A new measuring method based on the common-path heterodyne interferometry is used to determine the twist angle, pre-tilt angle, and cell gap of an optically compensation bend (OCB) liquid crystal (LC) cell. In this paper, the twist angle of an OCB LC cell can be determined by measurement the phase difference instead of the reflectance difference. Because the measuring system is based on the common-path heterodyne interferometry, it can provide the most sensitive way to measure the twist angle of an OCB LC cell against the air turbulence and environmental vibrations. The method has some merits, e.g., a simple setup, in real-time test and reliability, etc.

This paper presents a wideband photonic antenna consisting the laser diode, matching circuit, RF amplifier and microstrip patch antenna are fabricated and connected together to perform in uplink system. Laser driver is used to supply the dc biasing for the laser. Lastly, the LD-matching circuit, RF amplifier and antenna were arrange together and connected to perform the wireless uplink system. The simulated and measured results are presented and discussed. These results show useful photonic antenna design that achieves relatively wide bandwidth and has potential to be applied in RoF technology.

One of the major challenges in developing autonomous systems is to make them able to recognize and categorize objects robustly. However, the appearance-based algorithms that are widely employed for robot perception do not explore the functionality of objects, described in terms of their affordances. These affordances (e.g., manipulation, grasping) are discriminative for object categories and are important cues for reliable robot performance in everyday environments. In this paper, we propose a strategy for object recognition that integrates both visual appearance and grasp affordance features. Following previous work, we hypothesize that additional grasp information improves object recognition, even if we reconstruct the grasp modality from visual features using a mapping function. We considered two different representations for the grasp modality: (1) motor information of the hand posture while grasping and (2) a more general grasp affordance descriptor. Using a multi-modal classifier we show that having real grasp information significantly boost object recognition. This improvement is preserved, although to a lesser extent, if the grasp modality is reconstructed using the mapping function.

The Oriented architecture of macromolecules plays a critical role in many aspects of Nanobiotechnology such as in the development of biosensors. To this regard, S-layers which constitute the outermost cell envelope component of many prokaryotic organisms, represent unique self assembled systems with the capability to rearrange into monomolecular and oriented arrays. These properties can be exploited to promote their crystallization on surfaces (e.g. silicone) which is pivotal for the subsequent immobilization of macromolecules and development of new biosensors. In this work the crystallization of bacterial S-layers obtained from Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus sphaericus CCM2177 on silicone, mica and quartz crystal surfaces were investigated. The SDS page results of S-layers isolated from the above mentioned bacteria put in evidence that their molecular weight (MW) was around 120 KDa and, as reported in the literature, slightly higher for those extracted by Bacillus thuringiensis. In addition, results showed that S-layers isolated from Bacillus thuringiensis form large crystalline domains on mica after 5 min whereas those extracted from Bacillus sphaericus CCM 2177 form a compact monolayer on silicone after 2 h. Results in this work put in evidence the possibility to use these substrates for the fabrication of sensitive biosensors.

It is well-known that the DoubleMinOver classifier as an extendibility of MinOver was developed to provide a maximum margin solution with a bias. But, it can be found that the DoubleMinOver algorithm only classifies the vector pattern and fails to work in the pattern represented with the second-order tensor. In this paper, we propose a novel DoubleMinOver classifier named STDoubleMinOver that can directly classify the second-order tensor pattern. Compared with the existing DoubleMinOver with only one weight w, the proposed STDoubleMinOver induces two weight vectors u and v so as to deal with the second-order tensor. The experiments here have demonstrated that the proposed STDoubleMinOver has a superior classification to the vectorized DoubleMinOver.

The InterMedia project aims at progressing towards user-centric convergence of multimedia, by putting the user at the center of services (multimedia applications), devices and interfaces for the interaction. One of the main implications of the user-centric approach is the seamless and secure access to content, regardless of the users' location and terminal device(s), which requires suitable solutions to manage mobility, context-awareness and digital rights. Under this respect this paper reviews the mechanisms developed within InterMedia to support the above issues, and discusses their integration in a common networking framework addressing a generic scenario for content access.
