PERFORMANCE OF A PRIORITIZED ON-BOARD BASEBAND SWITCH FOR A MULTISERVICE MULTIBEAM SATELLITE

He received the B. Eng. degree in electrical engineering from Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1989. He is at present completing the M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering at Concordia University. (S'75–S'79–M'79–SM'86) received the Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University Dallas TX in 1979. He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. Dr. Elhakeem is a Senior Member of the Canadian Electrical Engineering Society and Armed Forces Association. He has chaired numerous technical sessions in IEEE Conferences was the Technical Program Chairman for IEEE Montech 1986 Montreal Canada. Dr. Elhakeem is the key guest editor of theIEEE Journal of Selected Areas in Communicationsfor the May June issues 1993 covering CDMA networks. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

In this paper, the performance of a new movable boundary accessing (MBA) technique for future integrated services multibeam satellite systems is studied. The multiservice environment considered includes both asynchronous and isochronous traffic consisting of video, voice, file transfer and interactive data. The movable boundary access technique proposed here will maximize the utilization of the up-link frame capacity. It is shown that the potential user population is substantially increased with the use of a moving boundary policy with minimal overhead.

A distributed simulation algorithm for managing a set of processors executing a single-level network of sparse output discrete event system specification (DEVS) models is introduced. A sparse output DEVS is a DEVS in which the number of states that generate non-null outputs is much less than the total number of states. The new algorithm can be characterized by the following: It extends the basic abstract simulator for DEVS models;it reduces the time to determine the next activated processor, thus getting better performance;and it provides a well-defined object-oriented design for distributed simulation. Networks of continuous models that interact discretely are used for experiments. Verification and performance evaluation of the simulator algorithm are demonstrated using the DEVS-scheme simulation environment. © 1993 IEEE.

MPI is the new de facto standard for multicomputer and cluster message passing. This short paper describes the issues underlying the development of parallel libraries with MPI. We motivate the need for parallel libraries, and explain why common message-passing systems do not support them. We describe added features needed to support libraries, and what these features are called in MPI. We mention additional features of MPI that support libraries, but which are beyond the scope of this initial paper on this topic. We provide guidelines in terms of "do's" and "don'ts" for would-be MPI library writers. We present a linear algebra library in skeletal form on a two-dimensional virtual topology, including code fragments. We summarize by mentioning related work, and comment on future code development of parallel libraries under MPI as well as porting efforts of existing codes to the system. © 1994 IEEE.

DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) is a general modelling formalism with sound semantics founded on a system theoretic basis. This gives it a claim to be universal for formalisms describing Discrete Event Dynamic Systems (DEDS). This gives that any other formalism such as Petri nets, which have become very popular for DEDS control can be embedded in it. Moreover, DEVS extends to the continuous case thus facilitating combined discrete/continuous modelling. The universality of DEVS is significant because it has been implemented in a variety of simulation environments, as extensions of diverse underlying Object-Oriented languages such as CLOS and C++. This gives it not only the power of formal rigor but also the practical capability of application to real world complex systems. The DEVS formalism has associated with it a characteristic abstract simulation engine architecture that can be realized in diverse sequential and parallel/distributed platforms. It is especially suitable for the simulation study of complex technical and natural systems with intelligent components and for long term model development capability acquired through systematic reusability. This tutorial will present the basic concepts of the DEVS formalism and its associated simulation methodology. These concepts will be illustrated in the context of large scale ecosystems modelling.

The design and implementation of various integer arithmetic algorithms are presented. The design process and the various criteria involved in the building of an efficient O(N) 32-bit bit stream-systolic multiplier chip from the algorithmic level to the final implementation stage are described. An entirely different approach is used to implement integer division using the Chinese remaindering theorem. This algorithm generates the first N significant bits of the reciprocal of a number in O(log N) bit steps. This algorithm is asymptotically faster than the implementations currently available for integer division. The scheme is attractive as it forms a basis for the implementation of some more arithmetic functions, like the generation of a power series and multiplication of N N-bit operands in O(log N) time steps. The evaluation and implementation of the modulus function are considered.< >

In this paper we report the first successful combination of a frequency domain CAD program, namely OSA90/hopeTM, with a time domain TLM electromagnetic field simulator running on various hardware platforms. The technique allows optimization of microwave structures using time domain field analysis without the need for equivalent circuits or lookup tables. A comparison of the execution speed of the TLM field simulator on a number of computers, from IBM PCs to workstations to massively parallel computers have been made. This provides a clear picture of the required CPU time for performing such simulations on various hardware platforms. A detailed account of the hybrid frequency/time domain procedures, advantages and disadvantages of combining the frequency and time domain methods as well as parallel programming techniques on the DECmpp 12000 with a view towards future hybrid domain CAD/CAM systems are given. The principal application is field-based hybrid domain modeling of complex microwave and millimeter wave structures.
