PDG Pressure Estimation in Offshore Oil Well: Extended Kalman Filter vs. Artificial Neural Networks

The Permanent Downhole Gauge (PDG) pressure measurement is of great importance for offshore oil well modeling and control since it is measured close to the bottom hole. The PDG is installed in a remote undersea environment, which makes expensive the maintenance in case of fault. For this reason, PDG measurements are frequently unavailable. To overcome this limitation, the PDG pressure can be estimated using other available measurements. The estimation is not a simple task since, depending on process operational conditions, the multiphase flow might present limit cycles. In this work, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) are proposed as potential techniques for the PDG pressure estimation. The comparison of the results shows that ANN returns precise estimation for a short-time window after the failure, but fails when a different process operating condition is applied, while EKF returns good estimation in all the cases.

Resource allocation for device-to-device communications in multi-cell multi-band heterogeneous cellular networks

Heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) with millimeter wave (mm-wave) communications are considered as a promising technology for the fifth generation mobile networks. Mm-wave has the potential to provide multiple gigabit data rate due to the broad spectrum. Unfortunately, additional free space path loss is also caused by the high carrier frequency. On the other hand, mm-wave signals are sensitive to obstacles and more vulnerable to blocking effects. To address this issue, highly directional narrow beams are utilized in mm-wave networks. Additionally, device-to-device (D2D) users make full use of their proximity and share uplink spectrum resources in HCNs to increase the spectrum efficiency and network capacity. Towards the caused complex interferences, the combination of D2Denabled HCNs with small cells densely deployed and mm-wave communications poses a big challenge to the resource allocation problems. In this paper, we formulate the optimization problem of D2D communication spectrum resource allocation among multiple micro-wave bands and multiple mm-wave bands in HCNs. Then, considering the totally different propagation conditions on the two bands, a heuristic algorithm is proposed to maximize the system transmission rate and approximate the solutions with sufficient accuracies. Compared with other practical schemes, we carry out extensive simulations with different system parameters, and demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme. A New Anti-Spam Model Based on E-mail Address Concealment Technique

To deal with the junk e-mail problem caused by the e-mail address leakage for a majority of Internet users, this paper presents a new privacy protection model in which the e-mail address of the user is treated as a piece of privacy information concealed. Through an interaction pattern that involves three parties and uses an e-mail address code in the place of an e-mail address, the proposed model can prevent the e-mail address from being leaked, thus effectively resolving the junk e-mail problem. We compare the proposed anti-spam method with the filtering technology based on machine learning. The result shows that 100% spams can be filtered out in our scheme, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed anti-spam method.

PID output-feedback control under event-triggered protocol

This paper is concerned with the [Formula omitted.] proportional-integral-derivative (PID) output-feedback control problem for a class of linear discrete-time systems under event-triggered protocols. The controller and the actuators are connected through a communication network of limited bandwidth, and an event-triggered communication mechanism is adopted to decide when a certain control signal should be transmitted to the respective actuator. Furthermore, a novel PID output-feedback controller is designed where the accumulative sum-loop (the counterpart to the integral-loop in the continues-time setting) operates on a limited time-window with hope to mitigate the effect from the past measurement data. The main objective of the problem under consideration is to design a desired PID controller such that the closed-loop system is exponentially stable and the prescribed [Formula omitted.] disturbance rejection attenuation level is guaranteed under event-triggered protocols. By means of the Lyapunov stability theory combined with the orthogonal decomposition, sufficient conditions are established under which the addressed PID controller design problem is recast into a linear convex optimization one that can be easily solved via available software packages. Finally, a simulation example is exploited to illustrate the usefulness and effectiveness of the established control scheme.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). In this paper an output-based model predictive controller for linear time-invariant discrete-time networked control systems subject to constraints is studied. In the networked control system the control loop is closed over a communication network between sensor and controller as well as controller and actuator. An output-based controller using a Luenberger observer for reconstruction of the system state is designed. For both communication networks event-triggers are utilized to reduce the communicational burden. Recursive feasibility of the control law is provided by robust control methods. Moreover, asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed. A simulation example illustrates that the proposed method can reduce the network utilization significantly. © 2017

The Italian anti-corruption Act (law n. 190/2012) requires all public administrations to spread procurement information as open data. Each body is obliged to yearly release standardized XML files, on its public website, containing data that describes all issued public contracts. Though this information is currently available on a machine-readable format, the data is fragmented and published in different files on different websites, without a unified and human-readable view of the information. The *** project aims at developing a semantic knowledge graph based on linked data principles in order to overcome the fragmentation of existent datasets, to allow easy analysis, and to enable the reuse of information. The objectives are to increase public awareness about public spending, to improve transparency on the public procurement chain, and to help companies to retrieve useful knowledge for their business activities. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Two main problems are addressed in this paper. The first one is the model identification for a commercial unmanned aircraft system (UAS): the Parrot Mambo multicopter. The second one aims at synthesizing a robust controller for guaranteeing the stability of the X and Y translational dynamics of this UAS. To accomplish these goals, we first collect input-output data from a set of real-time flight experiments. Next, by applying an extended least square (ELS) algorithm to the data, a group of dynamic models are identified. Due to uncertainties, the obtained models are similar in nature but exhibit parametrical variations. For this reason, from the set of identified models, a unique nominal (i.e., average) parameter-dependent linear model is built, which also takes into account the minimum and maximum values defining the model parametrical variations. Finally, a static linear controller is synthesized for the dynamics of interest, guaranteeing global stability for every model. The identification results and the performance of the closed- loop controller are validated in a set of numerical simulations, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed modeling and control approaches.

To systematically shift existing distribution outage management paradigms to smart and more efficient schemes, we need to have an architectural overview of Smart Grids to reuse the assets as much as possible. Smart Grid Architecture Model offers a support to design such emerging use cases by representing interoperability aspects among component, function, communication, information, and business layers. To allow this kind of interoperability analysis for design and implementation of Fault Detection, Isolation and Restoration function in outage management systems, we develop an Internet-of-Things-based platform to perform real time co-simulations. Physical components of the grid are modeled in Opal-RT real time simulator, an automated Fault Detection, Isolation and Restoration algorithm is developed in MATLAB and an MQTT communication has been adopted. A 2-feeder MV network with a normally open switch for reconfiguration is modeled to realize the performance of the developed co-simulation platform.

In order to solve the problem of personal data privacy protection, a hierarchical data tracing technology (Hierarchical Data Trackback Technique, HDTT) is proposed in this paper. This technology uses IP data message header free part to record the AS domain and IP address information of packet transmission with GBF data structure. Path reconstruction uses GBFAS data to determine the AS domain and then uses GBFIP data to determine the router within the domain to complete two levels of data traceability. Finally, through experimental verification, the HDTT technology can achieve 98% and 92% of the domain and inter-domain path overlap respectively, which can accurately reconstruct the data transmission path and realize the data traceability.
