In this paper, an improved hybrid fuzzy technique (Fuzzy Logic and Template matching) for Malaysian Automatic License Plate Recognition (M-ALPR) system is proposed. The system is proposed to reduce the program complexity of the existing M-ALPR system and to decrease the processing time of recognizing Malaysian license plates. First, the algorithm to recognize the license plates is presented, by taking advantage of Matlab and C++ programming language benefits in order to increase system efficiency. Feature extraction using vertical line counter is introduced in this system. Later, with the help of OpenCV, the hybrid fuzzy technique is developed using the C++ language. Then, the comparison between these two implementations on M-ALPR system was reported. The improved system was tested on 740 samples images from real scene and the results show that the proposed improvement supports the accurateness and high speed processing of M-ALPR system.

A method for detecting spikes and slow burst in photic evoked electroencephalogram (EEG) was proposed. The spikes were detected by combining methods of the morphological filter and the similarity coefficient in the time domain. The slow burst was detected by using pole of AR model in the frequency domain. The proposed method was applied for the photic evoked EEG data containing spikes and slow burst, and brought satisfactory coincidence with the results interpreted by a qualified electroencephalographer. © 2009 SICE.

Currently, it is noticed that users tend to choose shorter password as their authentication which can be easily attacked. Biometric technologies such as fingerprint scanning, voice authentication, face recognition, signature, hand geometry and iris recognition is now playing an important role especially in application related to security issue. In this work, we present an approach to generate a unique and more secure cryptographic key from iris template. The iris images are processed to produce iris template or code to be utilized for the encryption and decryption tasks. AES cryptography algorithm are employed to encrypt and decrypt the identity data. Distance metric such as hamming distance and Euclidean distance are used for the template matching identification process. Experimental results show that this system can obtain a higher security with a low false rejection or false acceptance rate.

The Chirp-Scaling Algorithm (CSA) is one of the most widely used synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image reconstruction method. However, its applicability is limited to straight flight trajectories and monostatic SAR. We present a new mathematical treatment of the CSA from the perspective of Fourier Integral Operators theory. Our treatment leads to a chirp-scaling-based true amplitude imaging algorithm, which places the visible edges of the scene at the correct locations and directions with the correct strength. Furthermore, it provides a framework for the extension of the chirp-scaling based approach to non-ideal imaging scenarios as well as other SAR imaging modalities such as bistatic-SAR1 and hitchhiker-SAR.2 © 2009 SPIE.

Performance Analysis of the D-STTD communication system with AMC Scheme

In this paper, we propose a Double-Space Time Transmit Diversity (D-STTD) communication system with Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) scheme and analyze its performance using simulation experiments. The simulation results show that the probability of selecting a high Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) level increased as the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) improved. Furthermore, the D-STTD communication system with AMC scheme provided a more uniform throughput distribution throughout the entire SNR range compared to its counterpart which did not apply AMC scheme. Also, the maximum throughput of the D-STTD communication system with AMC scheme was twice that of a conventional AMC communication system or a Space Time Transmit Diversity (STTD) communication system with AMC scheme.

Gender differences in the mu rhythm during empathy for pain: An electroencephalographic study

Our recent magnetoencephalography study demonstrated that the mu rhythm can reliably indicate sensorimotor resonance during the perception of pain in others (Cheng, Y., Yang, C.Y., Lin, C.P., Lee, P.L., Decety, J., 2008b. The perception of pain in others suppresses somatosensory oscillations: a magnetoencephalography study. NeuroImage 40, 1833-1840). The current study further investigated the neurophysiological mechanism underpinning empathy for pain in relation with gender through the measurements of the electroencephalographic mu suppression in healthy female (N = 16) and male (N = 16) adults during the observation of body parts in painful or no-painful situations. The results demonstrate that both genders exhibited sensorimotor activation related to pain empathy. However, females showed stronger mu suppressions than males when watching the painful as well as the non-painful situations. Further, the mu suppression for pain empathy was positively correlated with the scoring on the personal distress subscale of the interpersonal reactivity index only in the female participants. The present findings suggest the existence of a gender difference in pain empathy in relation with the sensorimotor cortex resonance. The mu rhythm can be a potential biomarker of empathic mimicry. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, we address the following question: ¿When can we guarantee the optimality of linear coding at all internal nodes of a network?¿ While sufficient conditions for linear coding throughout the network are known, it is not clear whether relaxing the linearity constraints at the terminal nodes can result in simpler operations at the internal nodes. We present a novel method to analyze the space of network solutions using the constraints resulting from the network topology, and we identify sufficient conditions for an optimal linear solution at all internal nodes. These conditions are also sufficient to characterize the rate region only in terms of Shannon information inequalities.

Shamir proposed the first (t, n) threshold secret sharing scheme. Shamir's scheme is ideal and perfect. In this paper, we propose two modifications of Shamir's secret sharing scheme. In our first modification, each shareholder keeps both x-coordinate and y-coordinate of a polynomial as private share. In our second modification, dealer uses polynomial with degree larger than the threshold value t to generate shares for a (t, n) threshold scheme. We show that these two modified schemes are ideal and perfect. Using these two modifications, we design a multilevel threshold secret sharing schemes (MTSS). We prove that the proposed scheme is secure. © 2009 IEEE.

This paper presents a comprehensive analytical approach to maintain queuing delay in a router at a required level through closed-loop feedback control under aggregated traffic flows from various traffic classes. The approach is able to bound average queuing delay but still achieve a high system utilization by regulating traffic arrival rate implicitly through a movable queuing threshold. The queuing threshold is adjusted dynamically through feedback of average queuing delay measurement. Consequently, packets are dropped dynamically with respect to the changes of queuing threshold and the packets loss event served as an implicit congestion indicator. Three major contributions are given in this paper: (1) a discrete time queuing model is developed to derive the mapping table of average queuing delay and queuing threshold; (2) a traffic model that models LRD aggregated Internet traffic through superposing of N MMBP-2 arrival processes; (3) a closed-loop feedback control to control queuing delay at its target level based on expected system utilization. Matlab is used to perform queuing analysis and simulation. Statistical evaluation is performed to show the efficiency and accuracy of the analytical and simulation results.

The 3S (Shrinking-Search-Space) multi-thresholding method which have been used for segmentation of medical images according to their intensities, now have been implemented and compared with FCM method in terms of segmentation quality and segmentation time as a benchmark in thresholding. The results show that 3S method produced almost the same segmentation quality or in some occasions better quality than FCM, and the computation time of 3S method is much lower than FCM. This is another superiority of this method with respect to others. Also, the performance of C-means has been compared with two other methods. This comparison shows that, C-means is not a reliable clustering algorithm and it needs several run to give us a reliable result.
