Optimizing task scheduling in cloud environments: a hybrid golden search whale optimization algorithm approach

Managing fluctuating workloads and optimizing resource utilization in cloud environments pose significant challenges, particularly in fields requiring real-time data processing, such as healthcare. This paper introduces a novel hybrid metaheuristic technique, the Golden Search Whale Optimization Algorithm (GSWOA), specifically designed for scheduling independent dynamic biomedical data. GSWOA merges the strengths of Golden Search Optimization (GSO) and Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), optimizing numerical function optimization and achieving a balance between exploration and exploitation. The algorithm’s effectiveness was assessed using MATLAB by applying standard benchmark functions and further evaluated on a real-world biomedical dataset within the CloudSim environment. The performance evaluations demonstrate that GSWOA significantly outperforms existing metaheuristic and traditional scheduling techniques, achieving a 42.71% increase in resource utilization and a 14.17% reduction in makespan compared to conventional methods. These results highlight GSWOA’s potential to enhance scheduling efficiency substantially in cloud computing infrastructures, suggesting it is a powerful tool for complex task allocations. The ability to handle threats, such as disinformation, manipulation of public opinion, and disruption of critical supplies, is becoming increasingly important, thus, necessitating, among other strategies, efforts to establish a proper risk communication to the public. This paper addresses the need for more empirical research in this area to contribute to the development of an in-depth understanding of public risk communication that includes information-related threats and cyber issues. The study involves officials of three public organizations entrusted with safety and security in society: the police, the rescue service, and the county administrative board of a county in the middle of Sweden. The results detail the recognition of risks to be communicated, the organization of the communication process, the messages that these actors seek to bring forth, and to whom as well as challenges of public risk communication in the digital era. The findings indicate that information-related and cyber risks are increasingly essential to consider as an additional layer of public communication. Two implications emerged as particularly important: (1) all communication about risks and crises must consider the systemic risk of mis- and disinformation, and (2) tailored communication about the risks interrelated with disinformation should use human-centered, dialogue-based, and moderated approaches. Further research can focus on associated challenges, considering the distribution of responsibilities, inter-organizational information sharing and cooperation, and the possibly stochastic effects on critical (information) infrastructures and, ultimately, societal values. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2025.

Mixed RF/FSO Communication systems with Rate Splitting

In this paper, rate splitting (RS) has been applied in a mixed dual-hop radio frequency/free space optical (RF/FSO) relay system. In particular, assuming fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) and decode-and-forward (DF) relay protocols, the performance of both heterodyne detection and intensity-modulated direct detection (IM-DD) has been analytically evaluated. In this framework, it is assumed that the RF channel suffers from Rayleigh fading, while the FSO channel is affected by the atmospheric turbulence-induced fading with Malaga (M) distribution and pointing errors. For the considered system, we derive expressions for the outage probability, the average bit error rate (BER), and the average channel capacity. In addition, the asymptotic performance of the system at high signal-to-noise ratios regime is analyzed, special cases are discussed, and useful insights have been extracted. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the accuracy of the analytical and asymptotic expressions. © 1983-2012 IEEE.

In this work, we proposed an automated deep learning and saliency map architecture for the segmentation of crops, leaf disease segmentation, and land cover classification. The proposed framework is based on two embedded steps. In the first step, crop leaf disease segmentation was performed using superpixel clustering-based saliency maps and Bayesian optimization. The contrast enhancement technique is designed in the first segmentation phase and is passed to the saliency technique for the disease segmentation. In the second phase, EfficientNet-b0 architecture is fine-tuned with hyperparameters optimized via Bayesian Optimization. Also, the fine-tuned model is embedded with a single self-attention residual block fused with an efficient average pool layer. Training has been performed on segmented and contrast-enhanced images that were later fused using a serial-embedded approach. The extracted features in the testing phase are further optimized using the modified moth flame-controlled bisection (MFcB) technique. Finally, the extracted features are classified using machine learning classifiers for the final classification. Experiments are performed on the publically available cucumber leaf dataset and Remote sensing dataset with an improved accuracy of 97.6% and 92.90%, respectively. A comparison with state-of-the-art techniques shows that the proposed architecture has improved performance. © 2013 IEEE.

The advent of high-throughput transcriptomic technologies has generated vast transcriptomic datasets, challenging current analytical methodologies with their sheer volume and complexity. The Grouping-Scoring Modeling (G-S-M) approach is one of the recent approaches that treat groups of genes (or clusters of genes) by embedding prior biological knowledge with machine learning in order to detect the most significant groups for classification tasks. The G-S-M might need to treat thousand ten thousand of groups (scoring those groups) which might affect the speed and performance of the algorithm. In response, this study introduces the Pre Scoring G-S-M model, an enhancement of the established Grouping-Scoring-Modeling (G-S-M) framework. This approach incorporates a Pre-Scoring component that leverages the Limma package for its empirical Bayes methods to optimize initial transcriptomic data evaluation through a percentage-based selection of statistically significant gene groups. Aimed at reducing computational demand and streamlining feature selection, the model also addresses data redundancy by eliminating duplicate gene-disease associations. Application to nine human gene expression datasets from the GEO database showed promising results. It demonstrated improvements in computational efficiency and analytical precision while reducing the number of features selected per dataset compared to the traditional G-S-M approach, without compromising accuracy. These initial findings highlight the Pre-Scoring G-S-M model's potential to enhance transcriptomic data analysis, indicating a promising direction for future bioinformatics research. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

