Estimating the State of Charge (SoC) is a crucial part of a battery management system (BMS) for the electric ship. An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to predict the SoC using the ANFIS under different ambient temperature variations is proposed. A five-layer Artificial Neural Network for SoC estimation is used. The ANFIS achieves the lowest prediction error compared to the Neural Network, electrical circuit model, coulomb counting, Kalman Filter, Fuzzy Neural Network, and Support Vector Machine method.

We present a data structure to randomly sample rows from the Khatri-Rao product of several matrices according to the exact distribution of its leverage scores. Our proposed sampler draws each row in time logarithmic in the height of the Khatri-Rao product and quadratic in its column count, with persistent space overhead at most the size of the input matrices. As a result, it tractably draws samples even when the matrices forming the Khatri-Rao product have tens of millions of rows each. When used to sketch the linear least squares problems arising in CANDECOMP / PARAFAC tensor decomposition, our method achieves lower asymptotic complexity per solve than recent state-of-the-art methods. Experiments on billion-scale sparse tensors validate our claims, with our algorithm achieving higher accuracy than competing methods as the decomposition rank grows.

Performance-Aware Data Management for Remote Sensing Big Data

(Image Present) Remote sensor data, whose dimensions increase exponentially and turn into big data with the new technologies, cause great difficulties in transferring, storing, and processing. This article describes a novel two- phase big data management system on the geo-distributed cloud that takes advantage of network topology and resource utilization in a distributed manner and optimizes resource allocation to promote efficient big data analysis for remote sensing applications. In order to simulate the proposed system, we created a network with some of the virtual machines. Moreover, we developed well known Random Assignment and Hungarian Algorithm methods for comparing with our proposed method what we called Performance Aware Assignment. Experimental results have shown that Performance Aware Assignment has 36% and 26% faster storage throughput speed than Random Assignment and Hungarian Algorithm respectively. In addition, it also optimizes resource usages at data centers without resource exhaustion. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A primary constraint in the major photonic integration platform of Silica-on-Silicon, especially when combined with fabrication approaches like Direct Laser Writing is the optical waveguides' low refractive index contrast, leading thus to limitations for efficient coupling with currently available state-of-the-art single photon emitters such as semiconductor nanowires with quantum dots (NWQD). We propose and demonstrate a novel approach to drastically enhance the light coupling between silica based Laser-written channel waveguides and NWQDs, by incorporating an optical microsphere in their intermediate space. It is demonstrated that the induced photonic nanojet action of a suitably designed microsphere illuminated by the NWQD, excites efficiently the channel waveguide's modes and can enable light coupling to a degree even above 50%. The proposed method is reasonably robust to imperfections and misalignments and could be implemented by current state-of-the-art micro/nano patterning techniques. It is anticipated that the practical implementation of the method will allow the integration of multiple quantum emitters in silica based hybrid integrated circuits thus enabling their scalability towards for quantum computing and sensing applications. © 2024 SPIE.

Analyzing the microscopic dynamics of pushing behavior within crowds can offer valuable insights into crowd patterns and interactions. By identifying instances of pushing in crowd videos, a deeper understanding of when, where, and why such behavior occurs can be achieved. This knowledge is crucial to creating more effective crowd management strategies, optimizing crowd flow, and enhancing overall crowd experiences. However, manually identifying pushing behavior at the microscopic level is challenging, and the existing automatic approaches cannot detect such microscopic behavior. Thus, this article introduces a novel automatic framework for identifying pushing in videos of crowds on a microscopic level. The framework comprises two main components: i) Feature extraction and ii) Video labeling. In the feature extraction component, a new Voronoi-based method is developed for determining the local regions associated with each person in the input video. Subsequently, these regions are fed into EfficientNetV1B0 Convolutional Neural Network to extract the deep features of each person over time. In the second component, a combination of a fully connected layer with a Sigmoid activation function is employed to analyze these deep features and annotate the individuals involved in pushing within the video. The framework is trained and evaluated on a new dataset created using six real-world experiments, including their corresponding ground truths. The experimental findings indicate that the suggested framework outperforms seven baseline methods that are employed for comparative analysis purposes. © 2023, CC BY.

