NeuroProbe: A Performance Profiling Feed Forward Neural Network Simulator for Hardware Interaction Analysis

NeuroProbe is a simple neural network simulator designed by authors specifically for educational purposes focusing on simulating inference phase on a computationally capable embedded hardware, aiming to provide a deeper understanding of hardware interactions and performance improvement. This simulator incorporates performance profiling capabilities, allowing students and educators to analyze and optimize the performance of a simulated trained neural network. By simulating the intricate hardware interactions, NeuroProbe enables users to gain insights into how various components impact the overall performance of neural networks. Using this simulator, learners can experiment with different configurations and architectures, identify potential bottlenecks, and explore optimization strategies to enhance neural network performance before deploying the model on an Edge Computing environment. It also enriches computer science education by enabling learners to gain deeper insights into hardware interactions and performance improvement. By identifying performance bottlenecks, learners can refine their understanding of neural networks and develop skills in optimizing their models for enhanced performance. In conclusion, NeuroProbe empowers users to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation of neural network on an embedded device, fostering a more comprehensive understanding of neural networks and their hardware requirements. Currently, it is focused solely on single-threaded CPU-based computation enabling SSE, AVX. At present, NeuroProbe does not support SIMD extensions such as AVX-FMA, AVX-512, multi-threaded computation, and accelerators such as NPU, TPU, and GPU. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Breast cancer is a prevalent tumor across women and is associated with a high mortality rate. Prompt diagnosis is one of the biggest challenges that needs to be addressed globally, as it can considerably improve survival rates. An automatic diagnosis system based on deep learning models is critical for improving detection, prediction accuracy, and survivability. This study used various DenseNet-based architectures for multi-class classification using the BUSI dataset. The experiments indicate that the fine-tuned DenseNet201 model outperforms with an accuracy of 98.28%. The results demonstrate the promising capability of the fine-tuned DenseNet201 model to have a high potential for further implementation in practice for achieving early diagnosis and highly individualized approaches for better treatment. The further development of extensive and diverse data sets will be essential for developing new diagnostic methods and improving the existing ones. © 2025 IEEE.

DRL-Enabled Computation Offloading for AIGC Services in IIoT-Assisted Edge Computing Networks

The widespread application of AI-generated content (AIGC) services has driven demand for efficient computational resources, making effective task scheduling and computation offloading in edge computing (EC) environments a critical research topic. However, the high computational requirements and low latency demands of AIGC services, combined with the limitations of EC, present challenges for existing offloading methods, such as unstable decision making in dynamic task environments and resource overloading. Here, we propose a decentralized AIGC task offloading architecture within an IoT-assisted EC network to optimize the quality of AIGC services. In this architecture, we define a multiobjective joint optimization problem for AIGC task offloading, aiming to simultaneously optimize key performance metrics, such as task latency, energy efficiency, and load balancing. To address this problem, we introduce an improved proximal policy optimization (PPO)-based deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm, named TOPPO. By incorporating a policy update step size constraint and a clipping mechanism, TOPPO significantly enhances the stability of the training process and reduces fluctuations during policy updates. Additionally, the algorithm integrates an LSTM model to improve its ability to handle temporal dependencies. Through continuous interaction between the model and the environment, the offloading strategy is iteratively updated to ensure that diverse AIGC tasks are efficiently executed on IoT devices or edge servers. Extensive simulations and performance evaluations demonstrate that the proposed method achieves significant improvements in task latency, energy consumption, and load management during AIGC task processing. © 2014 IEEE.

Analysis and reaction to natural disasters have made extensive use of deep learning methods using semantic segmentation networks. These implementations’ foundation is based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which are capable of precisely identifying and locating the relevant areas of interest within satellite imagery or other types of remote sensing data. This helps with rescue planning, restoration efforts, and disaster evaluation. Difficulties in the provision of healthcare services, due to natural disasters, are made worse by the existing problems prevalent in most healthcare systems. The aim of this research is to propose a novel technique in climate change–based disaster management with their public healthcare analysis using cloud computing with deep learning techniques. In this research, the cloud network has been used in LiDAR image collection for climate change–based disaster-struck regions and their public healthcare analysis. This collected image has been classified and optimized using a deep Markov Q-transfer adversarial neural network with binary grey whale swarm optimization. Experimental analysis has been carried out for various disaster management–based public healthcare datasets in terms of classification accuracy, specificity, NSE, sensitivity, and F-1 score. The proposed technique attained a classification accuracy of 97%, F-1 score of 94%, specificity of 96%, sensitivity of 95%, and NSE of 57%. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The digitization of healthcare data coupled with advances in computational capabilities has propelled the adoption of machine learning (ML) in healthcare. However, these methods can perpetuate or even exacerbate existing disparities, leading to fairness concerns such as the unequal distribution of resources and diagnostic inaccuracies among different demographic groups. Addressing these fairness problems is paramount to prevent further entrenchment of social injustices. In this survey, we analyze the intersection of fairness in ML and healthcare disparities. We adopt a framework based on the principles of distributive justice to categorize fairness concerns into two distinct classes: equal allocation and equal performance. We provide a critical review of the associated fairness metrics from a ML standpoint and examine biases and mitigation strategies across the stages of the ML lifecycle, discussing the relationship between biases and their countermeasures. The article concludes with a discussion on the pressing challenges that remain unaddressed in ensuring fairness in healthcare ML and proposes several new research directions that hold promise for developing ethical and equitable ML applications in healthcare. © 2024 IEEE.

