Identify the potential pathways and candidate biomarkers of stroke associated with bipolar disorder: Bioinformatics and system biology approach

The field of computational bioinformatics and systems biology analysis is rapidly expanding due to advancements in bioinformatics tools. Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe psychiatric condition affecting both adults and adolescents. In recent years, the risk of stroke has increased among individuals with BD. Background studies indicate that BD and stroke share numerous biochemical and genetic characteristics. Due to traditional endocrinological approaches, no collaborative research exists, and no treatment options have been established for BD and stroke patients. The aim of this study is to identify common molecular pathways and potential therapeutic targets in BD and stroke that could be utilized to predict disease progression. To achieve this, shared genes were identified to determine common pathways. Based on the biochemical, molecular, and genetic interactions among these shared genes, this study identifies the most significant hub genes. To further explore these interactions, analysis such as the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network, topological properties, enrichment analysis, co-expression network, gene regulatory network (GRN), and physical interaction network are conducted. The GO annotation indicates that most of the genes are linked to MAP kinase activity and tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily binding. The KEGG pathway analysis revealed that the predominant genes are associated with apoptosis and the IL-18 signaling pathway. This comparison helps understand the biochemical and genetic characteristics shared between BD and stroke. Predictive drug analysis has identified consistent potential biomarkers associated with both conditions, providing a scientific foundation for investigating their diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Finally, chemical experiments could be conducted to further validate the efficacy of these drugs.

As global demand for renewable energy continues to rise and available land resources become increasingly scarce, floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems have emerged as a cost-effective solution to meet energy needs while minimizing environmental impacts. In 2023, the global installed capacity of FPV reached 5.9 GW and is projected to grow to 10 GW by 2030. This review systematically examines the current status and historical development of floating solar technology, focusing on key challenges and solutions in structural design and material selection. It also explores methods to enhance FPV efficiency, including optimal tilt angles, cooling systems, bifacial modules, and tracking systems, while addressing the economic feasibility of FPV. Furthermore, a simulated 2 MW FPV system based on meteorological data from Suwon, South Korea, is analyzed. The system demonstrates a high-performance ratio of 90.5% and a maximum system production output of 1835 MWh when the tilt angle is optimized between 32° and 34° and the azimuth angle is set to 0°. © 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

Modeling Fiber To The Home (FTTH) networks involves several technical aspects and design considerations to enable effective and high-quality service delivery. This research seeks to boost the received signal quality for end-users inside a FTTH network. In order to create suitable and high-quality FTTH networks, this study will simulate FTTH networks utilizing network feasibility criteria, with an emphasis on BER and Q-factor. The signal distribution inside access networks is improved using Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and 10G-Passive Optical Network (PON) technology is used since it can deliver a fourfold improvement in downstream data transfer rates per user. Simulation result using Optisystem 21 software, by setting transmitter wavelengths of 1490 nm and 1550 nm with a loss of 0 dB for a maximum of 2 users for total access based on the Q-factor calculation, which must be more than 6, while the BER must be less than 1 × e−9. system performance parameters that demonstrate Q-factor and Bit Error Rate (BER) give good quality and good performance is also shown by eye pattern in optical simulation. For 1490 nm, the highest Q-factor for 2 users is 35.8226, with a minimum BER of 2.4360 × 10−281. For 1550 nm, the highest Q-factor is 15.3668 (in phase) and 14.8087 (in quadrature), with minimal BER values of 1.3674 × e−53 (in phase) and 6.4291 × e−50 (in quadrature). Good performance is also shown by eye pattern in optical simulation that displays amplitude signals. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Lightweight image super-resolution aims to reconstruct high-resolution images from low-resolution images using low computational costs. However, existing methods result in the loss of middle-layer features due to activation functions. To minimize the impact of intermediate feature loss on reconstruction quality, we propose a Feature Interaction Weighted Hybrid Network (FIWHN), which comprises a series of Wide-residual Distillation Interaction Block (WDIB) as the backbone. Every third WDIB forms a Feature Shuffle Weighted Group (FSWG) by applying mutual information shuffle and fusion. Moreover, to mitigate the negative effects of intermediate feature loss, we introduce Wide Residual Weighting units within WDIB. These units effectively fuse features of varying levels of detail through a Wide-residual Distillation Connection (WRDC) and a Self-Calibrating Fusion (SCF). To compensate for global feature deficiencies, we incorporate a Transformer and explore a novel architecture to combine CNN and Transformer. We show that our FIWHN achieves a favorable balance between performance and efficiency through extensive experiments on low-level and high-level tasks. © 1999-2012 IEEE.

Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) provide a dual-purpose solution, functioning as both energy-generating systems and integral building materials. BIPV adoption has been limited due to a lack of color integration, preventing the panels from being used in building designs. However, efforts to incorporate color into the BIPV layers have been made, but they often reduce panel efficiency. BIPV implementation faces several challenges that hinder widespread adoption, such as fire safety concerns and the integration of color aesthetics and light-emitting diode technology. This article explores these challenges and recent advancements that enhance the aesthetic versatility and efficiency of BIPV systems, including the use of quantum dots, Bragg reflectors, and silver-alloyed copper indium gallium selenide cells. The study also highlights critical considerations for optimizing BIPV systems, such as energy performance and fire safety. PVsyst 7.2 simulation results for a 10 kW BIPV system installed in South Korea demonstrate effective strategies for mitigating efficiency losses through investigating the orientation of angles. Results showcase a high-performance ratio of 0.891, a high production of 14 147 kWh year−1 at a tilt angle of 30° while facing south, and a peak energy of almost 1450 kWh injected into the grid under varying conditions. © 2025 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

