Cooperative relaying introduces spatial diversity through the creation of a virtual antenna array. The vast majority of the research in digital cooperative relaying assumes the modulation level used by both the source and relay to be the same. This assumption does not necessarily hold when adaptive modulation is implemented. In conventional selection combining, the branch with the highest SNR is chosen; we refer to this scheme as SNR-based selection combining (SNR-SC). In this paper, we introduce BER-based selection combining (BER-SC), as an alternative to SNR-SC, to be used in cooperative communications when a relay may use a modulation level different than that of the source. We provide BER performance analysis for the SNR-SC and BER-SC schemes and show that BER-SC significantly outperforms SNRSC, without any increase in complexity. Moreover, we analytically quantify the gain achieved by using BER-SC over SNR-SC through asymptotic approximation. We note that BER-SC and SNR-SC schemes are identical when the received signals belong to the same modulation level.

Computational power optimization is crucial in the battery power limited secure wireless mobile networks. Therefore, in this paper, we (a) introduce a hardware/software set-up to measure and model the battery power consumption of different encryption algorithms through real-life experimentation and (b) compute optimal power (number of rounds) allocation for encrypting packets such that the constraints on power and security are met. We present the results for three block ciphers: DES, IDEA, and COST though the same analysis can be extended to the other ciphers such as AES, RC4, etc. A new measure called "vulnerability" that quantifies the success of linear cryptanalysis attack is proposed and its relationship with the power consumption is explored. Two mathematical optimization problems are then posed: (a) compute the optimal power allocation to encrypt each packet such that the vulnerability is minimized subject to a total power constraint and (b) to compute the optimal number of encryption rounds for each packet such that a total power constraint is met. The differences in these two formulations are presented. A closed form solution to the first problem is derived while the second optimization formulation is posed as an integer program and is solved numerically. Several numerical results are also provided.

Emerging data centers may host a large number of applications that consume CPU power, memory, and I/O resources. Previous studies focus on the allocation of resources in order to perfectly satisfy the demands seen in the current cycle, and the existing application placement algorithms are all based on applications. The existing application placement algorithms in literature assume that the consumption of system resources is proportional to the level of workloads submitted to the system. In this paper, we revealed that it may not be the case in some circumstances. Based on this observation, we design and implement an application placement framework, called EAPAC, for data centers. The developed framework is able to judiciously allocate to application servers a proper mixture of different types of application requests as well as an appropriate number of requests in each type. Further, we investigate the issue of resource conflicts among different applications when there exist concurrent requests in the system. We have conducted extensive experiments to evaluate the performance of the developed framework. The experiment results show that compared with the existing studies, EAPAC can improve the performance by 30% in terms of the reply rate. Especially, when there are concurrent requests in the system, the performance can be improved by 100%. © 2011 IEEE.

Current and future air traffic is requiring new procedures and systems to achieve a greater automation of air-traffic operations. Particular difficulty presents the automation of arrival air-traffic operations in Terminal Areas due to aircraft speeds and environment variability into a delimited airspace where multiple aircraft converge. Several projects have proposed guidelines to implement new operational concepts as well as airborne and ground systems to carry out corresponding procedures. Developing procedures and systems are closely related. Therefore, usually it requires to analyze and to design them in a combined manner. In this paper we present an agent-oriented analysis and modeling of airborne systems capabilities to perform automated arrival and approach procedures based on user preference trajectories. A detailed architecture model of airborne capabilities is achieved through a methodological analysis of an arrival traffic scenario within the trajectory based operations paradigm. ©2009 IEEE.

Future air traffic is demanding innovative procedures and systems that take advance of new technologies capabilities. Especially significant are new procedures and systems for automating arrival air traffic operations in Terminal Areas. In this work, we present an air-air negotiation protocol to be used as a new component of the on board automation system for self-spacing flight operation for merging and in-trail separation in Terminal Area. Current works about such systems are centered on helping to the Flight Crew (FC) to maintain aircraft-aircraft in-trail separation. However it is necessary integrating in these systems new capabilities that allow decentralized flight procedures to achieve air-air agreements that provide local rearrangement of a predefined aircraft arrival sequence when operational circumstances makes it recommendable. The suggested air-air negotiation protocol can be considered as an extension of capabilities of the current Aircraft Separation Assurance system (ASAS). It has been modeled under the agent-oriented programming paradigm and an ad-hoc multi-agent platform has been used for its implementation and preliminary evaluation. © 2008 IEEE.

Numerous forms of consumer-generated media (CGM), such as social networking services (SNS), are widely used. Their success relies on users’ voluntary participation, often driven by psychological rewards like recognition and connection from reactions by other users. Furthermore, a few CGM platforms offer monetary rewards to users, serving as incentives for sharing items such as articles, images, and videos. However, users have varying preferences for monetary and psychological rewards, and the impact of monetary rewards on user behaviors and the quality of the content they post remains unclear. Hence, we propose a model that integrates some monetary reward schemes into the SNS-norms game, which is an abstraction of CGM. Subsequently, we investigate the effect of each monetary reward scheme on individual agents (users), particularly in terms of their proactivity in posting items and their quality, depending on agents’ positions in a CGM network. Our experimental results suggest that these factors distinctly affect the number of postings and their quality. We believe that our findings will help CGM platformers in designing better monetary reward schemes. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

A graphene oxide layer deposited on top of a thin gold film of a fiber optic surface plasmon resonance sensor is investigated. Comparison is made on the sensing performance of modified sensor and a standard gold coated fiber optic surface plasmon resonance sensor. The graphene oxide coated sensor shows high sensitivity of approximately 400 nm/RIU to surrounding refractive index when tested with different liquids.

This paper presents an automated and comprehensive system for eliminating rib shadows in chest radiographs, which integrates lung field identification, rib segmentation, rib intensity estimation, and suppression. We designed a region of interest (ROI)-based method to estimate a suitable initial lung boundary for active shape model (ASM) deformation by determining the translation and scaling parameters from the lung ROI. By considering the anatomical structure of the rib cage, we developed a locale sampling scheme to achieve nonparametric rib modeling. This scheme integrates knowledge-based generalized Hough transform (GHT) for accurate rib segmentation. We subsequently estimated rib intensity using the real-coded genetic algorithm (RCGA). Experimental results indicate that the relative conspicuity of the nodules increased after rib suppression, compared to the original image. Additionally, the proposed system uses only one standard chest radiograph, and the dual-energy subtraction technique is not required. Thus, this system is suitable for radiologists and computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) schemes for detecting lung nodules in chest radiographs. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