Coherent and incoherent laser pump on a five-level atom in a strongly coupled cavity-QED system

We propose a cavity quantum electrodynamic system consisting of a five-level atom coupled to a single mode of the cavity electromagnetic field. The study is focused on the regime of strong coupling between the cavity and atom. Pump laser fields and cavity fields connect the split energy levels of the atom. Instead of the well-known two-level Dicke model obtained by adiabatic elimination of the high-energy levels, we consider the pump lasers' detunings to the atomic transitions to be very small such that we can examine the influence of the higher-energy states. We have studied the effect of an external coherent drive and incoherent pumping on these higher-energy levels and observed the enhancement of intracavity photon numbers due to quantum coherence effects. The amplification of intracavity photons is achieved even without a population inversion. However, the effect of the coherent and incoherent drive is negligible for very large detunings when the higher-energy states are adiabatically eliminated. At zero and small detunings, the system reaches the steady state at an earlier instant of time for higher incoherent pumping. We find an almost agreeable steady-state behavior of the system's exact full quantum dynamics model and its semiclassical approximation. Our model tries to accurately simulate the open system by considering the cavity decay, spontaneous decay, and dephasing of the system.

The Circular Economy Action Plan is the main building block of the European Green Deal, Europe's new agenda for sustainable growth. Businesses need new technologies, new methods and new industrial organization either to create new businesses or to transform their products, processes and business models. They also need new talents to innovate, create businesses and new jobs, and transform society into a more sustainable one. Circular economy has grown significantly in recent years as a topic taught in engineering curricula. The purpose of this paper is to present the design, implementation and evaluation of a summer school program dedicated to the development, transformation and implementation of circular economy systems and new business models in manufacturing. The program was designed in collaboration with three university partners during a European project and relied on contributions from industrial companies, including start-ups and innovative companies. At the end, some lessons are drawn in order to show the main added value based on the evaluation of this summer school and to identify recommendations for the design and implementation of similar summer schools.

The paper presents current design issues, limitations, and fabrication challenges towards the development of hybrid integrated optical circuits with embedded single photon sources, which are critical components for future quantum computing, sensing, and communication systems. Optical nanowires with embedded quantum dots (NWQD) are very promising single photon sources, with several reported results of integration in high index platforms like silicon or silicon nitride. Silica on silicon is a favorable platform for optical computing, providing the high degree of customization when combined with direct laser writing techniques for definition of optical structures with refractive index modification. However, the low ~10-3 achievable refractive index contrast imposes strict limitations on the compatibility with NWQD resulting in general in low coupling efficiency as shown in this work. Consideration of several design and fabrication issues demonstrates the potential for NQWD integration in laser written silica based optical circuits with adequate efficiency for practical applications. © 2023 IEEE.

Ductility mechanisms in complex concentrated refractory alloys from atomistic fracture simulations

The striking variation in damage tolerance among refractory complex concentrated alloys is examined through the analysis of atomistic fracture simulations, contrasting behavior in elemental Nb with that in brittle NbMoTaW and ductile Nb45Ta25Ti15Hf15. We employ machine-learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs), including a new MLIP developed for NbTaTiHf, in atomistic simulations of crack tip extension mechanisms based on analyses of atomistic fracture resistance curves. While the initial behavior of sharp cracks shows good correspondence with the Rice theory, fracture resistance curves reveal marked changes in fracture modes for the complex alloys as crack extension proceeds. In NbMoTaW, compositional complexity appears to promote dislocation nucleation relative to pure Nb, despite theoretical predictions that the alloy should be relatively more brittle. In Nb45Ta25Ti15Hf15, alloying not only changes the fracture mode relative to elemental Nb, but promotes dislocation accumulation at the crack tip, leading to higher resistance to crack propagation.
