The discovery of magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials has flourished a new endeavor of fundamental problems in magnetism. In this talk, we will discuss the magnetization and spin dynamics in two types of 2D magnets: a room-temperature vdW magnetic crystal Fe5GeTe2 with a Curie temperature Tc = 332 K and Cu(1,3-bdc), a quasi-2D magnet with a Kagome lattice. Ferromagnetic resonance was performed with external magnetic fields applied along the c-axis (H||c) and the ab-plane (H||ab). We have found a sizable Landé g-factor difference between the H||c and H||ab cases for both Fe5GeTe2 and Cu(1,3-bdc). The FMR measurements have also revealed that Fe5GeTe2 has a damping constant comparable to Permalloy. Our experiments highlight key information regarding the magnetic state and spin scattering processes in 2D magnets, which can lead to implementations of 2D magnets based spintronic devices. © 2023 IEEE.

Automated manual transmissions,which usually adopt synchronizers to complete the gear shift process,have many advantageous ***,the torque interruption and the challenging control objectives during the gear shift process limit its industrial application,especially for the power-on gear *** paper proposes a model predic-tive control(MPC)method to control the clutch engagement process and effectively shorten the torque interruption,consequently enhancing the gear downshift *** the control law deduction,the proposed MPC also accounts for time-domain constraints *** the control law was deduced,it was validated through simulations under two typical power-on gear downshift working *** of the simulation results demonstrate that the controller proposed in this paper can shorten the torque interruption time during power-on gear downshifts while minimizing vehicle jerk for overall satisfactory drivability.

The asymmetric distribution of chiral objects with opposite chirality is of great fundamental interest ranging from molecular biology to particle physics. In quantum materials, chiral states can build on inversion-symmetry-breaking lattice structures or emerge from spontaneous magnetic ordering induced by competing interactions. Although the handedness of a chiral state can be changed through external fields, a spontaneous chirality flipping has yet to be discovered. We present experimental evidence of chirality flipping via changing temperature in a topological magnet EuAl4, which features orthogonal spin density waves (SDW) and charge density waves (CDW). Using circular dichroism of Bragg peaks in the resonant magnetic x-ray scattering, we find that the chirality of the helical SDW flips through a first-order phase transition with modified SDW wavelength. Intriguingly, we observe that the CDW couples strongly with the SDW and displays a rare commensurate-to-incommensurate transition at the chirality flipping temperature. Combining with first-principles calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, our results support a Fermi surface origin of the helical SDW with intertwined spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom in EuAl4. Our results reveal an unprecedented spontaneous chirality flipping and lay the groundwork for a new functional manipulation of chirality through momentum-dependent spin-charge-lattice interactions.

α-MgAgSb based thermoelectric(TE)device attracts much attention for its commercial application because it shows an extremely high conversion efficiency of ~8.5% under a temperature difference of 225 ***,the mechanical behavior of α-MgAgSb is another serious consideration for its engineering ***,we apply density functional theory(DFT)simulations to examine the intrinsic mechanical properties of all three MgAgSb phases,including elastic properties,shear-stress-shear-strain relationships,deformation and failure mechanism under ideal shear and biaxial shear *** find that the ideal shear strength of α-MgAgSb is 3.25 GPa along the most plausible(100)<010>slip *** strength is higher than that of β-MgAgSb(0.80 GPa)and lower than that of γ-MgAgSb(3.43 GPa).The failure of α-MgAgSb arises from the stretching and breakage of MgeSb bond α-MgAgSb under pure shear load,while it arises from the softening of MgeAg bond and the breakage of AgeSb bond under biaxial shear *** suggests that the deformation mechanism changes significantly under different loading conditions.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) plays a pivotal role in normal functioning of Brain. Intracranial compartments such as blood, brain and CSF are incompressible in nature. Therefore, if a volume imbalance in one of the aforenoted compartments is observed, the other reaches out to maintain net change to zero. Whereas, CSF has higher compliance over long term. However, if the CSF flow is obstructed in the ventricles, this compliance may get exhausted early. Brain tumor on the other hand poses a similar challenge towards destabilization of CSF flow by compressing any section of ventricles thereby ensuing obstruction. To avoid invasive procedures to study effects of tumor on CSF flow, numerical-based methods such as Finite element modeling (FEM) are used which provide excellent description of underlying pathological interaction. A 3D fluid-structure interaction (FSI) model is developed to study the effect of tumor growth on the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in ventricle system. The FSI model encapsulates all the physiological parameters which may be necessary in analyzing intraventricular CSF flow behavior. Findings of the model show that brain tumor affects CSF flow parameters by deforming the walls of ventricles in this case accompanied by a mean rise of 74.23% in CSF flow velocity and considerable deformation on the walls of ventricles. © 2021, CC BY-SA.

The nanofluid, composed of kerosene and tantalum and nickel nanoparticles, is propagating through a porous, elastic surface. The kerosene base fluid is incompressible and electrically conducting. The energy equation for this nanofluid is formulated taking into account the viscous dissipation. The mathematical modeling is performed with the help of a similarity transformation. The developed governing equations are numerically solved using the shooting technique and the Matlab software. The physical behavior of different parameters in the model is discussed through tabular and graphical forms. The present results are also compared to past results. The results indicate that the flow propagates faster for higher values of Darcy number and Tantalum nanoparticles and that the magnetic field opposes the fluid motion. Also that the thermal boundary layer decreases in the presence of Tantalum and Nickel nanoparticles.

We have gathered a group of expert modelers from around the world who have worked on healthcare simulation projects associated with the pandemic and the paper provides their answers to an initial set of questions. These serve to provide a description of the modeling work that has taken place already and to make suggestions for future directions both in modeling Covid-19 and preparing the world for future healthcare emergencies. © 2021 IEEE.

Computationally efficient sandbox algorithm for multifractal analysis of large-scale complex networks with tens of millions of nodes

Among various algorithms of multifractal analysis (MFA) for complex networks, the sandbox MFA algorithm behaves with the best computational efficiency. However, the existing sandbox algorithm is still computationally expensive for MFA of large-scale networks with tens of millions of nodes. It is also not clear whether MFA results can be improved by a largely increased size of a theoretical network. To tackle these challenges, a computationally efficient sandbox algorithm (CESA) is presented in this paper for MFA of large-scale networks. Distinct from the existing sandbox algorithm that uses the shortest-path distance matrix to obtain the required information for MFA of networks, our CESA employs the compressed sparse row format of the adjacency matrix and the breadth-first search technique to directly search the neighbor nodes of each layer of center nodes, and then to retrieve the required information. A theoretical analysis reveals that the CESA reduces the time complexity of the existing sandbox algorithm from cubic to quadratic, and also improves the space complexity from quadratic to linear. Then the CESA is demonstrated to be effective, efficient, and feasible through the MFA results of (u,v)-flower model networks from the fifth to the 12th generations. It enables us to study the multifractality of networks of the size of about 11 million nodes with a normal desktop computer. Furthermore, we have also found that increasing the size of (u,v)-flower model network does improve the accuracy of MFA results. Finally, our CESA is applied to a few typical real-world networks of large scale.