The advancement of intelligent transportation systems underscores the importance of data-driven approaches in traffic forecasting, which plays a crucial role in tasks such as traffic signal control and route guidance, among others. However, the inherent uncertainty stemming from regional traffic dynamics, coupled with intricate spatio-temporal correlations, poses formidable challenges to accurate traffic prediction. Moreover, the complexities inherent in sequence forecasting across varying scales further exacerbate the accuracy dilemma. Recognizing the need for integrating information across spatial and temporal dimensions to enhance forecasting precision, a novel solution termed Spatial Temporal Masked Autoencoder (STMAE) is introduced. The STMAE framework addresses these challenges through a two-stage learning process. In the pre-training phase, an autoencoder architecture is employed to extract spatio-temporal features from the data. In the fine-tuning phase, the pre-trained encoder of the STMAE model undergoes further refinement to specifically target traffic forecasting tasks. Extensive evaluations validate the effectiveness of the proposed STMAE model. Notably, STMAE demonstrates competitive performance, achieving 3.32 Vehs MAE for long-term (60 min) traffic forecasting while operating within a reduced computational budget. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Novel orange-red glaze based on in-doped CaFe2O4 red chromophore: Synthesis, properties and characterizations

The CaFe2-xInxO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) pigment with red shade was successfully synthesized through solid state reactions. The crystal structure, color development mechanism, morphology and its application in the glaze were studied. XPS analysis confirmed Fe resides in +3 oxidation state. Combined with UV–Vis–NIR analysis, it is determined that the formation of red shade of the pigment is due to the 6A1(S) → 4T2(D), 6A1(S) → 4A1, 4E(G) and 6A1(S) → 4T2(G) transitions of Fe3+ in the visible light region. The pigment was applied to the lead-free low temperature glaze to evaluate its potential in preparing new glaze color. The as-synthesized glaze showed orange-red shade. With increased In3+ doping concentration, the glaze demonstrates a stronger red tone. The glaze also shows high NIR solar reflectance. Inferred from SEM-EDS, the pigment particles are evenly scattered in the glaze. Therefore, CaFe2-xInxO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) red pigment is a qualified candidate for red shade glaze preparation. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Recent studies have focused on leveraging large-scale artificial intelligence (LAI) models to improve semantic representation and compression capabilities. However, the substantial computational demands of LAI models pose significant challenges for real-time communication scenarios. To address this, this paper proposes utilizing knowledge distillation (KD) techniques to extract and condense knowledge from LAI models, effectively reducing model complexity and computation latency. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of LAI models leads to prolonged inference times during distillation, while their lack of channel awareness compromises the distillation performance. These limitations make standard KD methods unsuitable for task-oriented semantic communication scenarios. To address these issues, we propose a fast distillation method featuring a pre-stored compression mechanism that eliminates the need for repetitive inference, significantly improving efficiency. Furthermore, a channel adaptive module is incorporated to dynamically adjust the transmitted semantic information based on varying channel conditions, enhancing communication reliability and adaptability. In addition, an information bottleneck-based loss function is derived to guide the fast distillation process. Simulation results verify that the proposed scheme outperform baselines in term of task accuracy, model size, computation latency, and training data requirements. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

In the field of intelligent recruitment, automated resume matching and non-contact interviews have significantly improved the efficiency of companies in finding suitable candidates. This corresponds to the techniques of person-job matching and AI interviews. However, current person-job matching methods lack substantial data support, while AI interview methods struggle to integrate deep information from multimodal data and provide comprehensive evaluations of candidates’ responses. To address these challenges, we propose a multimodal data-driven person-job evaluation model, comprising two key stages: a person-job matching method based on graph attention and a multimodal AI interview method. Using a dual-perspective graph neural network approach, we accomplish the screening of candidates and positions. In the second stage, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of candidates’ interview performance based on text, audio, and image modalities, providing a more objective, consistent, and efficient interview assessment method. Experimental results demonstrate that our person-job matching method surpasses current popular techniques and effectively transfers features to the next stage. In our multimodal AI interview method, we achieve accurate scoring of candidate responses, assessment of intonation stress levels, and inference of their Big Five personality traits, comprehensively evaluating candidates from multiple perspectives. Displacement is a pivotal physical parameter, and advancements in displacement sensor technology have enabled the creation of a diverse array of physical and mechanical sensors through seamless integration with mechanical transducers. In this study, we introduce a displacement sensing technique leveraging an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) assisted microwave photonic filter. By translating displacement-induced variations in the EFPI’s optical reflection into peak frequency shifts within its frequency response, we achieve large-dynamic-range displacement measurements with outstanding signal quality and demodulation ease. Proof-of-concept demonstrations showcase a substantial 5 mm range with a remarkable sensitivity of 1.148 GHz/mm, achieved using a basic single-mode fiber-based EFPI with a movable external mirror. Besides, nm-scale displacement monitoring is experimentally validated through a phase-measurement approach. Notably, the sensitivity and dynamic range can be tailored by adjusting the microwave photonic filter system’s parameter, i.e., the dispersion parameter of the dispersive element in the system. Furthermore, we introduce a strategy to enhance the dynamic range further by employing a virtual frequency down-conversion technique with an additional interferometer. This proposed technique opens avenues for developing a series of high-sensitivity and broad operating-range physical and mechanical sensors based on a simplified EFPI measurement configuration. © 1963-2012 IEEE.
