Adaptive token bank fair queuing (ATBFQ) algorithm has been proposed as a cross-layer scheduling technique for 4G wireless systems recently. This algorithm takes higher layer quality of service (QoS) attributes such as priorities, interflow fairness, and delay constraints into account. By selecting the user terminals (UTs) in a certain prioritized manner derived from QoS attributes, the performance of the UTs, suffering from high interference and/or shadowing in particular, can be improved. The ATBFQ algorithm has been tested in a multicell environment in the presence of intercell interference by comparing with reference Score Based (SB) and Round Robin (RR) algorithms. In this paper, we further analyze ATBFQ primarily with regard to fairness along with other performance metrics accessed in a more elaborate system considering varying interference and loading conditions. Furthermore, an adaptive method for the allocation of resources is proposed for ATBFQ parameter selection, and is shown to have better performance in various loading conditions. It is observed from simulation results that ATBFQ with adaptive parameter selection outperforms the reference schemes in terms of queuing delay and UT throughput for different network loading cases.

This paper proposes two methods for identifying recognition error. The first method is a two-level schema - given the recognition hypothesis of an utterance, an utterance classifier (UC) is first applied to decide if the hypothesis is error-free or erroneous; followed by a word classifier (WC) which is applied to each word hypothesis in the erroneous utterance to decide if the word hypothesis is a misrecognition. The second method is a one-level schema in which a word classifier is applied directly to all word hypotheses to detect word recognition errors. We compare the two methods at both word and utterance levels. Experimental results show that the two methods are comparable in terms of word error detection. However, the two-level schema is very effective in filtering out error-free utterance hypotheses, which offers a key advantage to economize on word error detection.

The security of multimedia data transmitted over wireless networks is of increased interest. Encryption mechanisms securely transmit multimedia data over insecure networks. A major issue that has received very little attention so far is that the very same properties that gives ciphers (encryption mechanisms) their cryptographic strength make them sensitive to channel errors as well. In addition, this would enhance the error propagation inherent in compressed data. Therefore provision of security for multimedia transmission over wireless channel results in throughput loss. Nevertheless this lost throughput is traded for increased security. To our knowledge there has been no substantial effort to optimize this tradeoff. Opportunistic encryption proposed in this work is a way to optimize the tradeoff between security offered and the throughput lost due to a cipher. We show that opportunistic encryption methods that adapt to channel variations will lead to an overall increase in the system performance. Two broad scenarios based on channel knowledge are considered, (a) exact channel state information up to a finite time horizon is known and (b) only the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is known. Proposed opportunistic encryption framework is found to achieve significant gains in throughput compared to fixed block length encryption methods for a wide range of average SNR values. We have shown that applying opportunistic encryption on JPEG compressed image results in a better quality of received image and improved security compared to fixed block length encryption.

Functional optimization problems can be solved analytically only if special assumptions are verified. The approximation method that we propose for the general case is based on the following steps: 1) the decision law is constrained to assume a fixed structure, in which a certain number of free parameters must be optimized, and this enables the functional optimization problem to be reduced to a nonlinear programming one; 2) as a fixed structure, we choose, among various nonlinear approximators, the input/output mapping of multilayer feedforward neural networks; and 3) the resulting nonlinear programming problem is characterized by a highly complex cost function. We propose to minimize it by stochastic programming algorithms. As test-beds for the solving technique, we address a stochastic optimal control problem and an estimation problem, whose solutions are traditionally regarded as difficult tasks.

A feedback control law is proposed that drives the controlled vector v/sub t/ of a dynamic system (in general, nonlinear) to track a reference v/sub t/* over an infinite time horizon, while minimizing a given cost function (in general, nonquadratic). The behaviour of v/sub t/* over time is completely unpredictable. Random noises (in general, non-Gaussian) act on both the dynamic system and the state observation channel, which may also be nonlinear. The proposed solution is based on three main approximating assumptions: 1) the optimal control problem is stated in a receding-horizon framework where v/sub t//sup 0/ is assumed to remain constant within a shifting-time window; 2) the control law is assigned a given structure (the one of a multilayer feedforward neural network) in which a finite number of parameters have to be determined in order to minimize the cost function; and 3) the control law is given a "limited memory", which prevents the amount of data to be stored from increasing over time. The errors resulting from the second and third assumptions are discussed.

In an access node to a hybrid-switching network (e.g. a base station handling the downlink in a cellular wireless network), the output link bandwidth is dynamically shared between isochronous (guaranteed bandwidth) and asynchronous traffic types. The bandwidth allocation is effected by an admission controller, whose goal is to minimize the refusal rate of connection requests as well as the loss probability of packets queued in a finite buffer. Optimal admission control strategies are approximated by means of backpropagation feedforward neural networks, acting on the embedded Markov chain of the connection dynamics. The case of unknown, slowly varying, input rates is explicitly considered. Numerical results are presented, comparing the approximation with the optimal solution obtained by dynamic programming, showing the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Hybrid systems made up of a continuous plant supervised by a discrete-event controller are considered in this paper. A set of optimal feedback control functions is defined at the continuous level. The aim of the discrete-event controller, modelled by means of a finite-state automaton, is that of choosing, in the above mentioned set, the best control action to be applied to the plant in dependence of the current plant conditions and of possibly occurred external events. The overall control scheme is, thus, a two-level hybrid control scheme. A preliminary analytical study of the stability properties of the hybrid control scheme is presented.
