Combined models with discrete event and continuous components can represent a wide variety of complex systems that must be defined using many different models. In artificial intelligence, similar efforts are underway in the study of qualitative models for physics and reasoning about systems. Consequently, there is a need to bridge theory and technology in order to have a uniform language when either analyzing or reasoning about physical systems. The authors present how combined modeling and discrete event modeling within the simulation literature can be used to help formulate such a bridge. They present formalisms from systems theory as well as the DEVS formalism to demonstrate the underlying mathematical foundation for talking about complex systems. They also present a precise methodology for partitioning continuous systems into discrete event systems for the purpose of defining qualitative models from quantitative models.< >

Deals with further efforts to develop abstraction mechanisms for systematic derivation of related models through the use of system morphisms. The authors describe an abstraction mechanism for mapping a task plan hierarchy into an isomorphic tree of model abstractions that supports hierarchical task execution. The task plan hierarchy is formulated in a model-based planning approach. They also show how the hierarchical execution structure can be constructed. Then the endomorphism concept employed in the modelling of autonomous systems is illustrated. The DEVS-Scheme knowledge-based, discrete event simulation environment is used to test the models and tools in an autonomous laboratory application.< >

A novel approach to the modeling of circuit response and gradients is proposed. The multidimensional quadratic approximation is exploited, and full advantage is taken of available gradient information. Efficiency and accuracy are demonstrated by gradient-based yield optimization of a filter and an MMIC (monolithic microwave integrate circuit) amplifier.< >

This paper addresses physics-based design and yield optimization of MMICs. Multidimensional statistical models are considered for the physical, geometrical and process-related parameters of active and passive devices. An efficient gradient-based yield optimization technique is employed. The yield of an X-band amplifier is improved from 47.5% to 78.5%.

The authors contrast the statistical extraction of GaAs MESFET equivalent circuit model parameters and physical model parameters from wafer measurements. It is observed that the equivalent-circuit model of A. Materka and T. Kacprzak (1985) provides a better match for individual devices but the model based on physical parameters of P.H. Ladbrooke (1989) provides a better estimate of device statistics. It is also shown that the Materka and Kacprzak equivalent-circuit model can accurately fit the data from which the model parameters are extracted, because it has fewer constraints than the physical model.< >

Data filtering is an important mechanism that can be used to achieve the real-time linkage among geographically distant local area network (LAN) sites. Two approaches for implementing data filtering within simulation networks, namely, filtering at reception and filtering at transmission, are described. Filtering at reception requires all frames to be transmitted onto the network backbone and later filtered by each receiving gateway to select those frames that are pertinent to the nodes served by this gateway. Filtering at transmission requires that frames originated by a node at a local network are filtered at the local gateway and are sent to other gateways only if they carry information relevant to other external nodes.< >

Extending discrete event modelling formalisms to facilitate greater symbol manipulation capabilities is important to further their use in intelligent control and design of high autonomy systems. This paper defines an extension to the discrete event system specification (DEVS) formalism that facilitates symbolic expression of event times by extending the time base from the real numbers to the field of linear polynomials over the reals. A simulation algorithm is developed to generate the branching trajectories resulting from the underlying nondeterminism. The extended formalism offers a convenient means to conduct multiple, simultaneous explorations of model behaviors. Examples of application are given with concentration on fault model analysis.< >

Universitat de Valéncia Spain. He is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Physics. His rescarch interests are in the area of microwave engineering and numerical method for solving electromagnetic wave propagation problems. Jose M. Femenia was born in Segorbe (Castellón) Spain in 1962. He obtained in Physics from the the Licenciado degree in Physics from the Universitat de Valéncia Spain in 1987 Universitat. After working in Laser and Optical Technology in the Department d'Optica di la Universitat de Valéncia he received a grant to work in numerical techniques for electromagnetics in the Departnment de Fisica Aplicada. He currently works in Computer Science and Communications in the Servei d'lnformàtica de la Universitat de Valéncia. Vicente Such was born in Valéncia Spain on August 10 1943. He received the Licenciado degree in Physics in 1967 and the PhD degree in 1971 both from the Universitat de Valéncia Spain. From 1967 to 1974 he was Assistant Professor with the Department of Electricity and Magnetism Universitat de Valéncia and with the Universitat Politécnica de Valkncia. From1974 to 1981 he was Professor of Electricity and Magnetism at the Universitat de Extremadura Universitat de Valéncia and Universidad de Palma de Mallorca Spain. He is now a Professor in the Department of Applied Physics at Universitat de Valéncia. His current research interests deal with microstrip antennas arrays Microwave passsive circuits and computer methods in electromagnetics.

The adaptation of available structural mechanics software to solve microwave problems is possible by the analogy between the differential equations. A brief review of the analogy between transverse or shear waves in elasticity and electromagnetic waves is presented, followed by a more detailed discussion of the adaptation of a program to obtain the resonant frequencies of a rectangular resonant cavity, doing a three-dimensional analysis. The geometry of the electric field is also obtained for the resonant modes.

A review is presented of recent developments of concepts related to high autonomy systems and the roles played by conventional control theory and artificial intelligence. Autonomy is shown to be an extended paradigm that subsumes both control and AI paradigms, each of which is limited by its own abstractions. Autonomy, as a design goal, offers an arena where both control and AI paradigms must be applied as well as and a challenge to the viability of both as independent entities. Architectures in which such paradigms can be integrated are discussed, with some focus on a model-based approach. Benchmarks for levels of autonomy that arise out of the model-based architecture are given.< >

It is argued that autonomy, as a design goal, offer an arena in which both control and artificial intelligence (AI) paradigms must be applied. Architectures in which AI and control paradigms can be integrated within a model-based approach are discussed. The ability of knowledge-model-based tools (SES/MB framework and DEVS scheme) to support the model-based design of high-autonomy systems is extended through the ability to generate families of planning alternatives and build a hierarchical event-based control structure. Concepts are illustrated by a robot-managed spaceborne laboratory environment.< >
