In this paper a multiinput second order sliding rnode control algorithm for underwater vehicles trajectory tracking will be introduced. The proposed approach guarantees perfect tracking and stabilization even in presence of disturbances and uncertainties typical of this kind of systerns. The trajectories to be tracked are designed basing on an artificial potential field technique. The control objectives are achieved by acting on the voltage of the motors driving the thrusters and the resulting forces and torques are continuous.

We present the Websim project, a simulation environment for self-developed simulation tools. It provides Web and distributed features for a simulation model or library created using the C/C++ language. Websim is implemented using CGI and Javascript technologies. It can be accessed on any platform (Unix, PC or Mac) using a standard Web browser. With this simulation environment, an easier and faster integration of simulation and visualization techniques and tools into the Internet will be supported. The possibilities and problems of these techniques are discussed.

The provision of multimedia application services over mobile wireless network is a very challenging problem. One major problem encountered is the maintenance of the QoS satisfaction for every application running over the network. Wireless ATM (WATM), as one of the next generation wireless system, is expected to provide such a service. After reviewing four current projects dealing with QoS management in the wireless network, this paper presents our approach to deliver an alternative solution to the problem, which is called AdQoS (adaptive QoS). This system introduces some improvements over the other systems. The comparison among the techniques are presented and discussed.

As mobile computing gains popularity, the need for ad hoc routing protocols will continue to grow. There have been numerous simulations comparing the performance of these protocols under varying conditions and constraints. One question that arises is whether the choice of MAC protocol affects the relative performance of the routing protocols being studied. This paper investigates the answer to that question by simulating the performance of three ad hoc routing protocols when run over different MAC protocols. It is determined that the choice of MAC layer protocol does, in fact, affect the relative performance of the routing protocols.

This paper deals with the transmission of digital data in ATM like format over a noisy wireless channel affected by burst of errors. It evaluates and compares go-back-N (GBN) and selective repeat (SR) for non-real time traffic over the wireless portion of the network for variable packet size and fixed packet size, and the effect of packet loss and check-sum error percentages on the throughput. Results show that SR-ARQ achieves better throughput under a wide variety of error rate conditions than GBN-ARQ.

This paper is presented to explain the steps in removing the secondary part of Jawi characters (such as dots, hamzah, and madda). The method used is based on the connected component labelling algorithm or CCLA and is added with the secondary type detection algorithm (STDA) by Bushofa and Spann (see Image and Vision Computing, vol.15, p.167-79, 1997). Several steps in the algorithm however, have been modified in order for it to be matched with the handwritten Jawi characters. Several samples of the result from the suggested algorithm are also presented. The result promises a good outcome.

This paper present a technique used in H.263 video coding to detect all-zero-AC occurrence without performing the transformation and quantization process. It is developed based on the energy preservation theorem. When the total AC energy in the pre-transform domain is known, the occurrence of all-zero-AC is predictable by comparing the total AC energy with the quantization threshold Q/sup 2/. The evaluations indicate that its prediction efficiency and speed gain depends on motion activities, level of Q and also the relative overhead imposed by the shortcut itself. In conclusion, the proposed new algorithm is expected to be practical in all common environments (low bit rate) targeted by H.263 standards as no negative speed gain is observed during the evaluation for all range of QP (Q=2.5QP).

Typically, two's complement is chosen to represent numbers since arithmetic operations of addition and subtraction are easy to perform. However, due to sign extension, an arithmetic operation for small dynamic data ranges may require switching power in the entire word length. Herein, we develop a two's complement adder with the dynamic-range determination and sign-extension units to reduce power consumption. According to the actual data range by minimizing sign-extension bits, only partial functional blocks of an adder are active to generate a final result of which sign bit is then extended to match the original word length. Experimental results demonstrate that our 32-bit carry-lookahead adder has 22.9% power reduction than the conventional one while dynamic ranges of input data are the Gaussian distribution with a mean of 16 bits and a standard deviation of 8 bits.

The term hybrid systems designates those physical processes that exhibit both continuous and discrete aspects. On the other hand, some fully continuous systems can benefit from the introduction of an inherently event-based system such as an intelligent supervisor thus becoming hybrid themselves. In the present paper, the focus is on this last class of system. More precisely, a new control approach for continuous time systems with unknown high frequency gain sign is presented relying on a logic-driven sliding mode control. Such an approach is compared with a consolidated one based on the so-called Nussbaum function .