Skin cancer is the most commonly reported type of cancer globally and one of the few cancers that can be effectively treated if detected in its early stages. Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have significantly improved skin cancer diagnosis through Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) models. This review explores ML and DL methodologies, including Random Forest, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Inception Networks, ResNets, and Support Vector Machines (SVMs), which have been widely used for automated diagnosis. However, existing AI-based systems face several challenges, including the need for balanced datasets, model interpretability issues, computational complexity, and difficulties in generalizing across diverse populations. Moreover, multimodal detection systems and Explainable AI (XAI) present additional challenges in making AI-driven diagnoses more reliable and transparent. This article discusses these challenges while also highlighting emerging techniques that integrate multiple data sources and individualized diagnostic tools to enhance precision. By addressing these challenges, this review aims to provide insights into the practical advancements and future directions of AI in skin cancer detection and treatment. © 2025 IEEE.

Tuberculosis (TB) has been a great challenge in the health world, and proper treatment requires proper diagnosis at the right time. This paper has classified the bacilli in sputum samples into single/simple and clump formations using deep-learning transformer techniques. The method starts with semantic segmentation, where TransUNet model has been used on sputum images to detect regions containing the bacilli. The superior visual task performer, the Swin Transformer, further classifies the regions identified. Accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC-ROC are the metrics used to evaluate the model's performance. This classification contributes to TB diagnosis by quantifying bacterial load and categorizing infection severity. This type of differentiation may guide clinicians in developing more precise treatment strategies as the variability of infection severity may be observed in patients suffering from TB. Integrating the recent transformer models, such as Swin Transformer and TransUNet, into the microbiological diagnosis process will improve the speed of TB diagnosis, and automated bacterial classification will occur through an organized process. This study will help diagnose TB by improving the capacity of diagnosis, which subsequently helps in better decision-making regarding treatment and management, independent of human interpretation. The successful classification of TB bacilli resulted in an average accuracy of 93%, average precision of 93%, average recall of 92.5%, and average F1-score of 92.5%. © 2025 IEEE.

Ecology, Spatial Structure, and Selection Pressure Induce Strong Signatures in Phylogenetic Structure

Evolutionary dynamics are shaped by a variety of fundamental, generic drivers, including spatial structure, ecology, and selection pressure. These drivers impact the trajectory of evolution and have been hypothesized to influence phylogenetic structure. For instance, they can help explain natural history, steer behavior of contemporary evolving populations, and influence the efficacy of application-oriented evolutionary optimization. Likewise, in inquiry-oriented Artificial Life systems, these drivers constitute key building blocks for open-ended evolution. Here we set out to assess (a) if spatial structure, ecology, and selection pressure leave detectable signatures in phylogenetic structure;(b) the extent, in particular, to which ecology can be detected and discerned in the presence of spatial structure;and (c) the extent to which these phylogenetic signatures generalize across evolutionary systems. To this end, we analyze phylogenies generated by manipulating spatial structure, ecology, and selection pressure within three computational models of varied scope and sophistication. We find that selection pressure, spatial structure, and ecology have characteristic effects on phylogenetic metrics, although these effects are complex and not always intuitive. Signatures have some consistency across systems when using equivalent taxonomic unit definitions (e.g., individual, genotype, species). Furthermore, we find that sufficiently strong ecology can be detected in the presence of spatial structure. We also find that, while low-resolution phylogenetic reconstructions can bias some phylogenetic metrics, high-resolution reconstructions recapitulate them faithfully. Although our results suggest a potential for evolutionary inference of spatial structure, ecology, and selection pressure through phylogenetic analysis, further methods development is needed to distinguish these drivers' phylometric signatures from each other and to appropriately normalize phylogenetic metrics.

Modern image recognition has experienced dramatic improvements because of Machine Learning and Deep Learning algorithms together. This study investigates CNNs and SVMs for recognition enhancement while reviewing image recognition technologies extensively through literature. This paper demonstrates how the applications of healthcare and security systems and social media analysis influence society. New developments in technology have not resolved multiple unresolved obstacles such as data bias as well as computational complexity and privacy concerns together with real-time processing restrictions. The latest image processing techniques include ViTs alongside GANs and Few-Shot Learning but developers need to achieve better results in future improvements. The main goal of this research examines present-day advancements in ML and DL with a review of their capabilities as well as constraints before recommending future study paths to overcome problems encountered today. This paper evaluates both the future potential and benefits alongside drawbacks of ML and DL models applied to image recognition. © 2025 IEEE.

Background: The automated classification of videos through artificial neural networks is addressed in this work. To explore the concepts and measure the results, the data set UCF101 is used, consisting of video clips taken from YouTube to recognize actions. The study is carried out with the authors' resources to determine the feasibility of independent research in the area. Methods: This work was developed in the Python programming language using the Keras library with Tensorflow as the back-end. The objective is to develop a network that presents performance compatible with the state of the art in terms of classifying videos according to the actions taken. Results: Given the hardware limitations, there is considerable distance between the implementation possibilities in this work and what is known as the state-of-the-art. Conclusion: Throughout the work, some aspects in which this limitation influenced the development are presented, but it is shown that this realization is feasible and that obtaining expressive results is possible 98.6% accuracy is obtained in the UCF101 data set, compared to the 98 percentage points of the best result ever reported, using, however, considerably fewer resources. In addition, the importance of transfer learning in achieving expressive results as well as the different performances of each architecture are reviewed. Thus, this work may open doors to carry patent-based outcomes. © 2025 Bentham Science Publishers.