The increasing need to process large, high-dimensional datasets and the substantial computational power required have made the use of distributed cloud servers essential. These servers provide cost-effective solutions that make storage and computing accessible to ordinary users. However, they might face significant vulnerabilities, including data leakage, metadata spoofing, insecure programming interfaces, malicious insiders, and denial of service. To gain public trust in distributed computing, addressing concerns related to privacy and security while ensuring high performance and efficiency is crucial. Multiparty computation, differential privacy, trusted execution environments, and federated learning are the four major approaches developed to address these issues. This survey paper reviews and compares these four approaches based on a structured framework, by highlighting recent top-tier research papers published in prestigious journals and conferences. Particular attention is given to progress in federated learning, which trains a model across multiple devices without sharing the actual data, keeping data private and secure. The survey also highlights federated learning techniques, including secure federated learning, by detecting malicious updates and privacy-preserving federated learning via data encryption, data perturbation, and anonymization, as new paradigms for building responsible computing systems. Finally, the survey discusses future research directions for connecting academic innovations with real-world industrial applications. © 2020 IEEE.

The primary objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the binary information on the presence or absence of gene expression can sufficiently capture the inherent heterogeneity within single-cell RNA se quencing (scRNA-seq) data. This hypothesis posits that even without detailed expression levels, valuable insights about cellular diversity can be obtained. Utilizing this method can be particularly advantageous when analyzing large datasets, a common scenario in the field of scRNA-seq. In this paper, we evaluate clustering performance and cluster separability of a variety of model-based algorithms and distance-based methods to an alyze both expression level data and threshold-encoded binarized data. We examined the performance of the Bernoulli-mixture model and Gaussian-mixture model. These were compared against traditional clustering techniques such as hierarchical clustering, K-means, and the Louvain algorithm on a range of scRNA-seq datasets. Our findings reveal that mixture models exhibit a lower dependence on the specific dataset compared to distance-based methods. Mixture models, particularly, demonstrate greater efficacy in accurately estimat ing the number of clusters present within the data. Among analyzed algorithms, the Bernoulli-mixture model stands out, outperforming distance-based approaches in several key aspects. Binary data, presence/absence of gene expression, seem to be indeed adequate to capture the heterogeneity of scRNA-seq data when clus tering with methods specifically designed for binary datasets. The implications of this finding are significant, as it opens up new possibilities for simplifying data analysis in scRNA-seq studies without compromising the accuracy of the results. © 2025 by SCITEPRESS– Science and Technology Publications, Lda.

Modern design of nuclear facilities represents unique challenges: enabling the design of complex advanced concepts, supporting geographically dispersed teams, and supporting first-of-a-kind system development. Errors made early in design can introduce silent errors. These errors can cascade causing unknown risk of complex engineering programs. The Versatile Test Reactor (VTR) Program uses digital-engineering principles for design, procurement, construction, and operation to reduce risk and improve efficiencies. digital engineering is an integrated, model-based approach which connects proven digital tools such as building information management (BIM), project controls, and systems-engineering software tools into a cohesive environment. The VTR team hypothesizes using these principals can lead to similar risk and cost reductions and schedule efficiencies observed in other engineering industries. This research investigates the use of a digital engineering ecosystem in the design of a 300-MWt sodium-cooled fast reactor. This ecosystem was deployed to over 200 engineers and used to deliver the conceptual design of the VTR. We conclude that initial results show significant reductions in user latency (1000x at peak use), the possibility of direct finite-element-analysis (FEA) integrations to computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and nuclear reactor system design descriptions (SDDs) that we can fully link throughout design in data-driven requirements-management software. Road traffic accidents are a significant global issue, resulting in considerable fatalities and injuries each year. The United Nations aims to decrease such incidences by 50% by 2030. Advanced Driver Assistance systems (ADAS) provide a revolutionary solution; yet, their implementation is predominantly restricted to high-priced electric vehicles, limiting their influence to affluent markets. This study advocates for a paradigm shift by showcasing the viability of an economical autonomous vehicle prototype integrated with ADAS capabilities, created using cost-efficient and readily available technology. The prototype used a Raspberry Pi as the core computing unit, incorporating ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection, a GPS module for navigation, and a camera for traffic signal recognition. These components, while more basic and far less costly than those in premium automobiles, effectively provide essential functions such as automated braking, GPS navigation, and adherence to traffic signals. The project employs an Agile approach, enabling iterative development and swift responsiveness to input. This research demonstrates the potential of democratising ADAS technology to provide safer, smarter automobiles to under-represented socioeconomic groups. Future developments could enhance the system’s precision by integrating advanced sensors, such as LiDAR and radar, while maintaining cost-effectiveness, fostering inclusive innovation in vehicle safety.
