digital text. The experimental results show the superior performance of our proposed technique. © 2012 ICPR Org Committee.
